"Fear not when the world is plunged into great turmoil, for a hero shall arise."
"Though the hero of light struggles in the dark, in the land of light, hope shines."
"For the world shall tremble when this hero confronts the villain."
"And all shall know the name of the hero, when the land of light is ruled by Light's Protector."
-Prophecy of light, 3rd Age, unknown prophet
Chapter: 1
A young man in his mid 20's walked alone down a dirt path. Around 2 meters tall, strange red-hair, and a fairly muscular build from a life of labor-intensive work. He was dressed in dark-green leathers and a black water-proofed cloak with a blueish interior. A large travel sack on his back and a small, hooked sword at his waist.
Those who saw the man had seen many like him.
Young people from all over the world wanted to join the Academy of Magi, in the Nation of Ethos.
Most people were rejected outright however, if their intentions were not entirely based on the good aspects of life and general goodness.
Many of these rejects had created their own academy of sorts in the nation directly south of Ethos, the nation of Zeflen.
If Ethos could be called the nation of good magic, then, Zeflen was without a doubt the nation of evil magic.
The young man, Destin Yuudai, had been told by his father to head to the capital and join the Academy of Magi. He was unsure about why he had said this since he'd never performed magic before. His academic skills were quite high and so he thought this was the reason for it.
He had since disbanded those thoughts after being attacked by a magical beast a few nights before, nearly losing his life. That's why he was now wearing the finest clothes he had, now that his traveling clothes were shredded.
A few nights ago:
Destin was sitting around a campfire trying to read a book about magic he had picked up in the town he had recently passed through. In order to begin learning, in preparation of joining the academy of Magi, it all seemed rather strange to him;
Strange symbols and pictographs supposedly outlined how to perform a desired magic. He understood none of it. It was all non-sense to him.
He heard the snapping of twigs first, then a rustle in the bushes near him. That was all the warning he had before a Zhargot jumped him. A Zhargot is a magical animal with the appearance of a canine with a faint blueish glow to its eyes.
They are usually only found high up in the mountains though, so its sudden appearance and attack on him here was very surprising to say the least. The fact that it could use water and ice type magics was well known to those who hunted it for its mystical fur.
Destin dodged its initial lunge by diving to his right and rolling, drawing his dad's short-sword. His dad, having served in the nation's military for years, had taught him the basics before setting out on this journey. Destin was in a fast-lunge position, maximizing speed and keeping his center of balance low.
He was on one knee with both hands on the sword's handle, drawn back for maximum thrusting force.
A Zhargot's hide was deceptively tough.....
The Zhargot pounced and Destin lunged, though his aim seemed to have been somewhat off. Destin hit the Zhargot with a glancing blow, while its paws swiped at his chest and a snapping, sharp-tooth filled, jaws came inches from his head before continuing past him.
Destin was now bleeding from several cuts along his abdomen and right shoulder that got caught in the swipe. The cuts might leave scars but they, thankfully, didn't seem to be very deep. Probably due to his clothes interference....
Turning around with a growl, the Zhargot opened its maw to emit a blueish-white stream at Destin, freezing the air in its path to create a sudden snowfall.
Cursing, Destin once again rolled, though to his left this time to avoid rolling on the sword. Turning, the Zhargot howled and then materialized a spear made from ice that immediately sped through the air towards him, too fast to dodge.
Destin, though knowing it was rather pointless, tried to block with too slow hands. In the face of death his innate magical defenses activated, creating a barrier constructed entirely of magical energy. It was the same color as the Zhargot's eyes.
Then the circular barrier began spinning in the air making a 'hum' sound that made the Zhargot's hair stand up before a flash of blinding light briefly turned night into day.
Destin woke up the following morning with a dead Zhargot inside his camp, dispelling the thoughts of it having been a dream.
His scabs still stung though, at least when he moved about. Some of which re-opened when he first tried to get up.
He had heard the value of a magical beast such as this and had brought the corpse back into the town he had past the day before.
Making a deal with a tanner and a tailor for a robe to be made from the Zhargot's fur, he got his first, very own, magical robes.
Present day:
Destin thumbed his newly acquired robe again...soft but unyielding hair met his touch. Water-proof to rain and snow, it was at least as strong as leather, if not more so.
Smiling, he continued on towards the Academy once more from the town he was leaving for a second time now. He couldn't get the memory of the magic circle that had appeared before him that night.
"How did i do it?" Destin constantly wondered. The previous two nights had yielded no results, no matter what he tried.
He was, however, even more intent on joining the Academy of Magi now that he knew he could use magic. Now if only his burning, itching scabs would stop bothering him, he could enjoy the nice weather.
Fresh, crisp air; blue skies with few clouds visible; and a slight breeze promising a good spring, here in the mountainous country-side.
Alaric Zhivago, an elderly looking man, gazed down from Ashadeep tower.
From an arched window, he watched as the capital city of Ethos; Ashakiran- meaning the 'ray of hope', or 'hope's light'-depending on the translation, came to life. It was a bustling city, filled with flaunted magical mastery and beauty.
The richest nobles of Ethos liked to flaunt their wealth by having mansions and small castles built on giant masses of rock that were held up in the air by magic power.
A golden ray of magical energy beamed out from the city toward a 'mountain' in the distance.
This was, in fact, not a mountain but the Academy of Magi. The home of all the 'good' Magi in the kingdom and, perhaps, the entire world.
Alaric Zhivago; King of Ethos and Head Magician of State. These were his 'title's' as the ruler of Ethos.
He was a grand-fatherly figure that was also very powerful. He wore majestic silver robes and purple with gold-trimmed vestments that came with the position of king.
The largest, silver robes he wore, were covered in magical runes that were inscribed in a faint gold color. These runes were difficult to see with untrained eyes and were capable of boosting one's magical abilities to the wearer's full-potential.
Alaric had ruled Ethos for the past few centuries, having an extended life-span, due to his accomplished life as a Magi.
He was getting very old, even as a Magi, and the daily activities of his position were taking their toll on his tired, old body. He needed to find an acceptable replacement that could lead Ethos into a new age of prosperity.
This was mostly wishful thinking on his part as he, once again, went through his mental list of candidates. All of them were too young, either in body or mind, or were too susceptible to the temptations of the dark side of magic.
Looking out at the city, the center of life for Ethos, he watched the morning sun rise. The city sparkled and glowed in the sun's rays. Some of the glowing devices below were for lighting the streets during the night. The city simply looked brilliant and majestic in the mornings.
He liked to look upon it to gather strength and resolve for the coming day, with its political manuverings and administrative tasks, that would make him seek out his bed chambers far earlier than he would normally like to.
At first, Destin had thought it just another mountain. He had traveled all day within sight of it and, as he got closer, realized a beam of light was streaking out behind the top of it.
The beacon of light.
The ray of hope that connected the Academy of Magi to the capital city of Ethos, Ashakiran. The sheer size of the Magi Academy was enormous. No, that would be an understatement. It reached so high as to brush the clouds themselves....actually, did it go above the clouds!?
Destin was awed by the immense super-structure. It surpassed reason in scope and size to such a point that it was an unreasonable existence, yet there it stood, even over neighboring mountains.
He had, of course, heard the stories of its grandeur and size. But, seeing it for himself, no description could do this place justice. After traveling for days within sight of it, he had finally arrived at the base of the veritable mountain.
Stepping up in the line entering the 'Academy' he stated his name to the gaurds at the gate.
"My first name is Destin, last name is Yuudai" -To which the guards looked to one another for some odd reason.
"Reason for entering?"-The soldier asked, though he knew the answer already, as it was his duty.
"To become a student of the Maji"-Destin said hopefully.
"Very well, you may enter. Look for a building that says, 'Administorum'"-The soldier said
"Thank you and good day sir"-Destin said with polite gratitude.
Walking inside the arched gate-way, he temporarily forgot how to breathe. A huge city spread out before him and all sorts of magical activities and devices could be seen everywhere he looked.
