Modern day, China. The year 2019.

"There is no new release this month either. It sucks!" Yuan Lin lamented as he slumped his body onto the desk while holding the laptop. He is an avid reader of the eastern fantasy novel and hardly misses a new release but after finishing several books, he found a new series by his favorite author but there is no new release ever since four months ago. There hardly any news about the author too and he thought recently, perhaps the author is going to abandon the series which he wished won't happen as he predicted because the series is full of adventure inspiring him to make his own story.

He tapped on the button F5 on the keyboard multiple time until his laptop screen went white. Yuan Lin looked at the white screen one more time with teary eyes before he closed it and sighed a deep breath. "Haish..."

It is already late in the evening and his stomach grumbling for food. He took his house keys and went out to buy a bunch of ice creams at the convenience store near the apartment. The cashier noticed that he bought so much and knew those ice creams are only for one person to consume since the cashier once saw the man ate the ice creams in front of the store.

He is forty years old but at that age, he no longer has a parent. He is an old single bachelor without any relative. He is also not a rich person but his constant sweet craving due to his sweet tooth let him bought the ice creams once in a while in the whole bunch.

Just as he walked to the street to have a leisure walk in the pleasant evening, he heard a scream coming from the back and turned around.

In the direction of the gold shop, four men are holding guns and shot the building as a threat. Yuan Li saw one of the men holding a woman as the hostage, he immediately rush toward the people. He took the garbage can and the men noticed him running toward them. He throws the garbage can toward them and heard the sound of guns shot. He swiftly leaned backward and bent his knees as he saw the garbage can being thrown back by the bullet forces. With a calm mind and strong instinct, he rushed toward the men and kicked the guns they are holding with his strong leg.

"While I am here, don't even think about holding a gun." He said coolly as he borrowed the famous saying in the recent action movie.

"Son of a bitch!" One of the men cursed and took out a knife to attack Yuan Li.

He avoided it and knocked the people out by hitting the back of their head. Afterward, he faced the woman and helped her up. After confirming she is alright, he tied the men with ropes given by the cashier from the convenience store.

He also picked up the guns. Just as he lowered his body, he saw a flashing red light coming from a direction from the corner of his eye and realized that it was pointing toward the woman. His instinct is telling him the danger, he immediately took out the gun and pushed the woman away. As he shot the gun toward the red light, he felt a sharp pain stab directly into his heart without a sound.

Only then, he heard the police sirens but it was already too late. His eyes are closing so tightly and refuse to open once more time.

He used to work under dark organization as a hit man but after his parent's death of cancer, he realized that he spent too little with his family and it was too late when he realized it. He is constantly facing under the risk of death and exposed by the target. He thought he is already losing all emotion when killing his target but once, his target was a pregnant woman, he finds himself unsettling after killing her.

When he was twenty-seven years old, he decided to stop working under the organization and suffered a huge setback to quit the job. He was first sent to the prison to confess his crime but as the organization is also working under the government, his crime is pardoned because the death of the people he killed, benefit the country. He still has to stay in the prison for more than ten years. He was unable to attend to his sick parent and when he came out, he found out that his parent died from cancer. Both of them died in the same year.

Even then, he did not regret quitting as hitman because he heard that his parent died while smiling and read his parent diary, telling him that they loved him who is a hero in the dark.

He didn't become a hitman because he wanted to but he was recruited by the people when he was still a young adult. They threatened to find his parent. Although he was rebellious in nature and hardly spoke with his parent, they are still his only family thus, he agreed. For many years, he killed people to protect his family and in the end, he found out that he is regarded as a hero in their heart.

That made him feels touched. Ever since then, he lived a leisure life while saving people occasionally with his physical abilities to live on the title hero in the dark.

Thus, there is nothing about his life that he will say he ever regrets. If his parent found out that he had just become a hero in the daylight, what will they think?

But, if there is one thing he could say that he regrets...

He regretted not eating the ice creams he bought.
