My Way

"So you just want to remain like this? With some good for nothing name sake job? Don't you have your own ambition? Why do you want to limit yourself like this?

Tell me, what's the problem? Who is stopping you?" He then paused a little. Seeing as I did not respond, he continued, "Look, just listen to me."

What was so wrong with him? That all he ever thinks of me is that I won't be able to do anything myself? Why did he think that I will be satisfied with his so-called imaginary 'name-sake' job? I did not look at him. I no longer even felt that I wanted to tell him about the job I got. I could not be assured that he would not think of the job as something lame.

Wasn't all this time away enough? I just could not endure being separated from him anymore.

"What? Say something."

I then looked at him. He seemed very angry, like it was taking his all to just sit here beside me calmly. I sensed a grave feeling slowly nestle in my heart. After this break, he would be gone for another two months. If he decides not to speak to me over this issue, I really wouldn't know how to hold up.

"Find me anything in this very city and I won't say a thing."

"What's there here? Just think, Jessy! With your grades you can make it into the top university in this state and it is in the capital. If you join somewhere around here it is as good as nothing!"

"Then, I won't go."

When he heard that he stood up and walked up the stairs. He went into his room and closed the door behind. I did not know just what could make him understand. In two months, he will be back for good. I decided then that I will not consider to compromise over this issue anymore.

Mom and dad would return in at least two more hours. I kept thinking what I should do. I had two options. One, go and speak with him now. Or, two, get mom to support me which means I had to wait till they return. The second option seemed to be the best choice. But if dad decides to involve himself, then it would be too strained; because, dad also wanted me to join that university. If that happens, there is more chance that I will have to agree with James.

After considering the same thing for some more time, I got up and went up to my room. I fetched Berryfield's offer letter and walked to his room. I knocked it twice. There was no response and I was not going to have it that way. This time I will have it my way. I banged on the door a good six times with my tight fists. My hand pained, but I did not care. I would tear that door apart if I had to.

I could hear him rush to open the door. This was the first time I did that. Usually, there were few times when he decided to go with no words with me. Then, I would not force him to talk to me. Instead, I always waited. Most of the time, I was the one to agree with him in the end.

But because this time, it was different, I had to force him out to speak with me. He unlocked the door and looked at me with a horrified expression.

"What happened?" He asked almost out of breath, taking a quick glance at my hands. But he did not say anything.

"You did not open the door when I knocked before." I answered his question. Hn, he spoke first without realizing after all.

"You really had to bang the poor door that hard? I thought something happened!" He slowly started raising his voice.

"Take a look at this," I told him as I handed him the letter in my hands.

"What is this?" he asked as he proceeded to pull out the contents from the white envelop.

"You applied for a job?" He asked with a sad face. I knew he would feel hurt a little. But it will pass. Everything has to pass. This man just had all things go his way up until now. So, this might actually affect him more than I had initially thought.

"Berryfield? The one just about the corner?" He asked with a lower voice.

"Yeah. The work place is there as well. Just a little walk."