"Out of the way new comer!"-A stranger said, before bumping Destin to the side roughly.
"You're blocking the entrance to Academy city, move it!"-The stranger yelled
Looking back behind him he saw a merchant caravan ready to run him down, impatient to trade their goods.
"S-Sorry, sir"-Destin tried to apologize but was mostly ignored.
"Look for the Administorum' huh?" Destin recited in his mind. Not seeing anything that said that, he decided to ask the people nearby.
"Excuse me, sir? Could you tell me where i might find the Administorum?-Destin asked a nearby person selling his wares at a stall.
"The center of the city, lad. Would you like to try one of my meat pies? They're magically delicious!"-The hawker exclaimed.
Destin's stomach seemed to have a mind of it's own as it grumbled at the man's question....
"S-sure, how much is it?"-Destin inquired
"Only, 8-pence!"-The hawker said proudly.
"Huh? 8-pence?! That's double the price of the meat pie in the town just outside from here!"-Destine retorted back at the hawker.
"So? I'll bet that mine are twice as good or your money back!"-The hawker boasted.
Destin's stomach grumbled again at the sight of food and its wonderful smells.
"Fine, i'll take one"-Destine said grudgingly. He only had a few dozen pence on him and he was about to spend nearly a quarter of his available funds on lunch alone!
Trying the meat pie, he had to agree with the hawker. It was by far the best he'd had in his whole life. Nodding to the man, he turned to leave as the man spoke again.
"By the way lad, this city can be rather expensive, be wary of those who claim extraordinary things for most things sold here are not what they may seem at first"-The hawker said with a warning before returning to all smiles and shouting about his 'magically delicious' meat pies.
They were good, he'll give him that, as Destin wolfed down the remainder as he kept walking towards what he thought was the center of the city.
Over the course of the day and asking more people for directions he finally arrived in front of a large building. It was larger than any building, castle, mansion, or other-wise structure he had seen before coming here. The building had guards around it too for some reason that Destin did not know of.
"Hello sir's, i was told that i should come here....? I want to become a Magi"-Destin said with uncertainty in his voice.
A single guard simply raised a thumb behind him towards the large doors beyond. Nodding to him, Destin continued on-wards and into the building.
Inside the building, he entered a vast, domed, chamber. There were several lines waiting to speak with the clerics that sat behind a raised bar where they scribbled things down. Sometimes a scribe would lead people down the corridor in the back of the chamber. Occasionally, they would return with those same people and ordered them to leave.
"Awe, they must be testing for the ability to use magic back there"-Thought Destin.
After waiting in a line for a couple hours, it was finally his turn. The scribe asked all kinds of questions, some reasonable, some not. For instance, one question asked who he was related to, another was where he was from.
Then some not so reasonable questions, like, was he a virgin....he had responded by saying "That's no business of yours nor anyone else's".
Perhaps the surprising thing was that the scribe never inquired further, merely writing, Destin assumed, his answers down behind the wall like partition.
Chapter: 2
After a while of both mundane and a few outrageous questions he was led down the hallway he'd seen others go down earlier. The scribe led him to a strange room with a glowing, deep-blue, orb in the center.
"Place your hands on the ball please, also, if you have any magical devices on your person, then please remove them before touching the orb"-Scribe said in a monologue tone from saying this countless times.
Not taking any chances, Destin simply removed all his belongings. Then a question struck him.
"What about my robe? It's made from a Zhargot i killed on my way here"-Destin asked
The scribe, upon hearing this, seemed to twitch and say "Hmm, to be safe you should probably remove that as well"
Destin, removing the robe, walked up and placed his hands on the glowing orb.
Then, color and....power exploded into his world view as if he was caught up in a maelstrom of energies, battling for control.
The sense of time and place, meaningless.
Vague impressions where indescribable powers clashed.
He thought he would drown from the pressure, his mind scattered to the winds of the tempest.
His body, burned to ashes and scattered....
"Sir, are you alright?" -The scribe suddenly popped into existence next to Destin.
Destin realized it was over, whatever that was.
"Wha-what was that!"-Destin screamed, terrified, he jumped away from the orb that had nearly cast his 'self' to the abyss.
"That orb can show a person's potential magic abilities.....yours it quite high i see..."-The scribe looked somewhat afraid, mirroring if to a lesser extent, Destin's face.
"It's been calibrated to unlock the potential someone can have for using magic. Though, because of this, it only allows this for a few seconds for safety"
"That, that thing nearly destroyed my mind!" -Destin began to rage about how dangerous it was.
The scribe had seen this reaction a few times before, only a few, but the reactions were similar. Those who would become powerful Magi all had similar opinions when first brought here and underwent the screening.
"Sir, all Magi in the world undergo the same kind of screening.-The scribe calmly informed and continued;
"The reaction you just had, as others have before, shows that you'll become a famous and powerful Magi in the future"-The scribe said calmly, knowing this lad could..... no, would, one day become his boss....provided the young man passed all of his tests.
"It helps us place people of similar talents and ability, consider it as your first test from the Academy of Magi"-The scribe said almost happily, gazing at the orb while Destin calmed down.
"Now, if you could gather your things and follow me, i can show you to your quarters"-The scribe said, walking towards the entrance of the room.
Destin gathered his things and followed. His nerves were frayed, that thing had tossed him about like a storm at sea. Following the scribe, they turned left at the door they had entered and continued down quite a ways.
Then the scribe produced a key from his robes and stuck it into the dead-end of the hallway they were in. Magical seals lit up and formed a watery looking oval. It shifted and spun with a translucent appearance.
"Through here sir"-The scribe said, holding a hand out towards the strange portal, indicating him to step through it.
Destin gathered his courage and stepped through the portal, he was suddenly hit by what seemed a strong, buffeting wind, and then into a bright and loud chamber. Perhaps it was better described as a vast, multi-leveled hall.
The 'hall' was filled with thousands of people of varying ages. Bright globes near the ceiling illuminated the vast room with an incandescent light. A multitude of books were scattered through-out the area on all levels of the place.
"Greetings sir"-A woman said, who had gone unnoticed till now.
"This is known as the Hall of Novices or the Welcome chamber"-She continued on. She had long blonde hair, wore black robes, and had a pointed hat that appeared to have been sat on at one point in time.
"H-hello, miss, my name is Destin, Destin Yuudai"-Destin introduced himself, getting a very small smile in return.
"If you'd please step down, and away from the portal's entrance we can show you to your rooms"-She said in a monologe.
Several people sat at a table nearby, watching the new arrivals, making bets and predictions as to what each person coming through the Novice Portal would become or do as a profession.
These people were students that had spent a few years doing this and had made money from the bets that were made. This new arrival had an odd hair color, making him stand-out.
"Well, Destin Yuudai, if you'd be so kind to follow my familiar to your assessment chamber, we'll begin your sorting, thank you"-The blonde Magi droned on.
That's when Destin noticed a small creature leap off the woman's should and start flying in front of him.
"It's known as a fairy"-She informed to his shocked expression
Following the fairy down a side corridor that could fit a dozen people abreast without bumping into each other, they stopped in front of a door. It had an indented circle in the middle and two bar like shapes going across its width.
The fairy flew into the hole inside the indent and a shortly after, the door opened to reveal a miniature amphitheater. On the center pedestal, was another of those glowing orbs, this one was white though.
On the stone benches were, what he assumed, the one's who'd be his evaluators. Across from them were others who were of varying age, but much younger than those they sat across from.
"Please take a seat" -An evaluator said.
Taking a seat, Destin sat and waited. Watching the other's, one by one, place a hand on the orb. The evaluators would then give the student a letter-rank.
The rank's seemed largely disproportionate. "E" then "C" and then a "B", then another "E", followed by "D".
There were a lot of E and D designated students that seemed to be the norm. There were two C's and just that one B that he'd seen before it was his turn.
