FLASHBACK - The Unexpected

Kate woke up at 4 in the morning. She was sleeping peacefully but then suddenly woke up because of a dream - a dream about someone calling out to her. She couldn't see the person's face. After this she woke up she tried sleeping again but in vain, so she went to her balcony and listened to some soft music. It was a calm and peaceful morning. The sun wasn't out and it was still dark. She could hear the cicadas buzzing and in the far distance a cat mewing. The morning was neither too cold nor too hot. It was breezy, just enough to satisfy ones heart. She didn't even think once of all the events that happened the day before. It hurt. Susie was her best friend but for a guy she actually said such harsh words. 'Maybe she just wasn't the right person in my life', thought Kate. She didn't want to ruin her mood early morning so she stopped thinking about her and Ashton. But little did she know, that it was the calm before the storm and it would be a long time, before she could again enjoy such a peaceful morning. She passed her time by humming to the songs and then meditating and doing yoga for a while. Then she put on her hoodie and shorts and went out for a run. By the time she finished, it was already 7am and the sun was out and hitting her with it's warm rays. She could hear the sirens of the police car in the nearby lane. She wondered what had happened and thought of it as some burglary and walked back home. She made herself some breakfast and let it cool down a bit, suitable for her eating. The morning was going by so peacefully that Kate was having a bad feeling about it. Even though the day wasn't any different than other, she couldn't ignore the ominous feeling rising inside of her. She finished her breakfast and decided to take a cold water bath to calm her turbulent heart down. Under the shower, her mind again drifted back to the weird dream of someone calling out to her and then to the police sirens she had heard that morning. It was only when her mom shouted from the outside for keeping the shower on for so long was when she came back to her senses. She came out and turned on the TV while drying her hair with a fresh towel. Suddenly a news report came that sent chills down her spine and she stopped moving.
