As the couple bowed to heaven and earth, their parents, and finally to each other, the atmosphere was charged with high emotion that shrouded everyone. The cheers that erupted when the rites were completed echoed across the residence and into the streets beyond, and the groom and bride looked at each other with happy smiles.
The banquet that followed was a grand affair, with tables laden with exquisite dishes and wine flowing freely. Performers entertained the guests with music, dance, and acrobatics, creating an atmosphere of festivity and celebration.
Wannian was escorted to the marriage chamber by her handmaidens, and as tradition, she would wait in the chamber until Sima Yi as the groom entered the chamber, and they would have their first night as a pair of husband and wife.
The banquet hall buzzed with lively conversations, the clinking of cups, and bursts of laughter as the grand wedding feast continued in full swing. The atmosphere was warm and jubilant, with guests enjoying the meticulously prepared dishes and entertainment.
Lie Fan sat at the head of the main table, his presence commanding respect as he shared drinks and exchanged words with the dignitaries, generals, and advisors seated around him. Beside him sat Sima Lang, who acted as the elder for his younger brother, Sima Yi, in this significant event.
Meanwhile, Sima Yi moved around the hall with poise, greeting and thanking the guests for their well wishes. Despite his composed demeanor, the glimmer of happiness in his eyes betrayed his excitement. He paused occasionally to accept toasts from the attendees, ensuring to maintain a respectful yet controlled pace so as not to overindulge.
When he finally arrived at the table where Zhuge Liang, Lu Xun, Pang Tong, and Xu Shu sat, his demeanor shifted slightly, softening as he regarded his closest friends. They all rose in unison, their faces lit with genuine happiness for their friend.
Zhuge Liang, ever the composed scholar, lifted his cup first. "To my dear friend Zhongda, who has found not only a partner in life but also a woman of exceptional grace and character. May this union bring you both wisdom, happiness, and unshakable strength."
The others raised their cups in agreement, echoing the sentiment. "To Sima Yi and Lady Wannian!"
Sima Yi nodded deeply, his gratitude evident in his expression. "Thank you, my friends. Your words mean more to me than you know. And Kongming, as always, you manage to elevate every moment with your eloquence."
Lu Xun stepped forward next, his youthful exuberance shining through. "Brother Zhongda, you have achieved what many can only dream of, a love that is as profound as it is enduring. But remember, marriage is not just a union of two people but the forging of a partnership that will face life's battles together. We are all here to support you."
He then smiled mischievously and gestured to the other three. "However, as much as we wish you the best, we won't let you drink four cups of wine at once. You've got many more toasts to go, and we wouldn't want you to pass out before the night ends!"
Pang Tong chuckled, his rough yet jovial voice cutting through the noise. "Indeed, it would be a tragedy if the groom ended up under the table before he even reached the bridal chamber!"
Xu Shu added with a grin, "So, one toast is all we will demand of you here. Save your strength, Zhongda, for tonight and for the days ahead."
The table erupted in laughter, and Sima Yi joined in, raising his cup with a nod. "Your wisdom and friendship have always been my greatest treasures. One toast it shall be, but I assure you, this cup holds my gratitude for each of you."
With that, he drank deeply, savoring the moment with his dearest and new friends. They clinked cups once more, their bond strengthened by shared history and mutual respect.
As Sima Yi moved on to greet more guests, the lively banquet continued, with music, dance, and the clamor of joy filling the hall. Lie Fan observed it all from his seat, his heart swelling with pride.
It wasn't just his sister's wedding that brought him joy, it was the unity of his clan and the Sima Clan, also that finally Sima Yi truly entered into his bandwagon and would never betray him.
Meanwhile, in the marriage chamber, Wannian sat in silence, her posture straight and her expression serene, though her heart raced with anticipation. The room was adorned with red silks and glowing lanterns, creating an intimate and warm atmosphere. Her handmaidens had fussed over every detail before leaving her to await her husband's arrival.
She gazed at the flickering candlelight, her thoughts drifting to the earlier events of the day. The ceremonies, the blessings, the smiles of her family, they all felt like a dream. Yet here she was, on the cusp of beginning a new chapter with Sima Yi.
The sound of the chamber door opening pulled her from her reverie. She turned to see Sima Yi stepping inside, his movements careful and deliberate. He had shed the outer layers of his wedding attire but still looked every bit the dignified groom.
His eyes softened as they met hers, and he closed the door behind him, the noise from the banquet fading into a distant hum.
"Have you been waiting long?" he asked gently, his voice steady but filled with warmth.
Wannian shook her head, a shy smile gracing her lips. "Not at all. The time passed quickly, thinking of…everything."