Walking down the steps, Destin placed a hesitant hand on the orb.
It was like the same as last time, though less intense, perhaps because he expected it this time...
Removing his hand he awaited his grade while whispers began to circulate behind him.
"What is your name?"-The oldest of the evaluators asked
"Destin, Destin Yuudai sir"-Destin replied.
"Young Destin Yuudai, the grade that you showed is too great for Novice grading, so, for the time being, you will be placed in A class"-The old sage said softly.
Exclamations were heard behind him as they heard the first A-grade announcement. Destin largely ignored them.
"If i may ask, why di"-Destin, was apparently, not going to be allowed to ask.
"Please follow mister Robaire, he will answer your questions"-The oldest man said, followed by
"Next!"
"Right this way Destin Yuudai"-A man, middle-aged and wearing spectacles said politely.
Following this mister Robaire, Destin began thinking more on what the scribe had said. He said as much to Robaire.
"The scribe at the Administorum said i'd be a powerful Magi one day"-Destin said out loud
"I would not put too much thought on that, there are many more trials to be administered yet" "But if you pass them all, then yes, in the years or rather, decades to come, you will be quite powerful indeed."-Robaire answered Destin's quiet remark.
"Whoa, wait a minute, decades?!?"-Destin exclaimed
"Why yes, given all the best circumstances, a decade will seem frivolous after a century or two, given that your ability will likely lead to a very long life"-Robaire continues with "Powerful Magi are blessed with extremely long life-spans, thought to be caused by the excessive use of magic, although we're not entirely sure of the reason for this.
For example, The dark magi that rules Zeflen to the south, Khalid Kalaraja, has ruled that nation for over 500 years now. And our own king, Alaric Zhivago, has ruled Ethos for a little over 300 years. Trust me, a decade will mean little to you, as you have the potential to live just as long as they."-Robaire
All Destin could say was "Wow"
"Indeed, i myself am approaching my 120th birthday"-Robaire said
"Really! I thought you only in your forties!"-Destin exclaimed
Robaire just smiled and said "by the way, how old are you young Destin?"
"Only 25 sir"-Destin said
"Hmmm, i think that's about the same age as i when i started using magic. So in all likely-hood you'll age about the same as me i bet"-Robaire said in a friendly manner.
Entering a room with glittering devices and appartus's, Robaire sat down at a desk and pointed to Destin for him to sit.
"Now then" Robaire said with a bit of a sigh. "As i was foretold to be an inventor and evaluator, so too shall your future be foretold, according to your talents and passions"-Robaire announced, giving the young man a clue as to how this all worked.
"This device here"-Robaire held up a strange tubular object, "Is able to predict what the most likely outcome of what you will become in the future"-Robaired continued, saying "Mine was to be more or less as you can see. I like to tinker with things to see how they work and improve their function, if i can. I also liked to help other's understand things. That is how i ended up in my current position."
"The predictions aren't always 100% accurate, but close enough to be considered as future occupations."
"I'm actually quite interested in what your future will be young Destin"-Robaire kept saying with a smile.
"Now, just put your right fist into this end here and wait"-Explained mister Robaire.
Doing as he was told, he stuck his right fist into the tube. Then the bulbous, middle part, seemingly sprang into life. Golden circles and runes popped into existence, spreading outward to begin spelling out Destin's future.
As the runic letters continued to align themselves into more words, both teacher and student's eyes began to read the strange prediction.
Chapter 3:
"Destin Yuudai"
"Gold runes....."-Robaire mumbled before a realization hit him.
"I, I'll be right back, please stay here"-With that, Robaire ran out of the room.
Destin just sat there in stunned silence..."Are golden runes not normal? What's going on?"-Destin wondered.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the world; Rashanen continent:
All the tribes were gathering at Khaldari. This was only the second time that Zia Isolde had been here. The first had been her rise to tribal leader.
Looking down from the mountain-side at the ancient ruins on the sacred ground, she thought of what it must have once been like. These sacred ruins told of her peoples long-lost history, forgotten even in ages past.
There, she spotted her arch rival, Erica Rory, that infernal dark priestess of fire and night! How she'd love to freeze that heartless wench's soul into a million shattered pieces! But, she could not, not here anyway, not on this sacred ground.
She gave the signal to descend to her tribe that followed her here on their long trek through the desert wastes that held many dangerous beasts. It was a perilous journey for anyone to make, at least alone.
Making it down the mountain side she noticed a boulder move, ever so subtly...
Her spear whirled towards the rock in less time than it took to blink. The illusion was dispelled and the rock became Ajax, the powerfully strong warrior of renown. There had been talk of having him become the first clan leader in centuries.
"As sharp as ever, eh, Zia?" -He said playfully
He was always trying to bed her, it was annoying. But it was also allowed to continue because he was strong. That and the fact it enraged Erica to no end that this man had chosen to follow her instead.
"Aren't you being too casual Ajax"-Zia responded
"You really think so?"-Ajax said with the ghost of a smile on his face as he eyed her up and down, as subtly as he could.
It was not subtle enough. She 'subtly' pressed her spear-point against his neck, just short of drawing blood.
"If i were to twitch, i think you would be found at having broken sacred law my lady"-Ajax said seriously, though slightly emphasizing the word 'my' too much to her liking.
Withdrawing her spear, she strode away without another word. Knowing full well that he was watching her walk away, she swayed her hips in an ever-appetizing way just to tease him. She smiled.
Making her way towards the central pyramid in the valley, she spotted Erica waiting at the entrance for her. Her mood went sour quick.
"I'm surprised you could make it all the way here from the northern fringes"-Erica said mockingly, as she stood with her arms crossed, with a smug look on her face.
"And i'm surprised the southern wastes haven't had the delight of picking your sun-dried carcass clean yet"-Zia retorted.
"That sounded like a threat little girl"-Erica said dangerously.
"And if it was? What then, huh?"-Zia
Erica Rory's eyes smoldered a deep red and it seemed as if, for only a second, that there were flames there. Turning away from Zia, she strode off into the pyramid-like structure.
Smiling in self-satisfaction, Zia followed after. "Score one for me"-Zia thought in her head.
Magi Academy:
It had been a very eventful night, hectic even. Mr Robaire had literally ran to the headmaster of the school to report the news about Destin Yuudai's destiny.
The headmaster and several other high-ranking Magi of the Academy had then held an emergency meeting. Summoning Destin to the headmasters office near the top of the Academy, much to Destin's dismay.
He was literally, summoned, to the office.
Destin was waiting for Mr Robaire to return when a blueish magic circle appeared above and below him, spinning counter-clockwise to each other. Then a flash of light and a strange numbing sensation was felt before he realized he had been transported to another room.
"Destin Yuudai"-A very old and sagely appearing man said gravely. He had long white hair and bony hands, the only thing noticeable from the various robes he seemed to be wearing.
"Because of your earlier magic placement test and now this future occupation prediction....."
"Occupation prediction? All it said was my name..."-Destin began saying.
"You will, from this day forth, be under a discreet, protective services guard. This group will not be noticed by the regular students, nor most staff members. You shall not leave the Academy grounds until you can adequately defend yourself either, magic or in force of arms"-Headmaster announced to Destin, ignoring his comments.
"I shall have my own elite guard watch over you as well"-The old man continued, "I will also notify his majesty, Alaric Zhivago of this as well, so be prepared to meet him young man."
"By our information, your father was a soldier in the national army with a rather unique ability. He could sense the ability of Magi, much like the assessment orbs we have. Hmmm, i can only conclude that he sent you here so that you did not accidentally end up hurting yourself or others through unintentional magic use."
"I wish you luck, fortune, and a long life, Destin Yuudai"
With that Destin had been transported to a small room where a single door was the only exit. Opening the door, Destin found a person waiting for him. She had blueish-purple hair and wore a maid outfit.
