I stepped out of the Port into the middle of the strangest fight, not that the fight was strange but this platform was on the floor of the Imperial Senate of the twelfth Galactic region.
A savage cry, reminiscent of the battle cry of a bull ape that I had once heard in an African preserve on Terra, lingered on the Emperor's lips, as he rushed to meet his attackers. Suddenly I recognized Serina, bathed in the glow of the studio lamps shining in on the platform, battling a Captain of the Imperial Guard, she was about to get what she deserved.
The Captain had Serina in such a position that she had no hope of surviving the next blow. No matter what she had done, I just couldn't allow her to be killed this way. I slipped in and blocked the strike at her head, not quickly enough to stop it but enough to deflect it from being a killing blow. My eyes locked with Serina's for an eternal instant.
The Captain turned on me. I was in no mood to mess around; I had just seen the Duke starting to bring a disrupter in line with the Emperor, who was in the midst of mopping the floor with several guards who must have been on the Duke's side. The only thing that I had time to do was throw the Captain at him, so I did, just as the Duke started firing.
