Xu Rouguang's eyes flickered upon hearing those words. Despite the fact that everyone else had deemed them immortal enemies—even their old selves did, Lai Mingjie finally admitted to recalling hints of memories between the two of them... that weren't filled with hatred and blood.
The warmth of his hands and the softness of his hands...
A rich blush painted Xu Rouguang's cheeks red as he lowered his gaze at their interlocked fingers. He wondered how much of this did his memories could show him; would it even remember this kind of situation?
Romance between a child of heaven and a demon king...
Xu Rouguang's mood gradually turned dark and bitter. His eyes narrowed at nothing in particular; even the hold he had on Lai Mingjie's hand tightened.
If his feelings were even close to what he had now, what could have happened that turned him into a killing machine that Emodao and the whole world knew him as? How difficult must it be for him to endure a life where his happiness was worlds apart from his fingertips? If Emodao shared this feeling, then how come did he forget? So much that he didn't even recognize the person he once adored...
"Rouguang?"
"Sorry, I was just thinking." Xu Rouguang shook his head and smiled weakly at Lai Mingjie. However, before he could read the look on Lai Mingjie's face, he noticed a presence next to them. Apparently, the servers had arrived and were waiting for them to take their hands off of the table.
Their breakfast went without much noise. The two were either complementing the food or studying it in case Xu Rouguang would like to replicate how it was done. Lai Mingjie was also filling his stomach with so many sweets so early in the morning that Xu Rouguang had to physically grab his wrist and almost broke it. He only felt free to do so because he could heal the poor wrist... again and again if needed.
Lai Mingjie was fiddling on his phone all the way until they got to the harbor. Since they were on a bus, Xu Rouguang was only watching the scenery go by. When he flew past all of this, he wasn't even doing it on the streets. Sight-seeing seemed to be a huge part of Xu Rouguang's normal easy day.
The demon king's arm suddenly moved to the general's knee, which Xu Rouguang caught and held. Like it wasn't there, Lai Mingjie continued to fiddle with his phone, his pointer tapping on Xu Rouguang's knee.
It was a Saturday, and so the bus didn't get as crowded as it usually was on a weekday. The commuters were almost all unwilling to be in their workplace, long faces everywhere. Xu Rouguang looked at the finger that kept on tapping as if Lai Mingjie was getting impatient. He then decided to show off and released dense heaven and earth essence to shroud the entire bus. All of a sudden, everyone felt like their spirits were being uplifted and that they were itching to share joy. Some of them took out their phones and set appointments to meet up with friends or even just visit them.
Even Lai Mingjie felt that his impatience dissolved in seconds. He turned to the immortal who was just looking out the window. He could tell that Xu Rouguang was being such a show-off or a wastrel for some reason. Immortals rarely shared their heaven and earth energies with anyone because they had to absorb it by meditation. If some immortal general learned that Xu Rouguang was using his energy like this, that person would go crazy.
In Xu Rouguang's defense, he had what one could call an unlimited supply of heaven and earth energy. He didn't need to be in deep meditation to absorb this essence from nature; he could absorb it even if he just stood still. Also, he could manipulate nature at will so he didn't have to manufacture those effects from his energy; he just needed to command them to come. Moreover, his body had an incredibly dense core of heaven and earth essence. He could easily survive fighting for a whole year without absorbing anything.
Ah, this was what it meant to be fully immersed in the power of the gods. Being their child was too much of an advantage, but Xu Rouguang could freely say it wasn't helping him that much in achieving his dreams. Did the past General Xu say the same?
The bus reached the final stop near the harbor, and the two had got off of the bus. Lai Mingjie had pocketed his phone and held onto Xu Rouguang's back as they proceeded. There was a special deck for sightseeing in the harbor, giving them a view of the ships and the water. What made it very magical was that the horizon was where the sky and the water met. No ominous shadows of the sights at the other side of the lake obstructed the picture. It was a perfect spot to dream.
However, Lai Mingjie didn't take Xu Rouguang to the sightseeing deck. They walked through the planks leading to the ships that were parked on the other side of the harbor. Soon enough, Xu Rouguang's eyes glistened as he saw a man waving at Lai Mingjie from a yacht.
"Boss Lai!" The man grinned from ear to ear. "Everything's good and restocked! Have a nice day out there!" He then twitched and started bowing apologetically. "The guards mentioned about the strange movements in the water during nighttime so they would only allow rides until five in the afternoon. Please head back before then."
"Strange movements?" Both of them twitched and exchanged looks. However, Lai Mingjie only promised to come back before they get hauled by the guards. Even if he wanted to stay past five, they had a surprise appointment with the coroner.
Without further ado, Lai Mingjie invited Xu Rouguang to his yacht—well, his mother's gift for his twenty-fifth birthday. It had been two years since it was bought and left to rot in the harbor. Now that Xu Rouguang wanted to see the lake, Lai Mingjie ended up rushing the caretaker in cleaning it. It wasn't like it wasn't being maintained for the past two years.
It was Xu Rouguang's first time to get on a yacht. It would be a lie if he said he wasn't excited. He then turned to Lai Mingjie with a smile before holding out his hand. The chains detached on their own, and the water waved to make the yacht drift to the lake, out of sight of the observation deck.
Lai Mingjie didn't know how to drive it anyway. He just laughed out before taking off his coat and setting a table on the deck. He also placed chilled heaven's wine on the table along with some other food. He was doing so while Xu Rouguang was 'steering' the yacht.
"Rouguang, how do you like this?" Lai Mingjie lied on the bench, lifting his legs on the space for them and then crossing them. He even had his arms behind his head.
"Jie, you're becoming romantic. Princess Xu is really happy." The general chuckled lightly before going to Lai Mingjie's feet and started taking off his shoes and socks. "Jie..." His expression became dim. "We should look into that strange event. Perhaps, we might learn of something."
"Yeah, but not right now." Lai Mingjie was obliging to Xu Rouguang's actions. He then closed his eyes. "Aren't we supposed to be on a date right now?"
"Yes." Xu Rouguang hadn't forgotten; he was just being anxious for some reason. Without the problem with the Abyss and Dunzhao not being solved, he couldn't rest truly.
He just waved his hand and covered the yacht with an illusion shield to keep anyone from seeing them. His coat, shoes, and socks were then left on the floor before he climbed on top of Lai Mingjie.
The demon king only watched him before holding onto half of the general's face. "Aren't you getting a little pushy?"
Xu Rouguang ignored him and laid his body down, making use of Lai Mingjie as his bed and pillow. "Not really. I just wanted to feel you." He heard his love sigh and let go of his face. Using his eyes in the wind, he saw Lai Mingjie take a bottle of wine and drank from it like it was normal to have someone on top of him.
He didn't want to admire the lake anymore. He just wanted to pass the time like this.