"Destin Yuudai?"-The maid said
"Yes?"-Destin said hesitantly, still confused and disoriented.
"I will be your personal maid, as all B-grade and above students do, to allow them more time to study. I am also your protector as well, though none may be allowed to know this. My name is Camilla as that is what i am"- Camilla explained
"Camilla ?"-Destin asked, "That's a rather, um, odd name don't you think?"
"Camilla , means warrior maiden, master Yuudai"-Camilla stated formally.
"Okay...?" "So, um....where do i sleep, or go to class, or"-Destin started barraging the poor battle maid.
"One at a time master, i can only answer one question at a time"-The maid said calmly.
Though on the inside she was seething somewhat. She had to babysit this punk instead of her normal tasks now. Usually she worked as a spy and in espionage for Ethos. Sometimes as an assassin.....But now, she was to protect this...boy.
Whom apparently was to become the next ruler of Ethos if he was indeed the hero of prophecy. If, or rather, when word got out about him, her hands would be full. This was to be her job for the foreseeable future, and with no time-off!
"Your bed-chamber is through the door on your left, the door to the right is the wash-room, the next door down on the left is your private study...."-Camilla started explaining the layout to the young man, while cursing on the inside for being picked for such a humiliating task.
Though, in the future, she was sure that it would be more exciting. For now however, it was unbearable to serve this young, most-likely stuck-up, noble piece of...
"And at the end of the hallway is the exit of your rooms into the men's dormitory proper"-Camilla continued aloud.
She's actually kind of pretty if it weren't for her eyes.....it's like her eyes seem to emanate hate whenever i look at her. Maybe it's just because of the weird red color? Then again i have strange red hair soo...maybe its not that strange.
Leaving his 'rooms' that were more like a royal suite, he entered the dormitory proper as she had called it. Men of various ages and maids abound shuffled this way and that.
The center of the area held a large, winding stair case that went up or down, seemingly forever. Along the edges of the staircase were sets of long, white tables that held books or plates of food as the people talked, read, or ate at them.
Along the walls were more doors, one after another. Destin also noticed numbers with a letter attached to them. Looking back at his own door he saw his, 77-N-39. Studying it and trying to memorize it, a person walked by and explained it to him.
"It means, 77th floor, North wing, room 39"-A scruffy, short-cropped blonde man said. He looked to be of a similar age to himself too.
"Oh, thanks, My name is Destin Yuudai by the way, nice to meet you"-Destin said holding out his hand.
"The man just looked down at his hand in confusion for a moment before taking it with a broad smile.
"My name is Joakim Arvad, a pleasure"-Joakim said, shaking Destin's hand and continued
"So your new here huh? I can give ya tour since i just got done with my last class of the day"-Joakim offered.
"Thank you, that would be great, i don't even know where the classrooms are, honestly"-Destin said
"Allow me to lead the way then"-Joakim, said a bit over-enthusiastically.
Chapter 4:
"The Academy of Magi is huge of course, but not everything was built in order you see. Everything got added on over the centuries in a rather haphazardly way so there's a lot of things that are farther apart than they should be.
To that end we use transport portals to get around rather quickly from one general area to the next. But there's still a lot of walking and steps to keep us all fairly fit"-At the last part Joakim had a smile.
Seems that last bit was his opinion Destin thought.
"This here is the entrance and exit to the Men's Northern dormitory, at least on this level"-Joakim said. Pointing to alcove niche's set against a wall with soft glowing lights above and runic symbols below.
"The light on top will tell you if someone is about to come through or not to avoid unpleasant situations" "The symbols on the bottom"-joakim tapped one-"is for selecting a destination, i just selected the closest mess hall since i'm hungry"
With that, Joakim stepped into the alcove and vanished in a blue flash that was noticeably dim. Following his example, Destin hit the same symbol and stepped into it....
A barrage of noise hit him as hundreds or thousands of voices were all conversing or, as some were, shouting at each other. The din was very loud, and waiters bustled to and fro from the various dining tables that easily sat a hundred people each.
"This is North wing's mess hall. A quarter of all Magi students and teachers eat here!"-Joakim said in a raised voice
A quarter of everyone in the Academy of Magi ate here.....he could believe it since he couldn't see an end to the hall.
Joakim was looking at him with a smile.
"The mess hall is a giant, circular hall, with the kitchen's and toiletries in the center area. Just place an order at one of the open booths where a chef is and they'll give you a ticket. After a while they'll bring you your food!"-Joakim explained to him, raising his voice to be heard above the general din.
They placed their orders and sat at a nearby table, placing their 'tickets' next to them. Now Destin knew what all the glowing things were all around the tables were. 'Tickets' A translucent, glowing numbers and letter's identified them as the order's recipients.
Joakim tried to talk, or rather shout, about the monetary system of the Academy but eventually gave up as their food arrived. They ate and promptly left the mess hall to a quieter location.
"Wow, i think its even louder than usual in there today"-Joakim said poking his ears, followed by shaking his head.
"Oh yeah? How could you tell? There's got to be thousands talking in there, given the size and the population of this whole place"-Destin asked
"Well, normally i don't actually have to shout, just to be heard..."-Joakim answered Destin's quizzical look.
"Anyways, how about we get you acquainted with the area i just left before meeting, huh?"-Joakim said with a smile.
"What is this place? There's hardly anyone around"-Destin pointed out the fact that this was the most sparsely populated place he'd seen by far.
"Well, this is the study hall, or tutor hall. Though most doing those things will be in the rooms to either side of the hall. Otherwise this place tends to double as a meeting place for various people..."-Joakim said with what seemed a mischievous attitude.
"Many tend to try dating and use the rooms to the sides for some 'alone' time"-Joakim said with a broad smile while doing lewd hand-motions and similar things.
"Okay, okay, i get it. Now where do i go for classes?"-Destin said, feeling a bit uncomfortable.
"Ahahahaha, okay, this symbol here"-Joakim said turning around, back the way the had just come and continuing his explanations.
Stepping through after Joakim, Destin was wondering just how many were actually in all the rooms that had the doors closed back in that 'Study Hall'....
Then, a din of noise once again hit him like a wave. Yup, his favorite place so far had been the previous location. Magi students crammed the corridors all around.
Some carried books and writing utensils and parchment. Some stood around in groups chatting, while others simply flew above the others, in a hurry it seemed, to be somewhere else.
"Here, you're allowed to use magic, as long as you follow the guidelines and rules of acceptable magic use, of course"-Joakim didn't exactly seem like the type of person to, eh hem, strictly follow all the rules.
Joakim led Destin down a few levels to where there were less people and more room to walk. Turning at an intersection and taking the first door to the right, Joakim opened the door and motioned for Destin to follow. The room smelled rather putrid, and in general, it was a bit nauseating.
"Hey professor! I'm showing a newbie around! Do ya got a novice booklet lying around somewhere!"-Joakim yelled into the vast and messily arranged room.
There were all kinds of chemistry-related objects around, from magical burners and test tubes. To the large cauldrons and cabinets with various things inside that Destin couldn't even guess as to what they were used for.
It appeared as though Joakim had brought him to an alchemy shop that had exploded from a violent customer's outburst. It was in fact, a classroom that was over for the day, and clean-up had yet to be started.
Destin found Joakim and a unruly gray-haired, man standing over the source of the smell in the back of the cluttered room.
The old man wearing giant, multi-layered, bifocals looked up with a smile, "How do you do lad? My name is, bah, everyone here just simply calls me professor bifocals anyways"-Professor Bifocals said, turning his head to look back down into the cauldron and chuckling lightly.
"So, um, professor, whatcha' doin'?"-Destin asked, pinching his nose.
"Making magic potions, what else would i..oh, ya you must've just arrived eh?
"Yeah...."-Destin answered, leaning over the cauldron to look inside. Joakim suddenly pushed him back to keep him from looking inside.
