Another noble tried to ease the situation. "Speaking of which how is your health, my queen? I heard you've been bedridden a few weeks ago."
Anne's hands instantly froze.
"If you would like I am acquainted with a well-known medical magician from the North. " The man continued on.
"I-I'm fine. Just overworking myself."
"Goodness. Please take care of your body! Trust me, when you have children, they'll be making the schedule for you." One of the noble ladies chuckled. "Speaking of which what about you lady Yifei was it? How is your marriage thus far?"
Anne bit her lip. She knows for sure they all conspired before the four of them had arrived today.
"Why of course it's been wonderful. I'm sure it'll get busy when I do have kids like you, my lady." Yifei put down her utensils and smiled lightly. "I made some cosmetics from my hometown. They do wonders for the wrinkles and tired eyes, but I haven't been able to use them yet. I have too much lain at home, shall I give you some?"
"N-no I'm fine." The lady was embarrassed and quickly denied before lowering her head to check if her dark circles were visible.
Chen tried to hold in his laugher.
Everyone looked at his direction. He quickly composed himself and said. "Dear, how about you give some me some?"
"Why would you use it?" Yifei questioned. "Wrinkles is good for you. At least that's when you've figured you needed rest, you workaholic."
Everyone at the table laughed at their little banter, the mood was shifted towards Chen and Yifei.
Anne gripped her hands tightly and looked at everyone at the table. They were all talking happily again after bantering her.
Suddenly nausea overcame her after eating a bit of fish. She immediately started to gag on the side.
Everyone froze and looked at her. The king was talking to another noble quickly patted her back. "Anemone are you okay?! Quickly call the royal doctor!"
He frantically stood up and carried her away.
____________
The lunch gathering was put to a halt as everyone was sitting in a resting area. Yifei and Chen were standing by the side of Anne's bed while the doctor examined her. The king was gripping her hand tightly, waiting for the news.
"Congratulations your majesty, her highness is pregnant."
Yifei looked at Chen with her eyes glittering and excitedly hugged him.
The king looked an Anne incredulously.
'P-pregnant? Am I really pregnant?' Anne was frozen. 'Did it really work?'
"Are you sure?" The king looked at the doctor.
"Yes, your majesty. I examined thoroughly. Her nausea is confirmation."
The king quickly hugged Anne. "We, We finally have a child!"
Chen smiled at the happy couple and dismissed the doctor until further notice.
The happiness was; however, short. But how can she be pregnant we haven't done much the past couple of months....except he was drunk after they had attended an evening party. He didn't remember much that day. He thought.
Sensing what he was thinking, Anne shyly said. "It was after the party."
"It's still great news regardless of how it happened." Chen smiled. "You both can rest today. I'll handle the rest of the work before I leave."
"You guys just stay in the palace for today." The king was in a good mood. "We'll have to celebrate this day at dinner."
After Chen bowed, he pulled Yifei out.
"Congratulations your Majesties!" Yifei exclaimed and followed Chen out.
__________
Dismissing the nobles home, it wasn't until the late afternoon when Chen finished looking through the papers. Chen and Yifei planned to relax in the palace's garden until sunset.
"Now those annoying pests can leave Anne alone." Yifei smiled at Chen as she stroked his hair.
"You've been too excited for something that didn't happen to you." Chen looked at her from her lap.
"It's just seeing them today, they looked much more terrible than before their first anniversary. I'm glad something good finally happened for them."
Chen just smiled. His wife is too selfless. With his eyes closed, her voice resonated in his ears more clearly.
"How many kids do you want?"
Thinking about the possible future, Chen smiled. "We don't have a lot of relatives, and it's just us in our little family. It would be nice if our children had siblings to depend on."
"Then as many as possible." Yifei laughed. "Then do you want a boy or a girl?"
"One that would resemble you." Chen opened his eyes again and dotingly looked at her.
"You are so-" He lifted his head and sealed her lips.
After getting his fill he laughed again. "Should we try and make one now?"
"We're not at home." Yifei blushed.
"Then I'll take it as a yes?"
The couple continued to stay at the palace a few more days. Since Anne is pregnant, the king rarely separated from her. To make sure her conditions are good for a pregnant lady, Yifei kept her company when the king had to choice but to leave a bit.
"The issue with hunger is dealt with and I've personally talked to the noble in charge of that land. The issues regarding foreign merchants we can't do much because it involves that country." Chen sighed. "I have a feeling there are trying to turn things inside out."
Gaining information from our people and feeding them nonsense. Chen knows that, but it's easier said than done. "I don't know their main motive. Even if they are planning to bring us down, our country has always been neutral. "
Our country is the middle ground and is built on tourism. Different parts of the world come to our land to as a resting stop to other places and to trade.
They are not poor nor rich.
What is it that they want?
"I think I know what it is." The king spoke up. "We have gotten patronage from the Goddess. In this royal family, we have inherited the blood of the heavens. Over hundreds of years, though it is mixed with humans, it still stays strong. This land you and I have lifted, I only wanted to distract other people. Below it is one of the gates to the underworld."
"..." Chen widened his eyes.
"But even if that is true, to open any gate we need the demi-god for that." A demigod that rules fairies, elves, demons, merfolks fall into this category as they inherited blood from the heavens.
Chen was appalled. "You..the child...but you're not...."
The king lightly nodded.
This opened up a lot more problems.
"Even your name is a secret to this entire country. Even if they know you're not fully human, it has to be a demigod and one that has an infinity with water; otherwise, it won't work." Chen looked at him once more. "Are they just going risk it and take the gate?"
"Our country is like a chest that carries treasure. What we hold is important not what we are." The king lowered his eyes. "Whether or not I have any of these conditions, they are going to conquer the gate first and worry about the key later. I'm not worried about myself but for the little one in Anne's belly and the people."
The room containing the two men was filled with silence. "For now, let's strengthen the guards for you and Anne. I have something to do later so let's end it for now." Chen solemnly spoke.
The king lightly nodded and looked at him from his desk.
"Do you want me to tell you my name and what I am?" He then laughed. "Though you probably can check me with your level of magic."
"It's better if you treat me as an ignorant pawn. I'll be relieved this way." Chen stood up from his chair after chugging the cup of tea. "Just rest. You're going to be a father soon, it's best you enjoy some happiness in the world."
After Chen left, the king just sat in his chair and stare out through the window where the whole country's landscape can be seen and closed his eyes.
He hasn't slept in three days.
