A loud knocking sounded from the door, "Bai Hao you rascal, don't tell me you are lazing around at home" someone shouted from outside. Opening the door, he saw middle-aged man waiting outside, the man looked to be somewhere between 40 and 50 years old judging by the hair that had started graying slightly. "Hello, Can I help you with something" Bai Hao asked? "Don't act as if you have forgotten, this time you won't be able to weasel out of paying rent" the middle-aged man responded. "You still owe me rent for last month, and you haven't paid for this month either. I want to see the 70 copper coins you still owe me or I'll have no choice to throw you out on the street."
A memory drifted up from the jumbled mess that was still present in his mind, Old man Xu, that was what everyone called the middle-aged landlord, though he was arguable not old enough to be called old man. A grumpy man that owned the building on half the street in this part of the slum, he was not someone you would call a friend, but he treated people fairly. The memory seemed foreign, like a swan in a flock of ducks it obviously didn't belong there. How do I know his name if I have never met him, he wondered.
"Stop staring at me you Rascal, I'm already doing you a favor by still letting you stay here and I have my own problems to deal with as well" old man Xu responded, if it was anyone else I would have thrown them out. Bai Hao considered that for a second and realized it was the truth, Old man Xu was usually grumpy and complained about everything, but he also had a family to take care of, children to feed and clothe and a wife to keep happy. "Sorry, please give me a few more days, by the end of the month I will pay you." Old man Xu grumbled and turned around, "One last chance then" he said while walking away.
Bai Hao sat down on his bed deep in thought. He never knew old man Xu, but somehow in his mind existed memories on how he came to rent a room from him. Slowly he came to the realization that not only did he have his own memories, in the back of his mind existed a set of other memories. A set of memories about another person that was coincidentally also called Bai Hao, a teenager whose parents had died 2 years ago in a house fire and who now had to make a living on his own. A teenager who was used to a comfortable life and after losing his parents slowly spiraled in depression. A teen who stayed in his room sulking, living off the inheritance his parents left behind until he was broke, and then got himself stabbed when he tried to steal money from the wrong person.
He was Bai Hao from Earth, a down-to-earth guy that was hoping to live a better life, but his body was that of Bai Hao, the poor teen living in a different world ruled by the strong. Where cultivation was possible, and people could become immortal. A teen living in a world full of martial arts and limitless opportunities to prove themselves, if only they can survive the dangers that come with such a world. Bai Hao from this mystical world died, but somehow the green flash, the last thing he could remember helped him move over to a new world where he came to occupy the body of the young depressed teen that was at deaths door. He, Bai Hao from Earth now had a chance at living a life that was extraordinary, with women throwing themselves at his feet, mountains of gold and stories of his quest for immortality.
He gasped from this revelation, his mind shaking as he was fantasizing of his future, not realizing the hardships that would have to be overcome. My soul has moved over to a new world he gasped? He felt a little fear at living in this new world, but most of his mind was taken over by dreams of a bright future. After all, he wasn't particularly attached to his old life, sure he didn't really hate his life as a student back on earth, but he couldn't help but day-dream about a meaningful life, dream about how he would one day become a hero. He was never very close to his family back on earth, his father used to work from morning to night, and his mother preferred spending her time on gossiping instead of caring for her children. He would miss his friends, but this was an opportunity, an opportunity to make something of himself.
Bai Hao spend most of the night in excitement until he slowly drifted to sleep.
