Relatable: A play script
SOPHIA
Can you believe we're getting married in Spring?"
AUGUST
"We could get married sooner."
SOPHIA
"You know we can't. It's my last year of highschool, and mother won't pay for college if I get married so soon, perhaps we should wait longer. Marring right after high school is rather quick. Besides, you can wait for me, can't you?"
A smile tugs at her lips, as she placed her hands lightly on his chest. But something seems a little off about her.
AUGUST
"I suppose, but you won't make me propose later than April when you graduate, right?"
A slight note of desperation in his voice, as he takes her hands in his own. Sophia notices how August won't push back the wedding but is too scared to say anything. She pretends she it's fine. She's good at acting.
SOPHIA
"Of course not! That would take everything off the schedule we planned last year, my aunt got off work especially to come."
He relaxes noticeably. August gives a light chuckle.
AUGUST
"Good. I mean, to keep my hands off you for so long-"
SOPHIA
"August!"
She sputtered, her face flushing a deep red, hands flying to her face. He laughs, and he grins sheepishly. He embraces her from behind and kisses her hair.
AUGUST
"I love it when you blush."
SOPHIA
"I must be the shade of my hair,"
Then August whispers in her ear.
AUGUST
"I know plenty of ways to make you redder."
SOPHIA
"August!"
He laughs.
STEP-MOTHER
"Um, I need to get my bags."
Sophia nearly jumps as she looks up to see her mother, August calmly (and slightly) waves to Mrs. Majors.
AUGUST
"Hello Mrs. Majors."
He glances at his watch.
"Oh! I've got to go, my shift starts soon."
SOPHIA
"Bye!"
STEP-MOTHER
She glances toward August.
"Have a nice day August."
SOPHIA
He leaves.
"What are these bags for?"
STEP-MOTHER
"Oh! Didn't I tell you? We have a family reunion over the weekend."
SOPHIA
"Mom, we already had a family reunion. Last summer, at Aunt Marge's house in detroit, remember?"
STEP-MOTHER
"That was on my side of the family, this is on your father's side of the family. Just think, you'll finally be able to meet all those relatives."
SOPHIA
"But you remarried, would they even want us to come?"
STEP-MOTHER
"His mother was the one to invite us to come, she agrees that it would be a good opportunity to be able to see everyone for the first time, they've never been able to get together before… "
STEP-MOTHER
Her voice softens.
"I know things been hard since David died, but that doesn't mean that you can't meet your relatives. It'll be good for you… Here, I'll help you pack,"
STEP-MOTHER
They hurry, then rush to the airport.
"Just on time."
STEP-MOTHER
As they go to their seats. Sophia sighs.
"Are you alright?"
SOPHIA
She looks to Sophia, who is next to her in the seat.
"Mom, you do this all the time, you never tell me when things are till it's happening It's really rude, and I don't like it. It's inconsiderate for others to have to deal with that. I could of had a major test, or plans that day, or work."
STEP-MOTHER
"I'm sorry Sophie, I've been so distracted since Adam left on the business trip 2 weeks ago."
SOPHIA
"Next time, just please tell me in advance."
As the plane lands, they get up, and travel to the address…..
When they arrive, grandpa opens the door to greet them after they rush to the door to knock.
GRANDMOTHER
"Oh! You must be Sophia! I've always wanted to see you, and now you're all grown up. Your father must be so proud."
Sophia stiffens a little at the
Mention of her father.
SOPHIA
"Hello…"
Her body stiff, and obviously nervous. Her mother gives her a look, as if to say, talk to your grandmother.
GRANDMA
"Oh! You must meet my grandson, he should be around your age. He's such a handsome fellow too. I remember when his father was just a baby, such a trouble maker was, but he turned out as right as an angel's halo that one did."
She hobbles to the staircase.
"He's just up the stairs, I'll go get him for you-" She shuffles to the stairs, "Your cousin is here."
He comes halfway down the stairs, then freezes, noticing who's there.
"It's great that my grandchildren can finally meet each other, Sophia, this is my grandson."
AUGUST
"Sophie?"
SOPHIA
"August?"
GRANDMA
They just stare, shocked, till the grandmother says.
"Oh! You two know each other? How wonderful!"
She clasps her hands together.
STEP-MOTHER
"We'll need to cancel, I mean…"
SOPHIA
She gestures to both of them.
"I just can't do this right now, I need to be alone."
STEP-MOTHER
Sophia walks away, August is about to chase after her when the mother puts a hand on his shoulder.
"She needs time."
GRANDMA
"Oh dear."
Everyone exits the scene. Opens back up to the spot light on the Step-Mother on the right side of the stage. Sitting on the floor, looking at Sophia's birth records. She Holds up a page, then dials the grandma.
