After the tests earlier, they sent us back, telling us that they have to analyze the data before coming up with the results for our individual "training". When we got out Charles and the others were gone and Lennox though on the other hand waited.
"They had errands to tend to but they asked me to escort you back to your dorms. How was the tests?" at least Lennox had the emotions the other three lacked, though I understand that being raised as an assassin kinda does that to you.
"It was fine, weird but it went fine without complications." I assured, he nodded awkwardly scratching the back of his neck.
"So, about the medicine…" he trailed off. I already knew what he was about to say. "You still have to take it once a day. Sorry." he was adorably apologetic. What a breath of fresh air.
Sighing I said, "We know. We already agreed that whatever it is that will make this a bit easier, we're prepared to do it. All we ask is you allow us to take our time to adjust, and not bombard us with everything at once and expects us to get over it at once. Deal?" we made an agreement that since we're already here and we should be thankful that they kept us from being guinea pigs or killed, we should just cooperate. We've got nothing left to loose more than we already have.
"I'll tell them. It's a deal." he gave a genuine smile. We all walked back to the dorms and agreed to stop by at Ethan's room. Lennox left saying he also had errands to attend to.
"So, would anyone like to share exactly it is that they saw?" I asked. After getting tested one by one each of us relived a past we didn't even know existed. "It felt like I was a spectator inside my own body. The words that came out of my mouth, the movements my body made, I had no control over any of it. It was like sleep paralysis but this time you're awake but you can't control what you're doing." I explained.
"I couldn't have said it any better." replied Ethan. We all nodded in agreement. We now sat in a circle once again in Ethan's room, it's becoming a thing. "I mean the sensation of actually being there was just amazing. I've been working in Core Tech and never have I encountered science in this calibre. The process is simple but the results are astounding." we laughed at how geeky Ethan sounded, like he was sharing about a new toy. "It's true!" he defended.
"Well I have to agree, it was so surreal. At first I was confused, I tried talking but my mouth wouldn't move and I tried to move away from the scene but my body refused. But, at that one moment when I was using my powers, it felt so natural. Like I'm used to doing it, like I've been doing it for years." added Ange. Staring down at her hands and then holding Thea's hand in her's. I smile every time I witness their display of affection, like a sister complex. Funny I know.
Thea shook her head, "I can't believe that all these years the therapy about the dreams and the visions were useless, because at the end of the day, they were a part of me all along that no amount of therapeutic consultations can fix. Having dreamed of deaths, accidents and not knowing they actually happened kind of scares me." she leaned her head on Ange's shoulder, while Ange caressed it softly, comforting her.
I nodded, "Didn't the files say that both of you are interconnected with each other, like psychic twins?" I asked.
"Well, technically it says that our abilities are connected with each other but it doesn't specify how exactly and in what way. I have visions of the future, though it's suggestive, and Thea have dreams of the past. But we don't have any control to what future or past we see, it just happens at random like dreams." Ange explained. Someone did their studying.
"Well, if that scares you then you might think twice about my abilities. Historia Scientia? Basically I'm like super smart and all that but Telekinesis? I studied how brain waves can make that possible and I've seen it but lifting an armored car with ease? Now that is scary." Ley was never the outgoing one between us, she always kept to her comfort zone and it's true that she is incredibly smart but she struggled despite that. She's supposed to be studying as a medical student right now, and I'm supposed to be writing a manuscript. We're so far off our course.
"I have something I've been curious about since we got here. Aren't we supposedly reported missing by now? We left our homes, jobs and schools abruptly with no explanation. What about the people we know? Are we supposed to just, forget about them?" they were quiet, neither one knew the answer. "It's hard to just suddenly be pulled away from your reality and squeezed in to a new one."
They looked at me as I continued, "I believe that we could get through no matter what the obstacle ahead. I'm not at all regretful for the past few days, on the contrary, I'm grateful for finally knowing the truth of my life. I may not know that my whole existence was a lie but I felt that something was missing, and every time I felt that, there was this buzz at the back of my mind confirming that. And now, we have our answers, maybe not all but it's more than what we've actually been missing all our lives."
I looked at each of their faces, two best friends close enough to be sisters, a boy too smart for his own good, and a girl who had her life goals erased and taken from her, "We had lives, jobs, but all of that was a lie. Something that was predisposed for us because of our abilities, but if you all agree, how about we find out our true purpose? New goals?"
I don't expect them to agree, we worked so hard for the careers we had, for the lives we lived then suddenly finding out it was like an instinctive mechanism for us, and this is where we should be, "I'm in." Ethan was the first to say agree, "I mean, my job at the Core Tech was basically computer engineering, but this here is much cooler. And I don't have much friends either." he looked funny shyly scratching the back of his head.
"Me too." said Thea confidently, "I did work hard to become an artist but I won't let that define who I am. I may be an artist but I'm also allowing myself to grow from that, and evolving into someone who I'm born to be." I smiled. We are all allowed to become a better version of ourselves, though different in terms of our situation but it's still better than living a life of lies.
"If Thea's in then so am I." added Ange. I knew they were like peas in a pod, wherever one goes, the other follows not too far behind.
I glanced at Ley, waiting for her answer. I held her hand and squeezed it, "I know that you're scared right now, I mean I can render a grown elephant unconscious if I wanted to," I grimaced just thinking about it, "and I think that's a pretty terrifying ability as well. What if I accidentally shattered someone's consciousness and they won't wake up? You have a gift, imagine not having to stand up to grab the remote or walk towards the fridge to grab a soda?" I joked. She needs to know that she's not alone, "And the point is to train how to control it and use it for good. Remember that." I urged her further.
