Pang Degong chuckled softly. "A contest of ambition and strategy, is it not? Lie Fan and Cao Cao are like two tigers on a mountain, each waiting for the other to make a misstep. But there is another factor to consider, the other warlords. Sun Ce in the south is expanding steadily, and while Liu Bei's current power is modest, his reputation for righteousness could make him a wildcard."

The three men fell silent for a moment, the weight of their discussion settling over them. The flickering light of the lantern cast shadows that danced across their thoughtful faces.

Huang Chengyan broke the silence. "And what of the people? In the end, it is they who suffer most in this chaos. Whoever seeks to unify the land must do so not for personal glory but for the greater good. That is why Zhuge Liang's choice will be critical. His wisdom and principles will guide him to the right cause."

Sima Hui nodded in agreement. "Kongming's understanding of governance and his ability to inspire others will make him an invaluable asset to whomever he chooses to serve. But I wonder, will he truly choose Lie Fan while he had interest in , whose strength and strategy seem unmatched? Or will he align with Liu Bei, whose ideals mirror his own principle he held?"

Pang Degong leaned back, a faint smile playing on his lips. "That is a question only Kongming can answer. But knowing him, his decision will not be based on power alone. He will weigh every factor carefully, considering not just the present but the future."

Sima Hui and Huang Chengyan nodded in unison, their agreement with Pang Degong's observation evident. They knew Zhuge Liang well enough to understand that his decisions would be meticulously calculated, guided by both principle and foresight. The conversation then turned lighter, a welcome reprieve from the weighty matters of war and strategy that had dominated their discussions.

Huang Chengyan sighed, his expression shifting to one of mild exasperation. "Speaking of choices, my daughter Huang Yueying leaves me with none but headaches. She's fourteen now, yet rather than learning the arts or social graces like other girls her age, she's always out tinkering with gadgets and contraptions, her hands perpetually covered in grease."

Pang Degong chuckled, his eyes twinkling with amusement. "A daughter after her father's heart, I'd say. Perhaps she'll invent something revolutionary while the rest of us toil with our scrolls."

Sima Hui laughed softly, joining in the teasing. "Chengyan, you should be proud. Yueying may not be the conventional young lady, but her mind is a treasure. I daresay she'll surpass even her father in ingenuity."

Huang Chengyan shook his head, though a faint smile betrayed his pride. "You both jest, but the truth is she's stubborn. Just last week, she built some odd contraption to 'improve irrigation' and ended up flooding the courtyard."

Their laughter filled the room, the mood light and companionable. For a moment, the pressing concerns of the outside world felt distant, as if the weight of chaos and war had lifted, leaving only the warmth of old friendships.

The tranquility was abruptly interrupted by a sharp knock at the door. The sound startled them, their laughter fading as Sima Hui rose to his feet, a crease of concern forming on his brow.

"Who comes at this hour?" he called, his voice steady but wary.

There was a brief pause before a calm voice answered from the other side. "Master Sima Hui, we mean no harm. We come in peace, bearing an invitation."

Sima Hui's hand hovered near the door, his instincts urging caution. Slowly, he opened it to reveal two figures standing in the dim light, dressed entirely in black. Their faces were obscured by straw hats with veils, and their posture was non-threatening yet deliberate. The sight immediately put him on edge.

"An invitation, you say?" Sima Hui's tone was measured, though his guard was up. "And who are you, to bring such a thing to this secluded place?"

One of the figures inclined his head slightly. "We are mere messengers, sent to deliver this request to you and your esteemed companions. Please, do not be alarmed. We harbor no ill intent."

Sima Hui studied them for a moment, his mind racing. He knew what this likely meant, one of the warlords had discovered their remote village and sought to enlist their wisdom, or perhaps even their allegiance.

Such invitations were rarely straightforward and often carried veiled threats. Yet, it would be unwise to refuse outright without first understanding the nature of their visit.

After a moment, he stepped aside. "Very well. Enter, and state your purpose."

The two figures stepped inside, their movements careful and unhurried. Sima Hui gestured toward a modest seating area but excused himself briefly, leaving the room to inform Huang Chengyan and Pang Degong.

"They claim to be messengers," Sima Hui said as he entered the adjacent chamber where his friends waited. "Dressed in black, faces hidden. I suspect they've come from one of the warlords, likely with some proposition."

Huang Chengyan frowned, setting his tea down. "So, the chaos of the world has finally reached even here. It was only a matter of time, I suppose. Let us see what they want."

Pang Degong rose, his expression calm but curious. "If nothing else, we'll learn who among the warlords has the audacity or the foresight to seek us out."