STEP-MOTHER
"Hello? I've found it. No, the birth records say that David Vieno was not her father, apparently, he was her stepfather. I've also called her mother to double check. Sophia isn't a blood relative. Please tell August what I've told you, I'm going to call Sophia and tell her."
The step-mother hangs up. Lights dim
Till the light spot is now on the other side of the stage, illuminating Sophia sitting on a chair (driving). She sobs while she drives, turning the wheel. She wipes her eyes with one hand, then returns it back to the wheel. She takes the paper (invitation) and crumples it.
SOPHIA
"Why is it that all of my dreams crash and burn?"
(Sophia isn't a good driver).Suddenly, both sides of the stage Illuminate from two spot lights, the Step-mother and Sophia are now visible To the audience. The stepmother dial Her phone to call Sophia, then puts her
Phone to her ear. Meanwhile, Sophia
Glances down at her phone. Her phone is ringing. She glances away from the road to pick up her ringing phone from the Car seat next to her, before she picks It up, there is a Loud honking, looks up, then CRASH!!
Light dims, except for on the stepmother, who still has her phone to her ear, ringing. Then it goes to voicemail.
STEP-MOTHER
"Sophia, you're probably not in the mood to talk right now after what happened. I called up your mother, and looked up your birth records. Turns out you're not related to August after all. You two can still get married-I know things have been hard on you, and I don't want you to feel pressured into anything. Do what you feel is right. Please come home soon."
STEP-MOTHER
The stepmother hangs up. About to cry. She leaves the Room, then the phone rings. She rushes to the phone, and picks it up without checking first who it is from. While she Talks on the phone her facial expression changes.
"Soph-wait. Who is this? An accident? Who-"
STEP-MOTHER
The color drains from her face as she says.
"Is Sophia okay? What happened? - I'll be right there. At which hospital?"
NURSE
She rushes as she leaves the scene.
Sophia is in a bed, her mother sitting in a chair near the Bed, waiting for news. (You can improve a little if you
Want). A nurse enters the room.
"I'm sorry, but she won't wake anytime soon. She got hurt pretty badly."
STEP-MOTHER
"How long?"
NURSE
The nurse shakes her head.
"I don't know. Coma's can last for a long time."
August enters the room with the grandma. He looks frantic, the grandma looks sad. August rushes to her bed, grabbing Sophia's hands. Then the grandma speaks quietly.
GRANDMA
"Oh dear…"
The grandma puts a hand on his shoulder.
GRANDMA
"It might be time to move on, she could remain in a coma for who knows how long."
August bows his head, and mourns. (Sophia is not dead,She is just severely injured and in a coma). Lights fade.
End Scene.
Stage light is on August and another woman, they are Holding hands and laughing. They just got out of a movie Theater. It is a bright and sunny day. They are on stage right. On downstage left Sophia is in her hospital bed, asleep. 3 months have passed since the coma.
AUGUST
"That was the cheesiest alien movie I've ever seen."
They laugh. Then freeze as (like pausing the play)Light focuses on Sophia. She sits up, she looks Confused. Eyes wandering the room.
SOPHIA
"Where am I?"
A nurse opens the door, then when seeing Sophia awake, she drops her tray, startled. The nurses hands fly to her mouth in surprise.
NURSE
"Oh my goodness! You're awake!"
SOPHIA
"Where am I? What's going on? I-I don't remember… My head hurts."
The nurse rushes to her bed, then
askes.
NURSE
"Do you remember your name? Age? What is the last thing you remember?"
Sophia thinks, still confused.
"I don't know… I was holding a piece of paper, but the memory is all fuzzy."
NURSE
"You mean this paper?"
SOPHIA
"Yes."
NURSE
"Do you remember when you received it?"
SOPHIA
"No, the last thing I remember clearly is when I was in seventh grade when I was on stage. I just had finished acting in a movie as the role 'Little Miss,' when my father told me that we were going to stay with some friends over the holiday."
SOPHIA
Slowly remembers some of her past, she grabs the paper from the nurse's Hand, reading it.
"Yes, you see, I was invited to try out for 'Little Miss' for the second movie, they wanted me to come since I was in it."
SOPHIA
Realization dawns on her face. As
She tries to get up, and leave.
"I've got to go, the audition is in two weeks!"
SOPHIA
The nurse tries to stop her from
Leaving, but Sophia leaves. The
Nurse calls Sophia's mother. The
Upstage center lights up, revealing Sophia's stepmother packing some Boxes. Her phone rings, she answers it.
STEP-MOTHER
"Hello?"
NURSE
"Sophia's awake."
