Chapter 4

It's been 5 days since I escaped. On the second day I was able to take the first real shower in 4 years. It was also the first time I was able to look in a mirror.

I didn't recognize the girl that was staring back at me. I saw a small frail girl. She had long unruly brown hair filled with sticks and leaves from her time in the woods. Her green eyes were dull, sunken and red from crying. She looked sick and exhausted. Her stomach huge. She looked like she had an exercise ball under her hospital gown. I hated her.

Day three was the day the police officer came back to ask me some more questions. I also for the life of me could not remember who my family was. All I could remember was the accident up until now.

She brought a sketch artist like she said she would. I talked to him for an hour as I described my captor. At the end it was as if I was looking my attacker in the eyes. It sent shivers down my spine.

The baby was fine. Yesterday they took me to a doctor that put this cold gel on my stomach and then rubbed this probe on it. On the monitor was a grainy black and white video. They called it an ultra sound. Apparently that thing on the monitor was my baby.

Every night I had nightmares. And last night was no exception. The same blue eyes and sadistic smile that haunted me when I was awake also haunted me in my dreams. Blue eyes that were cold and void of any emotion. My pain was his pleasure and his pleasure was my ruining.

Today I watched a show I've never seen before. It was about step siblings who had to keep the fact that their dog could talk a secret from everyone including their parents. The siblings had just found out that their dog's puppies can also talk when Johanna came back, this time with company.

She walked in with a woman in tow. She looked to be in her late thirties. She was tall with olive skin, short dark brown hair and eyes that matched. She was dressed in jeans, sandals and a shimmery purple tank top. A black handbag hung from her shoulder. The longer I looked at her the more familiar she seemed.

A memory played in my head. It was fuzzy but bits and pieces were clear. Laying on the hard gravel. Pain. Hunger. Two bright lights coming towards me. The sound of a car door. Rushed footsteps. Then a face slowly coming into view. Their mouth was moving but I couldn't hear what they were saying. Then nothing.

The woman was her. She saved me.

"Rebel, this is Mai Adames. She's the one that brought you here," the police officer said slowly as if she was trying to calm down a bull. "Do you remember?"

I nodded.

"Good. She has volunteered to be your legal guardian."

"What is that?"

"It means you can stay with me until you turn 18." This time when Mai spoke I could hear her voice. She looked so... hopeful.

"It also means that Mai will have the legal authority to care for your personal and property interests. She has all the legal rights that a birth parent will have. Then when you turn 18 you'll be a legal adult." Johanna explained further. "Also I'll be visiting regularly to make sure you are okay."

"Do I have a choice?"

Mai's face fell.

"The only other option would be emancipation. Since you are 16, you could try to get it court ordered but since you're still recovering from your extensive injuries and you're pregnant, I doubt that any judge would order it since you don't have the means to fully support yourself."

I swallowed. Defeated I asked, "When do I leave?"
