Meanwhile Rebecca was sitting alone in front of the TV, watching a movie. She knew her parents would only return very late in order to give her and Jade some privacy.
But now the result was her spending the time before her birthday all alone. It was already ten minutes before midnight when her phone chimed with a new message.
At first she was excited when she saw Jade's contact photo with a new message. She thought that it was Jade telling her that she was going to be there soon.
But as she opened the message and started reading her face and mood fell. After reading the message through she stood up, switched off the TV and went up the stairs to her bedroom were she just listlessly sat down on her bed.
"She cancelled again... that's the fourth year in a row this time... Is it really a coincidence that she always has to vanish on my birthday celebrations? Is it me? Was it the chillie threat? Am I a bad friend? Does she not want to be my friend anymore?"
She laid down on her bed and hugged a pillow. Because of her parents Rebecca lived a very sheltered life. Jade was the only friend she had while growing up who didn't have an ulterior motive to befriend her.
Because of that Rebecca sometimes had doubts about herself. Was she not good enough? Did she do anything wrong? Every other kid she met would either be too afraid of her status to talk to her or just talk to her to use her status.
She didn't know since she didn't have any other friends to compare to, and so those kind of thoughts started plagueing her.
After she strangled her pillow for at least ten minutes she sighed and got up. She wanted to get ready for bed.
However, just as she stood up she suddenly got assaulted by a massive headache. Putting both of her hands against her temples she started groaning.
"Just what the f*** is going on? I've never had a migraine before! Where did this headache come from? Did I stand up too quickly?"
Suddenly the headache vanished as fast as it came, leaving a puzzled Rebecca standing in the room.
"What just happened? Did I ... imagine the pain? No way, right? I guess I will let mom check me through tomorrow."
While thinking such thoughts she continued on her way to the bath. Except she didn't go far. Before she could even make three more steps her body was wrecked with pain. Her legs buckled beneath her and she fell on the bedroom floor, twiching and groaning in pain. Luckily her bedroom had a super-fluffy carpet floor, so she didn't injure herself further.
She was barely able to grab her phone through the pain and dialed her mom's number on her speed-dial. Since her mom was a doctor it she picked up her phone immediately by reflex.
"Hello, Julia Simovitch speaking. Who's calling?"
"M-mom..."
"Oh sweety is that you? Why are you calling me? Did something happen to the kitchen again?"
"Mom ... it ... it hurts..."
Hearing her daughter's weak voice Julia immediately got into her serious doctor mode that overrode her panicky parent mode.
"Sweety, where are you? Tel what exactly is hurting. I'm going to come back instantly. Just hold out for a bit, allright? Sweety?"
She kept calling but Rebecca was unable to answer. Her head was already hazy from the pain she felt. It wouldn't be long before she fainted from it.
Seeing his wife's panicky expression Luka Simovitch's face became a cold mask. He was already in the car with a running engine, ready to drive the moment his wife got to the car.
With his suicidal and yet amazing driving skills they arrived at their house in no time. Julia didn't even wait for the car to fully stop before she burst out of the car and ran straight up to her daughter's room.
But before she could kneel down next to her daughter in order to examine her a shadow appeared in front of her. She had to make a full brake to barely avoid crashing into the figure in front of her.
After she scrutinized the figure for a few seconds she sighed with relief and her expression relaxed.
"Jesus, so it was only you. Please stop these jump-scares and get out of my way. I need to help my daughter. No wait, could you help me lift her up on the bed? I'm not as strong as you Silvy."
The silver haired woman in front of her was none other than Silvy, the fifth council seat that cleared out (harrased) all the hunters in the area just a short time earlier. However, Silvy didn't step aside or made any motion to help lift Rebecca.
Instead she shook her head with a serious expression.
"You can't touch her right now. She is going through the awakening. Any interference might impact her negatively, even just moving her the slightest bit."
Julia nodded in understanding and stopped trying to get past Silvy. But her face still clearly showed her concern for her daughter.
"I thought that it was only going to start in the late morning? How come it is already at this stage? It is just barely past midnight.", Julia asked with a doubtful expression laced with worry.
In contrast to her Silvy emitted an aura of calmness mixed with anticipation.
"Yes, it would normally start a bit later as the energy would need to build up in the body first. But in this case, since Rebecca's bloodline is so powerful it seems like there was already more energy that necessary, leading to this scenario in front of you.
The awakening isn't always this painful, but the general rule is that the more it hurts the better the results of the awakening will be.
Any kind of disruption or painkillers will diminish the effect of the awakening or even harm the body directly. With Rebecca it is even more important to leave her alone during the awakening since the high concentration of energy may greatly harm her body!"
"I see", Julia answered deep in thoughts.
"Oh, right.", Silvy remembered something. "Is she already prepared for the school? Did you tell her that she will change to a rather faraway school with dorms?
You didn't plan on telling her last minute right?"
Luka arrived in the room just in time to hear those words and roll his eyes.
"Of course we told her. What kind of irresponsible parents do you think we are? She is already fully packed and prepared for the trip."
Satisfied with the answer Silvy nodded. "That's fine then, I was just worried you might neglect it since you are usually very busy with your jobs. I can't wait to meet her at the academy.", she said and turned to the door.
"Now come on, the awakening will take quite some time, we shouldn't stay in this room in case we disturb her."
When Silvy saw the concerned look on their faces she sighed and added: "Don't worry, I will keep monitoring her energy until she is done."
Still a bit hesitant the pair looked at each other, nodded and followed Silvy down the stairs.
Only after arriving at the living room did Julia realize something amiss.
"Where is Jade? Didn't they plan on having a sleepover?"
"Oh, do you mean that other girl? I chased her away. I didn't like her vibe."
Hearing what Silvy said Julia could only sigh and pray for Jade. She hoped that she wouldn't get PTSD from whatever Silvy did to her in order to chase her away. She was aware that Silvy tended to easily go very, very overboard.
