Sighing in relief John was very happy. He finally reached the hole that was spawning his kind.
And the rest of his kind was still there lumbering around. Looking around he noticed one of his kind that stood out from the rest.
First and foremost, he was tall, really tall. This particular brother of his towered over the rest of them.
Thinking of an idea, he speculated that if he wanted to get any influence over the rest of his brother, he would have to this brother on his side.
Walking to his brother, who he convenient decided to name Goliath. He tried to draw his attention, but sadly Goliath only looked at him funny before continuing lumbering around with the rest of his brothers.
Grumbling in frustration, John was thinking about how he could possibly get the attention of Goliath. They were all basically blank slates, just walking around with a dazed look. Thinking about what he could use to draw their attention, his stomach finally rumbled.
Slapping his head in stupidity, he screamed "Of course."
"Food. If I can find food, I can lure out. That would temporarily give us a reason to unite and work together."
Thinking about this, John ran back into the forest trying to find a food source. It did not take long for him to find a bush with a bunch of tiny colored fruit covering it.
Immediately he grabbed a berry stuffing it into his mouth.
The moment he put the berry in his mouth, he spit it out.
"How can I be so stupid, I don't even know if the berries are safe and I am already eating them."
He remembered that back on earth, he had went camping once. And a particular stupid cousin of his stuffed a random berry in his mouth which caused him to sink into a near death state.
Looking around John noticed another lizard lazing around next to a tree. Thinking up an idea, he sneaked up the lizard. This time watching his step. The moment he was close enough he grabbed at the neck of the lizard.
He was able to successfully catch the lizard but underestimate his strength and with a crack, snapped the neck of the lizard.
John immediately felt the energy from the lizard go into his body again but this time it went straight into his abdomen.
This time the lizard's body did not turn into dust like last time. Gritting his teeth in frustration, he thought about where he would find another lizard.
Looking around he noticed a bunch of twigs that were scattered on the ground. Turning to look at the twigs then at the corpse of the lizard, he smiled.
"Looks like we're having grilled lizard today."
Putting the corpse on his shoulder. He started to gather a bunch of twigs from the ground. After he gathered about a stack, he picked up a bunch of dried leaves before heading back to the spawning hole.
As expected his brothers were still lumbering around. Looking around he noticed that there were no sisters around here.
Finding a spot on the ground, John poked a hole in the ground before putting the dried leaves inside.
He then grabbed a twig before sharpening it into a point against a giant jagged rock. Satisfied with the twig, he went back to the hole he dug before sticking the twig inside and rubbing it fiercely.
It took quite a long time but a spark was finally formed and without wasting time, he grabbed the rest of the twigs and putting them on the hole. And with a satisfied swoosh, the twigs burst into a roaring flame.
The moment the fire started all his brothers stopped walking around, drawn by the presence of flame. Not stopping to register his brother awe.
He grabbed an extra twig and sharpened it before stabbing it through the corpse of the lizard.
Going close to the fire, he sat down on the ground, sticking the corpse on top of the fire he waited as the lizard was roasted. It did not take long for the smell of roasted meat to spread to the area.
His brothers were already sitting like him around the fire.
Their attention focused on the roasted lizard on-a-stick. Thinking it had roasted for enough time, he pulled out the stick from the fire before standing up and facing his brothers.
John directed the lizard and put it into his mouth taking a bite and showing his brothers how to eat. Inside his mouth, the lizard tasted a little bit smokey and not too bad. The texture was smooth and John was already feeling like taking another bite.
But he resisted the temptation and passed it on to a brother beside him. This brother actually imitated what he did and also took a bite before passing it to the next brother.
"It looks like they are highly adaptable," he mused to himself.
Observing the group, he noticed there were about 16 of them. Looking back at the spawning hole, he noticed that it was no longer spitting out his brothers.
"I think for now we should form a shelter. And find a steady supply of lizard to roast," John thought to himself looking at the darkening sun. Turning to the forest, he headed for the forest hoping to catch more lizards.
As he headed to the forest, he heard footsteps following after him. Turning back he noticed that his brothers were all following him, Goliath taking the lead.
"Looks like I got the popular vote," he smiled.
John started to signal for them to stay. It did not take long for them to understand him, and then they went back to circling the still roaring fire.
Chuckling he headed back for the forest. This time as he headed into the forest, he went deeper than before determined to find another lizard. As he went deeper into the forest he found out that the forest descended into an unnatural silence.
The weird chirping noise had stopped and an unnatural breeze swept along the forest floor. As he went closer he noticed that if he stopped breathing he could hear breathing. Finally, he reached a clearing in the forest.
The moment he stepped into the place, his blood freeze. He felt that something inside this place could kill and would kill if he took another step inside.
Immediately turning around he ran back from where he came from. The only thought running through his mind, 'I was going to die.'
After who knows how long the feeling finally vanished and he was able to take a breather. Making sure to mark the place, he left still not forgetting to go and find more lizards.
