I have these dreams from time to time of a forest. I wander through the forest, the sky is overcast and the trees are huge and long, touching the sky.
More I penetrate into the forest, more things begin to morph. Screeches of crows gets ever louder and louder. The grass gets smaller and smaller, until there are no more patches of grass., only a bare ground remains. The branches of the trees become intertwined and connected to each other.
The sky is cleared of the clouds, it looks like the night sky, but there's two moons in the sky. I keep on walking and walking further into the forest. I came upon a large tree in the middle, the whole tree was white in contrast to the other trees and it's roots were thicker than the trees around it, all the branches and roots conjoin with it. Looking up, this tree was the biggest of them all, dwarfing the other trees. But the big white's leafs were of a red colour. At the tree's feet, there stood a figure, as I walk further towards her. The screeching stops. An uneasy silence sets in. The figure's visage was of a girl dressed in a white gown and dark hair. She was focusing on something.
Making my approach traversing the uphill climb, a soaked red figure comes to sight. A corpse, a hole encompassed what I presumed was the stomach of the person or what was left of a person? It was a grotesque scene, first time I saw it, I panicked. In a ton of horror flicks. The killer always sticks around for a few minutes to enjoy their "art".
First time, that's when I woke up, I sullied my pants. But after a few times, I mustered up the courage, to say a simple "Hello" to her.
For the first few times, she wouldn't answer and I would just woke up.
It wasn't until, a few weeks past and I would stand their like an idiot, stared at her as she watched the dead body, this went on, until I approached her and this time, she stood in a empty snowy field which was on the other side of the big white tree, where a murder of crows and vultures were settling in. Crows and Vultures were reaping away pieces of flesh with their sharp beaks.
I first hesitated going there, cause of the logic that you go on to snow with your night suit on, you die of hypothermia. But I went on to that pasture of snow, nothing happened. It didn't feel cold nor hot. Just okay. But the snows was deep, and my feet felt wet. I trudged along the snowfield to where she stood, this time, she was in much more seasonal clothing and she wore something along the lines of a red wool coat on her. As I came closer to her, I finally saw her face. She was beautiful, her skin was as white as the snow around her. Her dark black hair glossed even in the gloom. But her expression was that of a statue, calm and unflinching.
I stood beside her and glanced in her direction, A man in a winter coat was being pecked away piece by piece. Just alittle further from him, those damn crows were munching on a big animal, the head was cleaned out and I could clearly see bits of noggins in it. "What hell was I seeing?" was most likely a joke to me at this point. I turned my eyes to her and her face was as stale as a bad piece of loaf. And suddenly, I heard, someone's voice and it was hers, she spoke! "There were more awhile ago…let me show you." Next thing, I know. I'm back yet again in reality. Though even after waking up, I couldn't forget her voice. I couldn't wait for the next time, I met her.
Well, it wouldn't be until a few days before I would see her again. Next time, I met her, I was behind her, and there was a haze surrounding us and she just waved her right hand and all of it cleared up, snow was falling all round the empty plain and the trees were protracting from each other opening up ways to get into the plains and the sky was different too this time, with the morning atmosphere. It was calm right about the time, the groaning sounds started groaning and people were coming out of the woods, one guy heading out was jumped on by a large ass wolf and it ripped off his head in a moments flash.
Another guy came out of the woods with a machine gun and started shooting it until he ran out. The wolf died and he ran into the empty plain, so did many others, but one by one, they were getting chased down by those large wolves, one guy fell and was almost munched on, but he somehow got out of the grasps and quickly marching towards us, panting and shouting while his comrades tried to fight off the large wolves with their guns, he came and he was attacked, two of those things pounced unto him. One grabbed hold of his left leg, the other went for his shoulder. He pulled out a pistol fired at them, he shot blankly into the skull of the one chewing on his shoulder, and shot the other one a couple time and it let go of his leg and ran away. All the wolves were retreating back into the jungle.
After that, the whole field was crawling with bodies, all scattered. Men walked a few steps and fell flat on their feet. The guy in front of me, got up, his left leg was shredded and his jacket was torn. He walked a few steps to us. And then he dropped, straight into the snow. Just a finger away from us. It was like a scene from Valentina Zokimosa novel. Dead bodies everywhere, blood glushing about the snow, and a ambient silence.
Again, she spoke, she asked me something this time, whether I believed in a just and fair death. I answered that I didn't know. And then, I woke up and after seeing all that, I didn't have the appetite to eat anything that day plus I threw out all the novels I had of Valentina Zokimosa. Just to be safe. Though, late that same time, another novella of hers came out but I kept away from buying it. It was a good choice, though I read it later and it was a shitty book, I liked her last book better.
But that one scene, it started recurring in my dream. I would always be behind her and the soldiers would battle it out with the wolves and in the end, all the humans would be slain in the battlefield. That same man would walk over to us and fall with his legs not supporting him, and die thereafter, I saw it four days in a row. It was the same over and over again.
They were just there and I was watching them die, not being able to help. I was starting to wake up crying, don't know whether I felt pity for them or guilt over watching them meet their ill-fate over and over again. But every time, the sequence played out and it reached it's finale, she would say some new words. Things like "The Wolves will die too, death begets death.", "Then they will go back to where they came, giving back to nature what they were given.", "Do they really not know of what they do?" and such.
But on the fifth time, she walked along the dead ridden field. I followed her. Bodies were lying about the snowy field. But they weren't entirely whole, some pieces were scattered about. I almost step on someone's eye.
She, let's call her princess, as she didn't give me a name. That was my go to, cause she looked like a princess from those fairytale stories. I thought of her as elegant and divine, well, everything looked like a work of miracle to me back then, I was a naive teenager.
Well, the end of her white dress, slid along the snowy surface without interference, not a single dropped blood tucked onto it. The soles of my feet were drenched
We reached the outskirts of the forested area. Then, a louder and louder noise started resonating. Then I saw them, a patch of the sky was almost darkened with a fleet of black crows. All flying together, and crowing. One after another, the hoards started landing on the field and feasting on the recently departed. By this point, I built up a tolerance to the whole "crows eating corpses" thing. So, I kept on following her, the princess kept on walking, leading me out another path, where the trees protracted their branches to give a opening.
She went out the opening, and I followed her like i had been doing already. And this time, on the other side, was where we met, the big white tree. She went on leading.
She was walking at such a fast pace, I was finding it hard to keep up. I was lagging behind and at one corner, she went around.
And I went after her, but looking around the corner, I saw no sign of her. I looked around the other side and poof, she went.
After that, well, I never saw her ever nor her kingdom, the forest frozen again.
I wonder, what was up with those dreams. Maybe I was just a horny teenager.
