Decision (4)

William and Mia bought cup noodles, instant coffee and a lot of candies and snacks.

"Let's go eat it on the hood of the car," William said while heading to the car.

"No, that's not necessary. Why don't we eat it somewhere else," Although Mia was not familiar with car models, she can definitely tell that the car William is driving an expensive car.

Mia looked around the place but there were no seats in the convenience store. Outside the gas station was the same scenario. It seems like people only drive right through here to fill up some gas and get some snacks. It was not a place that people tend to stay and relax.

William laughed and said, "There's no seat in this place. Come on, let's go. It's such a waste to eat it inside the car since the weather is nice."

Mia was out of options and copied William as he sat on the hood and placed all the things they bought there. She became less concerned when she placed the hot beverage and noodles on it.

William was still sporting his smile while watching Mia get on the hood of the car and find a comfortable spot. The hood was large enough to accommodate the two.

They finished the cup ramen and were now drinking the instant coffee.

"Shouldn't you call Aunty? She might be worried because the ride back will take some time." William said while looking at his watch.

Mia took out her phone but was hesitating to press call. She was looking at her screen for quite some time now. As William saw this, he grabbed Mia's phone and pressed the call button. Mia tried to get her phone back but she could not pry away the phone from Williams' hand.

William used one of his arms to use as a cover from Mia and rotated his body so Mia could not reach his right side where the phone was.

Sfx*ring ring ring*

"Hello, Mia?"

"Aunty this is William." William happily said.

"William, why are you using Mia's phone to call me?" she said in a happy tone too.

"I'm with Mia right now and we might come home a bit late. We decided to take a drive at the beach. Don't worry, I'll promise to get her back at home safe and sound."

The two were conversing on the phone like old buddies. Mia who was watching this wondered why she was even hesitating to call her mother. A slight curve formed on Mia's lips as she listened to their conversation.

After a couple of minutes on the phone, William gave back the phone to Mia and gave her a charming smile as if asking for a compliment for doing something good. Mia did not bother with William and continued drinking her coffee, though a hint of smile could be seen while she was drinking.

William fixed his posture, looking somewhat defeated for not getting his compliment.

A little while later, Mia started to talk, "So I heard rumors about Melissa." She was still looking at the disposable cup that she was holding.

"What exactly did you hear?" William asked with a questioning look.

"A lot of things." She said, not wanting to say what she heard from those people.

"Don't believe them. Melissa is just a friend, unfortunately me and her father had an argument with some business so it ended up like that." William said seriously still looking at Mia.

"I see," Mia said still looking down.

"Don't worry about the rumors in the office. I'll make sure that they stop." William said with determination.

He was clenching his fist as he said this. He still remembers those vicious words that they spoke even though he was there.

Mia bit her lip, she did not want to cry anymore.

Silence once again fell on the two.

"Thank you," Mia said softly.

If it wasn't a quiet night, William might not be able to hear Mia's words.

"What for?" William asked while looking at the stars.

"For everything," Mia said solemnly.

"Mia," William called her name softly.

"Hmm?" Mia looked at William this time.

"I'm sorry," William said as he was looking at Mia's eyes.

"It was not your fault that the rumors spread like that." Mia could not stare at Williams sincere eyes as she once again looked at her cup.

"It was partly my fault." He said dejectedly.

"What do you mean?" Mia was the one confused by his confession.

William sighed and said, "I knew from the start that you applied in the company. I was the one who accepted you and gave you the position to be Melissa's assistant."

"Why did you do that William?" Mia asked not knowing what to feel.

As if thinking of the next words he could say, William took a moment before continuing. "I wanted to be close to you." He said. His eyes full was full of warmth when he said this.

Mia could feel his gaze, she knew it was different. She had a hint that William treated her in a special way. But she did not want to put meaning behind his actions. She was afraid of misinterpreting his kindness into something else.

"I think I should just quit my job," Mia said.

William could not tell her expression as she was looking down but he felt that something was wrong.

"Why?" William wanted to know the reason for her decision. He was panicking inside and wanted Mia to stay but he could not stop her from leaving.

"It seems I'm not really qualified for the job William. It might be best to just move on and find a different job." Mia said in a monotonous tone.

"Is that really what you want?" William asked.

"Yes," Mia replied instantly.

"Will that make you happy?" William asked again trying to clarify her feelings.

Mia paused for a bit before answering. "Yes"

William could only keep quiet and dejected at Mia's reply.