"Put on some glasses first, otherwise a bubble could splash up into your eyes and then you'd be blind."-Joakim said.
"Mmhmm, Joakim boy, here, is right about that"-Professor bifocals agreed with Joakim.
Joakim, handing Destin a pair of bifocals, moved to the side to let him peer into the cauldron.
It was a bubbling mass of swirling color. Actually, the best that Destin could describe it as was, "Pretty"
"That it is, isn't it?" They both agreed with Destin.
"So what do ya watch it for besides that?"-Asked Destin
"We need to keep a close eye on it to make sure a sudden change in the coloring doesn't occur. Otherwise it could get dangerous...or turn into something completely unknown"-The later was said by the professor, who seemed a bit too excited about the possibility of 'unknown'.
Chapter 5:
Khalid Kalaraja's Private chambers:
Also known as the 'everlasting lord of death', Khalid had been the Magi Emperor of Zeflen for over 500 years. The terrible and tyranical ruler who ruled by pure magical might and talent within the 'dark arts' of magic. A dark wizard of unimaginable power and possessing a keen insight to the intent of others had kept him among the living this long.
Evil magi could typically outlive their 'good' counter-parts, though this rarely happened because of the large amount of in-fighting and politically-based assassinations committed to advance their position in the hierarchy of the empire.
This caused them to fight more with themselves than with their rivals to the north more often than not. This did, however, tend to make the most powerful Magi in the empire the rulers and formed the back-bone of its military power.
The trust between Magi in the empire was little to nonexistent as those considered 'friends' would eventually try to kill each other in future centuries in pursuit of greater power.
The non-Magi of the empire were largely used as sacrificial pawns and slaves. No one would enjoy a life in the empire of Zeflen if they couldn't use magic, at least most wouldn't.
Some had talents for particular area's and were allowed to do business and live as they desired, provided they paid a 'tax' and didn't interfere with the work of the Magi that is.
This allowed the non-Magi citizens to pursue normally illegal work that would land anyone in, say, an Ethos prison cell for life. Assassination guilds, Slaver guilds, all manner of businesses were controlled by guilds that were overseen by at least one Magi.
And Khalid Kalaraja knew about all goings-on in his empire. Especially the Assassination Guilds, for obvious reasons however, he was also the head of the most well-known of them all.
He had been a young Magi a long, long time ago, and had originally begun funding his own guild to turn a profit....and perhaps it had also been for experience? He couldn't remember something from soo long ago.
His guild was the most famous in all the world now though....oh yes, it was indeed.
The Assassination Guild of Kek Mo.
Going over the monthly report of his profits, he smiled. It had been a good couple of years for his business in the lands of Maldred, the coalition of islands that were touted as the commerce capital of the world.
They sat right in the middle of the world, the Magi nations to the west and the tribal nation-continent of Rashanen to the east.
A land filled with brutality and exotic goods.
Exotic animals and plants that had a plethora of medicinal uses, to rare gems and minerals that were sought after everywhere.
The trader nation seemed to have been having some kind or form of civil war...In-fighting over trade rights and the like, killing off their competitors and such. It was a lucrative time for assassinations in their lands.
Wondering about how long he could potentially prolong this development, he yanked the chain of a pleasure slave from the wall to come closer...
Magi Academy
Over the past few weeks Destin had begun to set into a routine as a Magi student. His new friend was Joakim Arvad who was known around as the 'charming trouble-maker'. Destin really didn't care about that though, he had acquired his own little nickname as well, the 'mighty unusable'.
He was given an A-grade but was the only one in such a high grade that was unable to freely control his magic...giving him the lesser used, 'Mighty academic', which he personally like more and thought that was why they called him that less often.
He did well in mathematics and sciences, but for anything practical, he was practically use-less. He got more an more frustrated that he could not freely control his magical powers. The only time he seemed to be able to use them was when he thought his life was in danger, or that of someone else's.
A few who had seen these rare moments had called him the 'magical savior'. On the other hand, he was merely mediocre with the use of arms. The only thing of note was he did a little better with a sword. Which was probably thanks to his dad's training, prior to setting out for the Academy of Magi.
He still got a little giddy every time he thought about where he was. Like a kid in a candy store and told that they could have whatever they wanted. He was on his way to becoming a Magi.
The problem was not being able to be one whenever he felt like it. His teacher's had come up with several possible reason's for his magic block. The most disturbing of the two more outlandish one's was that he needed to be in battle and kill. The second was just as uncomfortable, if for a different reason.
"Master Yuudai, sir Arvad is here"-Camilla called out.
"Sir Arvad? Oh Joakim!" -Destin thought and then called back from his study, "Okay!"
Placing a marker on the page, he closed the book, and stood up. Heading out the study door he saw his friend poking his head around the door to the dormitory proper with a big grin on his face.
Hmmm.....suspicious.
"C'mon, Destin! Let's go! I got us a double date!"-Joakim sad excitedly.
Ah, that's why....wait. "And if i say no, does that mean your out of luck at long last?"-Destin said jokingly.
"That's not even funny man, now c'mon!"-Joakim called out before retreating behind the door.
"Any advice?"-Destin asked Camilla unenthusiastically.
She raised an eyebrow, "Be polite and pay close attention to her and your surroundings"
"Um, thanks Camilla"-Destin said heading out to the dormitory.
After the door closed Camilla's demeaner changed rapidly, going from polite and gentle to the extreme opposite. "Children, i'm stuck babysitting a child!"
"The boy's heads are in the gutter when they should be focusing their minds! Not.."-Camilla stopped ranting as she got a telepathic call from her employer. She nodded here and there and said yes or no to unheard questions.
After a time she went silent and motionless. "I suppose i should start training the boy in martial arts..."
In the 'study hall' Joakim had been unsure about Destin's willingness to do this sorta thing but they seemed to have hit things off just fine. He could practically see the sparks fly when they looked at each other.
Supposedly, Destin's date was from Maldred, here for academic purposes at the behest of her family or some such.
"So what was your friend's name again Reana?"-Joakim asked about his friend's date.
"Leora Farin."-Reana looked down the table at the two, shy, love-birds.
"They look good together and Destin could use some relaxation"-Joakim said heartily.
"Eh hem, Joakim, father wants to know the status of your training. The trouble's in Maldred trouble him of late"-Reana said, all business.
"Sshhh, keep your voice down, we're supposed to be young lover's on a date, right?"-Joakim chastised his younger sister.
"But in regards to that....(sighs heavily) it'll probably be another year or two before i'm cleared fit to lead troops into battle"-Joakim said, all business like in imitation of his sister.
"Father won't be very pleased to hear that. You've already spent the last 7 years here, or perhaps, you've been goofing off and neglecting your training?-Reana said with a raised eyebrow and an expression that said she knew he had been.
"It seems my reputation proceeds me!, Ahahahaha!"-Joakim said, laughing.
Destin looked down the table towards his friends laughter, "well they seem to be having fun"-he thought. Meanwhile, he and his own date had barely said more than a few words to each other and mostly just stared awkwardly at each other.
Deciding to break the ice a bit, he asked "So where ya from?"
"From the Maldred islands"-She said shyly though she didn't know why she was acting this way, it was totally unlike her.
"So, um, here on business then?"-Destin asked the obvious.
"Y-yes, academic studies on trade and commerce"-What's wrong with her, he's just another boy that wants to go to bed with her!
"Where are you from Destin?"-Why, did she like saying his weird name so much! Err, this is frustrating!
"H-here in Ethos, from a small mountain village, pretty...mundane really."-Why did i nearly stop at 'pretty'?!
She blushed a little at the word pretty, then got mad for doing so, making her turn more red....
Joakim looked back down the table, "Awe, my Destin made her blush. That's so cute"-Joakim said
"Hey, pay attention! Ignore those two for the time being, 'joke'em'"-Reana said, using her brother's old nickname from back home and getting his attention.
