Chapter 29

Ajay stopped whatever he was going to say when he saw Diya happily devouring her meal. He gently smiled at her and started to eat.

After finishing their meal, Ajay asked Diya to take a stroll nearby. The sun was hidden behind the clouds and it was windy just like Diya liked so she happily agreed. She saw a few couples walking with their hands entangled, families happily talking on the benches, and groups of teenagers running around.

Ajay saw the way Diya's eyes lingered on the happy families for a little longer other than the others. "I always yearned for me and my family to be one of them, for my father and mother to interact with each other without starting to argue so my siblings and I can be happy for once that we are a family.".

She released a deep breath. " But every time we spent together ended up with us hating the word 'family'. Although my dad wasn't a good husband, he used to be a good father. But everything changed after he started having an affair.". Diya turned to see Ajay looking at her. She expected him to show disgust but his expression surprised her.

He had his usual poker face but his eyes were gentle. It looked like he was silently consoling her. "Aren't you disgusted by the fact that I'm a cheater's daughter?". Ajay shook his head without any hesitation. "You can't be blamed for your father's action." his face turned ugly when he thought of something.

"You've been called that before?". Diya nodded her head. "Yeah. But more than that phrase, that people being my best friend and boyfriend at that time, hurt me more.". Ajay ignored the urge to ask for their names as he didn't think that he'll be able to let this slide without making them regret hurting his wife. He didn't want to meddle in her past affairs without her knowledge.

He then saw a bookstore. He immediately showed it to Diya and watched as the familiar glow took over her face. He shouted "Be careful." and ran after her; crossing the road towards the bookstore.

Ajay saw Karl, Veer, and Diya laughing together in the kitchen when he went down from his room after taking a bath. "Bro! Can you please cook something? I'm very hungry.". Veer asked as soon as he saw Ajay walking into the kitchen. "No. I'm only cooking for me and Diya.". Veer made a pouty face and turned to Diya.

"Sister-in-law, did you see how badly I'm being treated by my own brother? This is how I'm suffering every day.". "Yes, yes. It's the same for me too.", Karl joined in with a sad face. Diya looked at their faces and turned to Ajay with a complicated look.

Ajay let out a sigh and said, "Okok, I'll cook. Don't disturb your sister-in-law.". Diya laughed at their happy faces and continued to chat and laugh with them. No one saw Ajay smiling while listening to their conversation as they were facing his back the whole time.