After a second she started laughing, "Not having to stand up from a comfortable position on the couch to grab a drink would is tempting. I'm in." I sighed in relief. I grabbed her and hugged her tightly, caressing her head before whispering, "I'm with you all the way." we pulled away.
Clasping my hands together, "There we have it. We've already passed the worse to be honest, I don't think there's anything left that can surprise me anymore." I laughed, "In the course of a few days, I was kidnapped basically, almost murdered in my own home, shot at during a high speed chase and finding out I have powers. Literally nothing can surprise me anymore." and we all laughed. This is much better than dreading our every waking moment from facts that are highly impossible.
We continued to joke around when someone knocked on the door, I stood up to open the door, and Charles stood there his arms crossed across his chest, "Can I help you?" I asked.
He cleared his throat, "I heard from Dr. Sutton about the tests earlier, how are you all coping?" did he just ask that?
"Uhh, we're fine. How about those errands? What happened to "If you have anything you need, we're right outside."? By the way, when's the actual training? Tomorrow?" I'm done cowering in doubt, suspicion and uncertainty, this time I'm initiating and facing this head on.
Charles looked confused, skeptical whether I was being sarcastic or serious, "We're still waiting for the results from Dr. Sutton and we'll inform you tomorrow. New uniforms were placed inside your rooms, and also clothes and all the necessities you all need. If there's anything else you need just ask. You should rest, we have a long day tomorrow." not waiting for my reply, he turned around and then left. That was the first decent conversation we've had since meeting.
"Well, I suppose it's time to hit the hay folks." I turned towards them urging for them to go back to their rooms. Cleaning up the blankets on the floor, we bid each other goodnight and left for each of our rooms. "Goodnight." I said to Ethan before walking to my room.
Taking the keycard from my pocket I swiped it and entered. On the table was an assortment of clothes like socks, shirts, sweatpants, and wouldn't you know it, underwear. My size too. Shaking my head I put it back down and looked through the other things like soap, shampoo, conditioner, and when he said necessities, he didn't waste no effort. "Thanks I guess." I said out loud. I removed the combat boots from my aching feet and sat down on my bed.
I stared down at my wrists, rubbing the bandage covering the wound where the needles were inserted, "This is never gets easy huh?" I asked myself loudly.
"It never does." I stood upright to the voice that spoke. Charles stood by the door, leaning against the threshold. "I just went to check if the uhh, necessities are sufficient." I doubt that that's the only reason why he's standing there like a creep.
"You could knock you know. And if you mean if I have any lack of toiletries, underwear and socks then the answer is no. That," I pointed to the stack of clothes and bathroom essentials on the table, "Is more than enough, thank you." I walked closer to him so he won't look all awkward standing by the door.
He stood straighter and crossed his arms, "Close your door if you don't want people barging in. Expect a lot of difference to your life from now on, because it never does get easy." it's the second time we're having a conversation without bickering and rude remarks attached.
Dr. Sutton's words came to mind and I asked without hesitation, "I heard from doc that you were once assassins, is that true?" he looked taken aback. If it is true, then I have someone to sympathize with. Being raised to become something other people expected us to be. Having no control with our lives and following orders we disagree with.
His face went cold and he cleared his throat, looking straight at me with those eyes sent chills down my spine. "You're not the only ones trying to get over a past life." he stated. So it's true, "At least you hardly remember any of it, but for us who remained and we're saved too late, the damage has already been done." and by damage he means…
"The way we were raised weren't as careful and important as compared to when you were being tested." I felt sudden guilt, I didn't know. "So if you think you had it rough, imagine a life where you're forced to pull the trigger on someone you were ordered to kill just because those people didn't exactly agree with you. Imagine seeing their face every time you close your eyes." he looked like he was in pain. I opened up something that was sensitive and it was insensitive of me.
He leaned closer making me step back a little, and he continued to approach me slowly until we were slowly entering my room, "What are you doing?" I asked hesitantly. I continued to back away until my back hit the wall. "Stop it."
He put his hand on the side of my head, trapping me with his body, "All the people I killed had the same look in their eyes as they begged for their life. I realized that once you're on the verge of death, your true colors come out, bribing, cursing, then begging." is he threatening me? I glared at him. "What would you do?" he's definitely trying to scare me right now.
I scoffed, "You know, dying isn't something that scares me right now. Being turned into a lab rat is, can you imagine having crazy scientists poke at you just because you're different?" I sneered, looking up at him, "Trying to see what the hell it is that's wrong with you. So no, I won't beg for my life. If anything, I'll even let them. Death would be much more merciful and pleasant. I witnessed it no matter how short it may be, to follow orders we don't agree with." I laughed sarcastically.
"I've experienced that once again today. That despite the fact of ou telling us you won't force us into anything and yet meaning the exact opposite of that." I crossed my arms too. "Listening to these adults who thinks they know everything." I glared at him, "So, are you, are you gonna kill me?" his face was so close his nose almost touched my forehead.
He backed away and shook his head then started laughing, "You're interesting, most people would've said something entirely different." he stood straight and put his hands inside his pocket, "Like I said back at your apartment, if I wanted you dead I would've killed you already. Besides, you're no good dead to anyone, and I promised I'll take care of you and I meant it. Have a good sleep, tomorrow more hell will begin." then he turned and walked away, closing the door behind him.
I sighed and exhaled the breath I didn't realize I was holding, "That was close." my heart pumped fast in my chest, I felt my cheeks were flushed. "I need a bath." tomorrow huh? Another day another hell to experience. I forgot to ask him about our probable disappearance already hitting the news. I shrugged, "I'll ask him tomorrow, yeah that's right, tomorrow."
