Ocean

The ocean's surface is affected by what's underneath. If there's a massive chasm, the gravity in that area ends up being slightly weaker (due to there being less mass). This causes the ocean to slightly bump upwards in that area.

By studying the surface of the ocean, you can thus roughly determine how it might look at the bottom.
