Bumpers

Cars used to have bumpers that were actually bumpers. You'd be able to bump solid objects, such as walls and other car whilst only sustaining minor damages.

The reason they aren't used anymore, is that it's significantly safer for the passengers if a car can properly compress when hit. The compression helps mitigate the incoming force, heavily reducing the odds of a fatal car accident.
