Anoi wasn't much surprised to find out that Lint is poor. Thinking about it, it all made sense. His looks are pretty decent, and if on top of that he had money, there'd be no problem to find a bride-volunteer. But if he has an empty wallet, that's a problem.
Just looks isn't enough.
Media tend to portray beauty as an undefeatable power. But, we don't think of the reason why good-looking peers are put on the throne. It's because the throne is imaginary. It doesn't really exist. They sit there because it's marketing. It's because that's the way the world spins.
In real life, most people won't go crazy over a nice-looking wrapping. In real world, even best candies have flaws, which books and movies tends to conveniently forget about.
We, human beings, don't want just a nice-looking candy. We're greedy.
We want the candy to have a 𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘩 taste.
Most importantly, Anoi sensed that Lint wasn't simply broke. No. To ask her – a person who had yet to form any sort of connection with him – to marry him, "the dude's desperate", as said Jackie. He probably already tried asking other girls. And, since he was still single, they all must have refused.
Anoi didn't think too hard about why they refused.
If he's poor, that's not a big problem.
But if he has debts…most will think twice before tying the knot.
Was refusing him being shallow? In Anoi's opinion: no.
Anoi didn't judge.
It was actually reasonable to refuse if your partner owes a big amount to someone. A young ambitious individual who had a whole life before them - what's the point in tying yourself down, to the partner, and to their debts?
You should run.
…
Maybe that was her being cynic.
Anoi wondered for a second if she still believed in love.
She decided she did not.
To get rejected, Lint must have been one of the three things.
First, a jerk.
"Well, there are girls who're into guys like that." Anoi thought.
Second, sick.
"He looks healthy."
And third, with big money problems.
The third was the most reasonable one. If he had money problems, then naturally girls won't ruin their future and wed him. Moreover, it even explained his motivation - love in exchange for money.
"Is he looking for a wealthy wife who can support him?" Anoi got shocked by her own thoughts.
Is that why he worked under That Woman? She was his sugar momma? That's the reason?
Anoi got irritated.
So, to conclude, The Woman wanted her dead. Gave him an order. And this piece of dog-bone listened to the orders and killed her, because he owed a big favor to his benefactor. And the freaking favor was giving him cash and keeping him as a toy boy??
To be honest, Anoi thought there was some deep scheme underneath. That, perhaps in the past, Lint was rescued by That Woman. She treated his life-threatening wounds and so he pledged his loyalty. He then fell in love with her. But, being a gentleman, he stood at the side, never overstepping his boundaries.
As much as she hated to admit, Jackie's non-stop rattling about romance, influenced her thinking sometimes. She hoped her death had a more romantic, epic background to it.
But… a gigolo...
Anoi absentmindedly stomped towards the center of the park.
"It's okay. Then, all I have to do is give him money, and he'll be converted into my follower. That's not too bad."
She still didn't understand why he proposed to her, since she wasn't a big shot or anything.
"Maybe I have the aura of a person rolling in dough."
She reached the center and looked around, trying to see any talented students.
"A sugar momma… If that's a thing I must be to stay alive… This role. I take it."