Together, the three men returned to the main room, their demeanor composed but watchful. Sima Hui addressed the veiled figures first.

"You've traveled far to find us," he began, his voice steady. "Speak plainly. What is it you seek, and who sent you?"

One of the figures reached into his robes and produced a sealed letter, setting it carefully on the table. "This is a formal request from our lord, Lie Fan. He has heard of your wisdom and the teachings of this place. He humbly seeks your guidance and extends an invitation for you to join him."

At the mention of Lie Fan's name, the three men exchanged subtle glances. It was not entirely unexpected, Lie Fan's growing domain made him a likely candidate to reach out to those who could offer strategic or intellectual support. Still, the directness of the approach was noteworthy.

Huang Chengyan broke the silence. "Lie Fan, the rising dragon of the north. He has shown remarkable ability in both war and governance. Yet, one must wonder—what does he truly seek from us?"

The second messenger spoke then, his tone respectful but firm. "Our lord understands the value of wisdom in these turbulent times. He does not seek to command, but to learn and to strengthen his vision of unity and order. He believes that with your guidance, the path to peace can be made clearer."

Pang Degong leaned forward slightly, his gaze sharp. "And if we refuse this invitation? What then?"

The first messenger responded without hesitation. "Our lord respects the autonomy of all scholars and sages. He would accept your refusal with grace, though he would be disappointed. He has instructed us to extend his invitation and nothing more."

The honesty of the reply seemed to ease some of the tension in the room. Sima Hui nodded thoughtfully, picking up the sealed letter. He examined the wax seal, noting the emblem of Lie Fan's domain, but did not open it just yet.

"We will consider this carefully," Sima Hui said at last. "You may rest here tonight before your journey back."

The messengers bowed deeply, expressing their gratitude before stepping aside to allow the three men to confer privately.

Back in the adjacent room, Sima Hui placed the letter on the table. "Lie Fan has made his move. It seems he wishes to consolidate not just land and armies, but wisdom as well."

Huang Chengyan stroked his beard, his expression pensive. "An intelligent strategy. If he continuously surround himself with capable advisors as he had done, his dominance will only grow. Yet, we must be cautious. Aligning ourselves with any warlord is a weighty decision."

Pang Degong nodded. "Agreed. Lie Fan has shown himself to be pragmatic and forward-thinking, but power can change even the noblest of men. We should not take his words or his invitation at face value."

The three men deliberated late into the night, weighing the implications of the invitation. While they recognized Lie Fan's potential, they also understood the risks of becoming entangled in the ambitions of any single warlord.

Meanwhile, back at their shared hut, Zhuge Liang, Xu Shu, and Pang Tong sat around a small table, the glow of a single oil lamp casting warm light over their faces. The atmosphere was relaxed yet tinged with the excitement of the day's events.

Pang Tong leaned forward, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "So, Kongming, are you finally going to reveal what the test was like? Or are you going to keep us in suspense like the masters did?"

Zhuge Liang chuckled softly, shaking his head. "Patience, Brother Shiyuan. You'll find out soon enough when it's your turn. Suffice it to say, it was rigorous but fair. The masters know how to challenge one's mind and character."

Xu Shu smiled knowingly. "I expected no less. If anyone could rise to the occasion, it's you, Kongming. Still, passing with flying colors, that's no small feat."

Zhuge Liang's expression turned thoughtful. "The test was not merely about knowledge or skill. It was a reminder of the responsibility that comes with power and the importance of serving the greater good. The land is in chaos, and those who seek to lead must do so with wisdom and integrity."

Pang Tong leaned back, crossing his arms. "And here you go again, speaking like a sage. Still, I admire your resolve. Three months, you said? That gives us some time to prepare ourselves as well."

Xu Shu nodded. "Indeed. The path ahead will be challenging for all of us, but I have no doubt we'll each find our way."

After their conversation, Zhuge Liang, Pang Tong, and Xu Shu retired to their respective rooms, the weight of their day slowly giving way to rest. They had no inkling of the serious deliberations taking place among their masters.

For the younger generation, the world was still a realm of possibilities, where the idealism of youth could conquer the pragmatism of reality. Yet, for Sima Hui, Huang Chengyan, and Pang Degong, the stakes were far higher.

Back on Sima Hui's but, as the flickering lanterns cast long shadows across the room, the three elder scholars sat in solemn silence, each lost in thought. The sealed letter from Lie Fan rested on the table between them, an innocuous piece of parchment carrying the weight of uncertainty and potential peril.
