She always made him wear clothes that she sewed, and basically throughout their childhood would say "With a brain like yours, all you can do is rely on your face and body." Although the phrase is ambiguous, she by no means advised him to climb up the ladder by sleeping around (she said once that Shadd was too stupid to even think of that). In fact, she encouraged him to become a model.

And he suited for the job. It's just that the profession of a model is short-lived. Moreover, there are lots of younger people applying for the job as well.

So, although Lint was officially a model, and actually got a contract with one of small scale shops, sooner or later he'd have to start another career.