Sima Yi stepped closer, his gaze never leaving hers. "Today has been overwhelming, hasn't it? But now, it's just us. No rituals, no audience. Just you and me."
His words eased the tension she didn't realize she had been holding. She nodded, her smile growing more confident. "Yes, just us."
They sat together, the air between them filled with a quiet intimacy. Sima Yi reached out, taking her hand in his. His touch was firm yet gentle, grounding her in the moment.
"You were breathtaking today," he said, his tone sincere. "I've always known you to be strong and kind, but seeing you today…you embodied grace itself. I am honored to call you my wife."
Wannian felt her cheeks warm at his words. "And I am honored to call you my husband. You have always been steadfast and wise, Sima Yi. I hope to match your strength and be a partner you can rely on."
He smiled, a rare, unguarded expression that lit up his face. "Together, we will face whatever comes our way. I promise to protect you, to cherish you, and to stand by your side, no matter the challenges."
The flickering candlelight seemed to dance in agreement as the two exchanged their heartfelt vows, unspoken yet deeply understood. They sat together for a while longer, sharing quiet conversation and laughter, their bond deepening with each passing moment.
As the night grew late, the sounds of the banquet outside gradually subsided, leaving the world quiet and still. In the privacy of the chamber, Sima Yi and Wannian began their journey as husband and wife, their hearts full of hope for the future.
On the other hand, on the bustling streets of Xiapi, the lively energy of the wedding festivities continued into the night. The vibrant lanterns illuminated the thoroughfares, their warm glow mingling with the hum of laughter and music from street performers.
The night market was alive with vendors offering delicacies, handcrafted trinkets, and festive ornaments. Amidst this backdrop, Zhuge Liang, Lu Xun, Pang Tong, and Xu Shu strolled together, enjoying the crisp night breeze.
Lu Xun, newly acquainted with Pang Tong and Xu Shu, found their company intriguing. As they walked, he engaged them in animated conversation, his natural curiosity and sharp intellect driving their discussions. "Brother Shiyuan, I've heard that you have the nickname 'The Fledgling Phoenix.' It's clear why. Your insights tonight at the banquet were profound," Lu Xun said with a smile. "And Brother Yuanzhi, your reputation precedes you as well. I'd love to hear more about your philosophies on governance and military strategy."
Pang Tong chuckled, his slightly disheveled appearance contrasting with his sharp mind. "You flatter me, Boyan. But tell me, what's your approach to balancing intellectual pursuits with the practical demands of leadership? I've heard you've already achieved much for one younger than us in Lujiang."
Xu Shu added, "Indeed, I'd like to hear your thoughts as well. You seem to blend the idealism of youth with a practical understanding of the world, a rare combination."
Lu Xun grinned. "Ah, you're both too kind. My approach is simple, learn from everyone and adapt swiftly. But tell me, how do you view the current state of affairs under Lord Lie Fan's leadership? I've heard nothing but admiration for his governance."
As the three men exchanged thoughts on philosophy, governance, and the future of Xiapi, Zhuge Liang walked slightly ahead, his usual calm demeanor more introspective than usual. He remained silent, his fan moving rhythmically in his hand as though it were keeping time with his thoughts.
Noticing Zhuge Liang's quietness, Lu Xun turned toward him. "Brother Kongming, you've been unusually silent tonight. Normally, your insights would elevate our discussion. What occupies your mind so deeply?"
Zhuge Liang slowed his pace, his serene expression unchanged as he glanced at Lu Xun. A small, thoughtful smile played on his lips. "Ah, Boyan, forgive my silence. My mind has indeed been preoccupied. The festivities, the marriage, and the joyous atmosphere, they've provided much food for thought."
Lu Xun tilted his head, curiosity evident in his eyes. "And what thoughts might those be, if you don't mind sharing?"
Zhuge Liang stopped walking and turned to face the group, his gaze calm yet piercing. "I've been reflecting on the question that has lingered in my heart for some time, whether it is time to pledge my full loyalty to Lord Lie Fan. And not just for myself, but whether my master should also align his vision with that of one that Lord Lie Fan have."
Pang Tong and Xu Shu exchanged glances, their expressions showing they understood the weight of Zhuge Liang's words. They had all wrestled with similar questions since joining Lie Fan's circle. Xu Shu spoke first, his tone measured. "Kongming, you've always been deliberate in your decisions. What leads you to believe now is the time?"
Zhuge Liang nodded, his fan pausing mid-sway. "The marriage today was more than a familial union. It was a statement. Lord Lie Fan continues to strengthen his position by forging alliances not just through military might but through bonds of trust and loyalty. Xiapi and his domain are thriving under his leadership. The people are content, his advisors are respected, and his ambitions, though great, are tempered by a sense of responsibility."