"Ya ya, i'm listening, i just can't help but watch the love-at-first-sight thing unfold down the table from us"-Joakim said with a smile and a unusual fondness.
"So, about Maldred, where your friend there is from. It's in turmoil with the higher-ups being taken out, go on"-said Joakim returning to being serious, a rare sight for anyone to witness.
"I cant stop staring at her eyes"-Destin thought, feeling awkward and embarrassed at the same time. He had honestly never felt like this before and he'd been on dates with several others, so why now? Why couldn't he...
"So, um, what are you, um, studying to be?"-She asked, showing none of her usual, confident demeaner.
"Uh, well, i guess that would be considered classified for the time being i guess"-Destin said, scratching the back of his head
"So mysterious, wait, no! i don't care! Yet..."-Leora's thoughts were all jumbled like a love-struck schoolgirl. She was nearly livid about it inside her mind.
"Well, if you can't talk about it, that's okay..."-She said aloud, cutely awkward could describe her by this time.
"S-sorry, i'm just not allowed to say right now"-Destin said, apologetically, looking down and away from her eyes for the first time in what seemed like forever.
A couple awkward hours later Joakim asked how things went, then promptly laughed in Destin's face when he couldn't give a straight answer to the question.
"Ha, i introduced you to the love of your life and that's all you have to say? I heard more stammering than words my friend! Ahahaha, your in love! Congrats!"-With that, Joakim left to find his own quarters. At least that's what the speechless Destin assumed.
As Destin entered his rooms, Camilla stood there, wating for him. She held 2 small wooden swords, well, more like daggers really. "Master Yuudai, this may be somewhat prudent of me, but, i think i should start training you so that you can defend yourself"-Camilla said.
"That sounds reasonable i suppose.."-Destin said, unsure about this.
Camilla tossed Destin a wooden dagger, who caught it by reflex, and before Destin could say anymore, as she attacked him.
Destin caught the wooden sword and the next thing he knew, Camilla was right in front of him, she swung her dagger in an arc that was aimed for his throat.
Surprised, he reflexively brought up his own dagger that he'd just caught the previous second. It wasn't quite quick enough, as Camilla's dagger crashed into his wrist after angling it downward slightly in an instant.
Destin yelled in pain and dropped his own wooden dagger just after catching it.
"You're being a little too serious about this, don't ya think?"-Destin asked, cradling his now-swelling wrist.
"This is a serious matter, master"-Camilla said in a no non-sense tone.
Destin groaned. This would be a very long night for him as Camilla made sure he at least knew the basics of self-defense before he was allowed to sleep.
Joakim was from a top military family in Ethos. His father was one of the three generals of Ethos, and he was the next generation of such.
He was in the Academy of Magi to learn tactics and receive top grade military training. Tonight, was one such night that he'd receive that training. Joakim would be fighting both armed, and, unarmed.
"Sleep well Destin, sleep well for the both of us my friend"-Joakim said in his head.
Walking into the training grounds of the Academy, he steeled himself, for he was about to receive brutal instruction from one of Ethos most elite fighters.
Leora Farin, Eldest child of the second richest family in Maldred. Once her tutorship was completed here, she'd be returning to her families estates and taking over the family business.
While she was away, she had just recentlyreceived word from home that father had 'retired' and now mother ran the business till she could return to take over.
Forming a relationship here in Ethos with a Magi student was rather pointless, futile. It would be looked at by her family as a wasted venture as it would not turn a profit.
"Still, i can't stop thinking about him...."-Leora said softly to herself.
"Well, i suppose writing one more essay on ethical trading will focus my troubled mind"-she said, resolving herself to forget Destin.
At least for the time being....
Somewhere in Maldred
The Maldred islands enjoyed temperate climates in the northern half while the southern half enjoyed more tropical climates.
The islands surrounding the main islands of Maldred were rugged, mountainous, barrier islands. Some would occasionally spew forth fire and ash, traditionally thought to be a fore-bearer of doom approaching...
In a cozy mansion in the southern most tropical island, in view of one such erupting mountain, a man puffed on his pipe. He wasn't used to working in the physical sense, and his light tunic was straining against his bulk.
The angry mountain in the distance mirrored his thoughts very well. The turmoil and general sense of unease was contagious. The past few years had seen the vast majority of the large trading houses fall into chaos as one head of family fell after another.
He figured the only reason he was still among the living was because he had retired to his little retreat here in the far south of Maldred on his estate.
Often coming here to enjoy the peace and quiet, and perhaps, on occasion, to plan his next big business or trading venture. But not now, now he was trying to figure out why the richest people in the nation were dying or vanishing without a trace.
Very few, including himself, had retired and handed the family business to the younger generations. Those few, who may yet still live like he, would probably die soon....somehow. Talk of killer shadows had been passed through rumor to him from a re-supply boat that had come to his pier a few days back.
That could only mean one thing, Kek Mo, the famous assassination guild of Zeflen.
The dark Magi emperor was systematically killing off the entire leadership of his beloved Maldred brethren. Sure there were heated rivalries and feuds, but they were all fellow country-men.
He, for the life of him, could not find an answer to as why that evil emperor was doing this. Didn't he see he was disrupting trade or was that the reason itself?
But wouldn't that affect his nation as well?
He puffed a few more smoke-rings into the air, sipping on his exotic tropical drink on the portico of his get-away estate, watching an angry mountain spew forth it's guts in the distance.
"Hmmmm"
"Why, i just can't figure out why he's doing this...."
"Because it's a lucrative business"-A strange voice said behind the bulky man
His eyes widened in surprise just before a dagger went into the base of his neck, angled up and into his skull, killing him instantly.
No one would see nor hear from the bulky old trader that was once the second richest man in Maldred again....
Chapter 6
On the other side of the world, a gathering of leading powers on the continent of Rashanen had taken place on sacred grounds at Khaladari.
"Now that all tribe leaders have gathered, let this meeting of the clans begin"-The elderly Aariz announced, as custom dictated a meeting of clans be overseen by at least one elder.
The rivalry was heated between the youngest tribe leader Zia and the, rather stern, tribe leader Erica. Zain hoped to the ancients that they would contain their resentment long enough to conclude this gathering and leave Khaladari.
Of course, as usual when a meeting took place, the tribe leader of the western fringes disputed her tribe's supposed right to monopolize on the animals of the region. "Typical, she does this at every meeting"-Zain thought.
"As was the answer last, so it is again"-Aariz said sagely though he gave her a reprimanding glare to show his displeasure.
"Eh hem, we are gathered here to discuss recent events foretold in the prophecy."-Aariz said solemnly.
"The traders shall weep, as the evil reaps"
"The guiding light trains, while darkness gains"
"The proud warriors quarrel, as citizens struggle"
"The world flickers on the brink, the dark abyss eagerly awaits"
.....
"Are you saying something has come true from these?"-Erica Rory questions doubtfully.
"Indeed leader Rory, word has reached my lands"-Annora, eldest tribe leader and youngest Elder states.
"The traders of Maldred are dying off and the Zeflen army is increasing its numbers"-Annora
"There have been portents of this 'guiding light' in the Academy of Magi in Ethos as well, though it has yet to be confirmed....to that end i would like to send one of you to find the truth of the matter."-Aariz
"Soo.....from what i've heard so far, it sounds like rumors and speculation"-Zia scoffed.
"And we sit here quarreling as the people of the world struggle to continue their daily lives"-Aariz states.
"The next we hear, could be that we are on this 'brink', at the time this meeting is held. Though i'm unsure of how to pull back from said 'brink'. The prophecy does not give any clue as to what this brink may be..."-Annora says, as she trails off in thought.
"Well, if we are to send someone to that Academy of Magi, i nominate Mahina"- Erica Rory suggests.
The elders look at her, then each other, then Aariz says-"Wise choice, the daughter of the moon is perhaps the best candidate we have to gather information....in that place.
