The underworld was a peaceful place, free of all desires. The reason behind this is because every soul was only a husk of who they used to be, in perfect condition to reincarnate. No lingering feelings whatsoever that would affect their reincarnated self.
But there are always exceptions.
My name is August, and I have made a grave mistake, but I believe that it was worth it. On most days anyways.
I was a werewolf and I loved a human. This goes against our rules and the only way for the rules to not affect you was to become an alpha. When you're an alpha, you can weave the rules however you would like.
I was afraid of the other wolves killing her so I challenged the alpha too soon. If only I waited a few more years, but humans don't live long and their lives are fragile.
It wasn't a surprise that I died.
"What do you want?" she sat on a throne, surrounded by skulls. I wondered how lonely she felt.
"I would like a wish," I told her, a sad smile dancing on my lips.
"I see. You would like to see her again, wouldn't you?" her smile was sweet, softening her fearsome appearance. I didn't know it then and I never knew it later, but the Queen of the underworld was a real sucker for romance. An element missing in this dreary world.
"Yes," I paused for a bit, "if it's possible."
"Of course it's possible, but a minute here is a decade in the living world."
"If I wait, will I see her?" I asked, hope tinging my dead eyes.
"No, she would be like the other souls you saw outside," she shrugged carelessly like this had nothing to do with her, though it really didn't.
"There's always the Entwined Souls," a male voice was heard. He received a killing glare from the Queen that said, 'that's my line!'
"Then stop playing with him, I need your help with something," he looked sorrowful, like he lost something.
"Is it something to do with your sudden change of gender?" she asked him.
"He said that he always wished I was a guy, so that we would remain friends forever. The emotion 'love' never slashing through our bonds. I thought that I wouldn't fall in love with him, I was right. He didn't fall in love either, and all was fine. But everyone kept mistaking us as a couple, we felt forced. It became awkward and now he's dead."
"The same thing would've happened whether or not you were a guy or a girl," the Queen said.
"But it was his first wish, and he was a very emotional person. Always caring about what other people said, there were other factors but I'm sure that I was the straw that broke the camel's back."
"Whatever you say. Now August, you could in fact become entwined souls with your loved one. However the price is to live with her forever, in every lifetime. Even if you get tired of her or her of you, your fate will always be entwined. Are you fine with that?"
"Of course I am," I waited patiently for something to happen, but nothing did.
"Now what was the problem you faced? Death?" the Queen asked.
"I cried a lake of tears, now a new species has arisen." Death said it without regret, like it wouldn't affect the very food chain itself.
"That's it? Well I guess the world as you knew it is ending then. But...what was the name of your lover?"
"Why?"
"Because she'll be alive to meet you after all."
