Following the tracks

"Yes, Grandma!" Kathy said while shoving the pancakes in her mouth. She thought of herself as an extremely lucky person for having the grandparents that she had. Who said that today she couldn't be lucky?

The nightmare slowly creeped up in her mind. Kathy batted away any negative thoughts. She was gonna go to that school confidently, so she grabbed her coat and backpack then raced out the door.

Kathy and Tim needed to go to the bus stop which was further along the trail they had used to get to the house. It was really only a ten to fifteen minute walk.

The sun was still rising and the sky was a grayish color. Small delicate snowflakes fell on their faces then slowly melted away.

The two siblings hadn't talked since last night and it made the fifteen minute walk feel very uncomfortable for Kathy.

"Look Tim, I'm sorry for what I said about you being an attention hog and all.." Her sentence trailed off as she was trying to find more to say.

"Yea I know." He paused for a second. "It just started feeling to lonely without mother and father.. so I assumed if I could get enough attention it wouldn't feel so lonely."

"We'll just try sticking together more and fight through this with each other." Kathy realized that was what she had wanted in the beginning and finally being able to voice her thought out made her happy. Maybe they'll team up to fight together instead of constantly fighting each other. Of course she knew sibling relationships were never perfect but it was one step closer to allies.

"Mm." It was Tim's noise of agreement. "Also I'm sorry about trying to trick ya, I know you're not little anymore.. Though the story is quite popular around here."

"Haha, you had your fun when I was little!" The happy atmosphere that now surrounded them seemed to have welcomed the sun. They could now see the bus stop approaching.

They had arrived just on time and boarded the noisy bus. Kathy and Tim sat next to each other feeling like they were on the same team to fight the awkwardness of being the new kid.

The high school wasn't very large because it was a relatively small town. Just great Kathy thought. Everyone would most definitely know each other and have tight unbreakable bonds with their groups. This scared her, when she was in her old school, her group was always anxious about letting new kids join them. Who knows, one of those kids could be dealing with drugs or murder! Kathy didn't really believe that but it was safe to assume anyone but the people you knew well could be horrible people! That was a point of view parents drilled in your head called stranger danger.

Kathy became very worried as she walked toward the office to grab a schedule. What if she got placed into classes with the annoying popular people? What if she didn't know the material? What if she couldn't find a table to sit at for lunch!? "What happened to your positive outlook for the day?" Came a small mocking voice inside her head. Screw that! School sucks and there is no amount of positivity to last an entire day! Though Kathy did listen to that little voice, she did have her brother and could sit with him if she needed to, they were an alliance now.

A teacher had led them down the halls after they were given their schedules. Kathy saw some small notes along with a poster that caught her eye as the strolled down the hall. She only got a glimpse of the lettering but it said "Mystery of the Woods." She was going to check it out later.

Tim saw his sister looked a bit distracted, "You okay?" They were a team now he needed to know if his sister would be okay.

"What? Oh I'm fine, just saw something." Kathy said a bit frantic. She really didn't want to trouble him over such a small matter.

When they felt that they finally understood the layout of the building they headed towards there classes. Kathy had language arts first, which lucky for her was a class she knew well and the time flew by.

Lunch time came around and she hadn't said hi to anyone! Kathy felt that it would be weird if she just sat at someone's table without them or her knowing each other. Luckily she had her brother. Kathy scanned the lunch room but to her surprise he wasn't anywhere in sight!

Kathy gripped her lunch pail tightly and stormed out the cafeteria. She went out in the hall and headed towards the poster she saw. What else was she going to do? Stand in the cafeteria akwardlly and make a fool of herself? Nuh uh! Kathy felt slightly betrayed by her brother, he was supposed to be there for her but he could've also been using the bathroom at that time so she couldn't really blame him.

She stopped by the poster that originally caught her eye and took some time reading it's contents. "Mystery of the Woods, strange things happen in our town although no one wants to admit it. Our club is looking to hear your stories!"

Great, a club. It was one of the best known ways for getting close to people. Kathy felt that this was her chance to get some friends! I mean maybe they could tell me what my dream ment, or if what happened was real! Kathy thought about this, though she didn't think these people could actually help her in anyway, it did give her an excuse to budge into their little group. She would probably be labeled as a weirdo by other students for joining the club but anything was better than being labeled a loner.

She was going to figure out what this club was all about.