"If that is your wish, elders"-Mahina says softly, respectfully.
Mahina had not said a word till now, not even so much as a twitch. She was a short, slim but well-toned woman. Raven-black hair, her eyes were a blueish-silver color. She dressed in tight-fitting leathers and light-black cloth. The only part of her that was uncovered were her eyes and hair. She was of the Ninjuzu clan in the shadow-lands, the least-known of the tribes.
Magi Academy
Destin's 'training' with Camilla the past few weeks was slow-learning and a painful lesson in his own short-comings as a warrior. He was focused mainly as a warrior mage and governance as a close second because of his predicted job as King of Ethos. Though excelling in his governing classes, he was sorely lacking in the fighting departments.
The only good thing of note was that he could now use the easiest of spells freely. Like manipulating air in a subtle way to float a pencil from the desk to his hand. Simple, easy things. Anything that was of importance or great use in the years to come was still beyond his ability.
"Damn this block of mine!"-Destin shouted in anger at the ceiling from the study in his private quarters.
"Are you alright master?"-Camilla inquired from the other side of the door.
"Fine"-Is all Destin replied.
Thinking back on his first freely usable spell, Destin thought of what had happened the previous week:
Another double-date in the study-hall had lead to he and Leora kissing, if by accident.
Joakim had hit him on the back, pushing his face into hers when they were having one of those awkward moments of staring at each other.
Thinking back on it he supposed it was comical, if he had not been the one involved....
"Master, it's time for your nightly sparring session"-Camilla called from beyond the door.
"Already?"-Destin asked himself. Looking to the time-piece however, showed that it was indeed early.
Getting up and opening the door, Destin started to ask Camilla why they were gonna spar so early, when transport circles appeared. The last thing before the flash of light that he saw was Camilla smiling....and maybe something said about luck.
Destin's vision returning, he was somewhere he'd never been before. It was like a grand coliseum, but one where entire armies could fight mock battles.
"Whoa..."-Destin said, amazed at the scale of it.
"Hey there buddy!"
"Joakim! What are you doing here!?"-Destin asked, completely astonished to see his friend here.
"Huh? I'm here basically every night Destin. You could call this my main class"-Joakim said with a half-smile.
"Good, you two seem to know each other"-A woman suddenly announced from behind Destin.
Turning around, Destin saw a woman in shimmering armor holding a cone-shaped spear.
"Tonight i've been instructed to tutor you, Destin Yuudai, as well as the slacker there next to you.
Destin looked over to Joakim to see him roll his eyes before a silvery flash flew past him to shoulder-bump his friend backwards several paces.
"Ow, you didn't say start or begin yet Esdeath!"-Joakim yelled in mock anger.
"Oh shush, i'll be giving you much worse before the night is out, again"-Esdeath said, mocking him.
"Umm, ah, i'm really no good as a warrior. Camilla has been teaching me the 'basics' as she called it but, "-Destin was saying with zero confidence in himself.
"Camilla? Camilla the battle maid?"-Esdeath asked, intrigued
"Yes...? You know my maid?"-Destin asked confused.
"Why yes, she's a friend and college of mine.....wait, you said she's your maid!?"-Esdeath suddenly said incredulously.
"Y-yes, that's right, she was assigned to me when i got here..."-Destin started explaining.
"Heh, ha, Bwaahahahaha!"-Esdeath started holding her mid-section with her free hand laughing as tears flowed from her eyes.
"That's great! Her.....serving....as....a...a....regular maid!"-Esdeath choked out between broken fits of laughter.
"Why is that so funny, miss Esdeath?"-Destin wondered
Wiping a tear from her eye she replied-"Because she's basically an assassin and warrior of the highest caliber. Mostly used to working in subterfuge missions...pffff, ahahahaha", she began laughing again as she pictured her professional friend's inner-turmoil at her current mission.
Calming down again she continued, "Well newbie, lets see what you've been able to learn from my friend the last couple of week's".
With that last word, Esdeath had launched herself straight towards them, throwing up dirt and dust from her sudden movement.
"She's so fast! Even with all that armor on her!"-Destin exclaimed inside his mind while he brought his hands up by reflex. He had not been her first target though as she struck Joakim, next to and a little behind him.
Destin also noticed, for the first time, that Joakim held an actual weapon. One that was not for sparring or practice sessions, but one that was meant to kill.
Joakim held a staff with a double edged blade at each end. He had blocked and counter-attacked Esdeath's strike on him. The handle-end of her oddly shaped spear hit Destin in the gut, sending him backward to fall and roll backwards to stop on his knees, coughing in pain.
"That was mean"-Joakim said to her, somewhat disrespectful to her as a 'teacher'.
"Then do something about it"-Esdeath mocked Joakim
"Find a weapon you like Destin"-Joakim called behind before starting an intense duel with his teacher.
His coughing fit dying down, Destin groaned and looked behind him to the racks that he just now had seen. They held every kind of weapon imaginable. Grabbing a hooked sword, the same kind that his father had showed him how to use, he went back to help his friend in the 'sparring' match.
Destin suddenly sat up straight in his bed, waking up. There a groan was heard from him as the pains that came from waking assailed him.
Destin, surprised at first, asked-"Wha-what happenned?" he asked tentatively, testing his bodies numerous bruises.
"It seems she did not go easy on you and nearly killed you. The Magi's Medi-Core unit brought you in here, with orders to let you sleep.
That was several days ago.....i'll go fetch an order of food for you, please stay put"-Camilla said, with an almost caring tone that was completely unlike her.
"Wait.....several days ago!"-Destin reflexively tried to get out of bed when Camilla turned and gave him a murderous glare.
"I said, 'Please' stay put"-Camilla said with a little venom, though her heart wasn't in it and emphasized 'please'.
Groaning again, Destin laid back down and said, closing his eyes, "Sounds like good advice, ya, okay..."
"Joakim does that each night!? How is it he's alive?"-Destin wondered aloud.
"It's probably because he's had years of practice master"-Camilla said from the hallway, just outside the room...before Destin began dozing off again.

Her.....serving....as.....a....regular maid!"-Esdeath choked out between broken fits of laughter.
Chapter 8:
Zia raised her spear into the air, signalling them to stop.
"Who are you and where do you come from?"-Zia asked dangerously. This particular area wasn't truly claimed by any clan, but...strangers near 2 days travel from her border seemed...like a bad omen to her.
She could see absolute fear in the older man.
She saw...determination in the younger one?
"Speak now or die where you stand!"-She threatened them. She would not go easy on these boys, a chance sure, but easy?
No. They were dressed in a similar fashion to those from Zeflen...people able to use 'magics'.
The younger boy raised his hands into the air, palms toward her.
She and her followers immediately tensed, expecting some kind of magic but none came. The boy began waving his hands and shaking his head upon seeing them ready themselves.
"Ethos"-Zia said, to which both men began nodding their heads.
'Curious...two men from Ethos and yet neither can speak our common tongue here...'-shaking her head clear of the amusing and yet troublesome thought, she pointed her spear at them and then to the ground in front of her. Then hit the butte of the spear into the ground.
They seemed confused so she pointed at them, then to herself, then to in front of her...then pointed at the ground in front of her again while getting frustrated that talking wasn't going to happen anytime soon. Perhaps she should learn other languages...then again, she had no desire or reason to leave Rashanen.
After an awkward few minutes of pointing and gesturing, they indeed came to her.
Examining both up close, she now saw that the younger man was more...respectable, at least in her eyes as a warrior, or perhaps maybe a leader?. The older was like a fearful old wise-man. He seemed the type that would complain a lot over anything that required actual work.
Something about the younger man though...she couldn't pin-point it, but there was something...'he spoke!'-Zia thought.
XXXX
Destin didn't know what to do. This angry looking woman and those behind her all held spears, ready to skewer the two of them.
After watching her point and gesture he realized that he had to go to her...'maybe it's a custum thing? I have to go to her or something like that?'-Destin thought.
Standing in front of her, she put them under intense scrutiny. The sheer intensity of her eyes had caused him a small gasp and Khorvax to begin trembling, refusing to even meet her gaze.
Unable to bear the gaze, silence, and ever-present danger that stood all around, Destin decided to finally start speaking.
Destin-"Hello, my name is Destin(he gives a short bow) and over here is Khorvax"(Destin waved his hand over at his classmate as he said his name causing a few spears to inch closer).
The woman stared at him a moment and then looked at Khorvax.
"Deztan, Korvaks"-she said, pointing at each.
Destin's eyebrow twitched at the miss-pronounciation.
"Des-tin"-he said pointing at himself.
"Khor-vax"-he said pointing at his fellow.
"Zia"-she said pointing at herself, as she did so however, a twitch at the corners of her mouth went up.
'She's trying not to smile!'-Destin exclaimed inside his head.
"Ethos"-Destin pointed to himself and Khorvax.
"Magic accident"-Destin began looking around as if lost or an idiot, he hoped the former.
"Maaagix, Magic"-the woman said, apparently trying the words he was conveying, getting the sounds right.
"Isha!"-the woman suddenly yelled, raising her left, open palm towards the ground behind him.
Looking back, Destin saw a large ice crystal and a large area of dirt now-covered in ice.
Turning back to face her, she said-"Magic?"
Destin could only nod yes.
Nodding, in satisfaction it seemed, she turned her head towards everyone within the circle while giving orders it would seem.
Soon, they were bound with rope and roughly forced to follow them, ultimately to some kind of camp...
Magi Academy: 2weeks later
Joakim Arvad wandered the vast myriad of hallways and passageways of the Academy, his mood was sour, saying little to anyone he encountered.
'Destin, the only real friend i've actually made since coming here has disappeared and i'm supposed to return home soon before...'-he thought as he came across a strange girl.
Not that there weren't plenty of strange people throughout the massive, mountain-sized city that was the Academy of course, but this one instantly gave him goose-bumps. His years of training here; in mind, body, and his senses, alerted him to be wary. He didn't know why, but he tensed all the same.
'That one is dangerous'-he thought as he passed by her, giving a polite nod of his head.
She gave no sign she'd seen him at all...
'Either she's in deep thought or ignoring me...bah, maybe i can help her and take my mind off my own troubles!'-with that thought, he turned back to her.
"Hello, are you perhaps lost miss? If you need some help finding something..."-he began when he realized she was gone.
'Did i imagine her then?'
Giving a shake of his shoulders, he continued on his way to, more or less, say good-bye to his favorite teachers.
'Hmmm, perhaps i should go see Camilla and leave a message for when/if Destin shows up? I bet he'd balk at the sight of my family home!'-Smiling, he turned and headed back the way he'd just come from.
...
Mahina used her Tribe's secret shadow technique to blend into the nearest shadow to avoid talking to the latest fool man that attempted to talk to her.
Odd. This one tensed upon seeing her but didn't speak until after he passed her by. No matter, she had a mission to complete after all.
She finally knew the name and location of the one she'd come for, Destin Yuudai-77th floor, North wing, room 39. The security for the archives and records was immense! She'd nearly been caught and they were likely searching for her though that wasn't much of a worry. They only knew someone broke into the records, who, would remain a mystery.
Masking herself as a man, albeit strangely dressed, she used Illusion magic to wander the Men's Dormitory without comment. After a time, she found the residence of her target.
With a smile, she knocked quickly before letting herself in.
"~Destin dear, i managed to sneak in to see you~"-She said as she entered since she couldn't mask her voice and maybe he'd be less on-guard if she said that. What she found was not a man, but a very angry maid...
"Who are you?"-Camilla asked as a man with a woman's voice entered, obviously using illusion magic of some sort. She did not sound like the girl Destin had been seeing regularly before his disappearance either...
"~Hello, is Destin here?~"-the man/girl said, looking around.
"What's your name?"-Camilla asked, still approaching the person.
"~Milana, do you know when Destin will return? It was such a bother to get in here after all~"- she said sweetly.
Camilla wasn't buying it, she still spoke in that too-sweet voice, not even sounding depressed or disappointed that Destin wasn't here.
'Assassin?'-Camilla started thinking as she stopped in front of her.
"Drop the act and state your business girl, no more games"-she said dangerously to the girl/woman, she didn't know what she looked like yet and couldn't put an age too her.
The 'man' shimmered and became a darkly beautiful woman. Her eyes were staring daggers at her though, and she looked like a Rashanener...
'!'
"State your purpose so i can decide what to do with you and no more lies either!"
'This maid gives me the chills, i must be wary of her...'
"My name is Mahina, i come from..."
A knock at the door made her pause, turning her head slightly. A muffled noise came from the other side.
-"Camilla, are you in there? It's Joakim, i was wondering if i could leave a message for Destin with you."-
"Well...Mahina, open the door but do not attempt to flee, i'd rather not kill you."-Camilla warned.
'Dangerous indeed, more than she seems...a bodyguard of some kind?'-Mahina thought as she turned to open the door and saw that odd man from earlier...
'Well this is unexpected'-Joakim thought and instantly went on guard. He'd been wary, though unsure why before. But now? No one but Camilla had ever answered...or should.
"Camilla, are you in there?!"-he half-shouted through the doorway to be heard over the general din of the noisy dormitory.
A quiet-ish "Yes!" came from inside. The girl in front of him did not look happy, but after looking behind her, motioned him to enter.
Slowly, he did so, keeping his eyes towards her middle. She might think him perverted or rude, but it was the best indicator of what she might do. People say to watch the eyes, but he'd learned to watch lower-towards the center of a person's being. You couldn't watch their stance very well if you stared them in the eyes...
"Camilla? Are you okay?"-he asked, then saw immediately after that she was, if not happy...not at all.
"I'm fine, but the real question is whether or not this trespasser will be..."-Camilla said with an edge to her voice.
'Okay, so this girl isn't someone she knows...'-Joakim thought, keeping up a loose-guard stance and closing the door behind him fully.
Zeflen:
Kalaraja was currently pacing back and forth in his tower. His 'business' was turning it's best profits in centuries thanks to the unofficial civil war in Maldred, if it could be called that with only the rich and powerful dying...besides some guards here and there of course.
The main reason for discomfort though was the recent disappearance of Destin Yuudai. He was in Rashanen somewhere...he knew that much. He was also sure that his enemies didn't have a clue either.
A dozen Acolytes had been sacrificed in the Summoning ritual in order to get through the barriers of the Magi Academy but they'd encountered a...'resistance' of some kind, like a weight had been tied down to...
"There must have been another within close proximity! It's the only explanation!"
His magic power flared for a moment, creating a miniature wind-storm, creating a mess around him.
It still didn't explain why he couldn't scry him now, now that the boy was outside the Academy. Even as a corpse, which the boy should most likely be by now, aught to be able to be seen, unless...unless he was taken captive into a Tribe.
Ignorant Rashanen barbarians! Their 'sacred ruins' held a wealth of knowledge and lost technology from ancient times. They made their homes in many of such ruins and nearly all had anti-divination stones within the area's, among other relics that made it difficult at best and suicidal at worst to scry those area's.
He'd have to send word to his agents there...
Upset with this latest blunder, maybe it was time to invade Ethos again and 'blow' off some steam...
His rival was likely too weak now to repel him anyway, though the magic defenses' of Ethos were not to be trifled with, as he knew very well from his last invasion a few centuries ago.
The chaos of Maldred funding a good portion of his own private army, backed by the nation's standing army, along with his power and his legions of Magi...perhaps now was the time to have some true entertainment once again.
Smirking, he wondered if his current rival would even live to meet him on the battlefield this time, although if he has....
