Chapter 34 "Frenetic in Glafelden Town III"

Quite a long time had passed since the sun had fallen on the western horizon. The star-studded night sky became the backdrop for Glafelden Town at this time. The busyness of the population also decreased over time. Although there were indeed some places that were still crowded, such as restaurants, bars, and the main street.

However, such a crowd wouldn't last long. It was due to the Elite Knight rule, which imposed a curfew from nine o'clock. No residents were allowed to leave their homes after the stipulated hours, or they would be arrested and thrown in prison for a full month. Dozens of people have been arrested because of it, even though they weren't really the wanted target.

The Elite Knights divided their members into two parts. One group actively sought information and guarded the city gates during the day, while the rest patrolled the streets at night. Even with the limited number of members, Elite Knights could still carry out their duties patrolling all corners of Glafelden Town.

Even though night went by, Guffiy still worked in the mayor's office. The man with the long thin mustache was busy checking the list of suspicious people that the Elite Knights were spying on. A moment later, he crumpled up the papers and tossed them aside. He was furious after finding that none of the lists was named "Anggi," the name of his target girl that he had managed to pocket.

Guffiy was worried about the authenticity of the information he received. But since it came from Prince Alucard's trusted spy, he couldn't help but believe it.

Finding someone with a foreign name in Glafelden should be an easy feat because there won't be many people who have "Anggi." Unfortunately, it became difficult because the name was not registered in any document in the archives of Glafelden Town. Whether in the population census records, lists of active and graduated students at the Education Bureau, or criminal records stored at Town Hall.

"In that case, this Haier-Elvian girl is a foreigner and entered this city secretly," Guffiy said to Fritz, who was sitting on the sofa.

"Oh, I see? No wonder she's not on any records in town. Somehow she got into this city. According to current procedures, visitors who don't have the identity of Glafelden Town residents must report their arrival at the Gatekeepers." Fritz muttered with a serious expression.

"Maybe that's why she rarely socializes with other residents. As a result, not many people have heard of her name."

"You're right, Captain! Even though we searched for information and questioned many people, none of them knew the name 'Anggi.' It felt like the girl was hiding in the shadows of this city. It's very difficult to find information about her." Fritz let out a long breath. "Even though when we chased the leader of the criminal gang 'Burges,' it only took us a few hours to find out where he was hiding. But this time, three days isn't enough to find information about a mere girl."

"But that doesn't mean she's always hiding behind a box forever, right? There must have been times when she went out and interacted with someone. That's the person we need to find. So it's just a bit of a matter of time."

"But what if the girl has realized our goal and then escaped from this city?"

"You've tightened the entry and exit at the gate, haven't you?" asked Guffiy in a deep voice, as if emphasizing the intimidation of the other person.

"Yes, Captain!" replied Fritz firmly. "I've ordered the Elite Knights and gatekeepers to check the completeness of people going in and out of the town, as well as check every horse-drawn carriage that passes through the gates."

Guffy smiled in satisfaction. "Good, then an unidentified person like this girl won't be able to get out of the city so easily. Yesterday I rode around the city gates, and I didn't find a single loophole through which to escape."

"But, didn't you say that Haier-Elvian is capable of using magic? What if that girl used magic to escape from this town?" argued Fritz.

"There is indeed such a possibility. Our priority now is to find traces of her whereabouts in this town. Only then could we sniff where she went."

Suddenly, footsteps came from the stairs in the middle of the unfinished conversation between the two. From the sound of the knock on the floor, it was obvious that the person was in a hurry. Gradually the voice grew louder and stopped at the door.

*Knock! Knock!

"Captain! Are you inside? There is anything I want to say! It's important!" said someone behind the door.

"Enter!"

At the same time as Guffiy's command, a dark-skinned knight entered the room. Then salute his superior before giving the report. His stern and calm expression were in perfect harmony with his stout body.

"What is it, Corporal Obigris?" asked Guffiy calmly. The man with a long thin mustache leaned against the back of the chair and made himself comfortable, but his attention was focused on the dark-skinned knight.

"Report, Captain! We have found someone who knows our target." Obrigis' words suddenly made Guffiy and Fritz gasp. They both need time to react.

"Please continue!"

"It seems our target named 'Anggi' often visits the town library. Some library staff knows her as a regular visitor who often borrows books," said Obrigis. "I've also interrogated a lot of staff to find out more about our target. In fact, no one knows for sure where he came from, her occupation, or her background. I'd interrogated people a lot, so I know they're telling the truth this time. It seems our target is very careful not to get her personal information out. There's only one thing they know best about her, and that's the way she wears a hood all the time."

"Gotcha! You said that girl had a hood on all the time, right? She's probably trying to hide something in her head, namely her long ears that are different from humans."

"Captain! If she continues to cover her long ears with a hood, doesn't that mean she's currently incapable of using disguise magic?" said Fritz, who had been listening to the conversation between Guffiy and Obrigis.

"Hmm… you're right too! Which meant that for now the girl was still unable to use mid-to-high level magic. Most high-mobility abilities require high-level magic techniques. In other words-."

"That girl is still in this city!" grabbed Fritz, who instantly cut Guffiy.

Subordinates mustn't be presumptuous of their superiors. Realized that he had made a big mistake. The youth immediately covered his mouth and bowed to the leader for mercy. But Guffiy didn't really mind the trifle. The man with a long thin mustache just waved his hand as if hinting to forget the past.

Guffiy then glanced at Obrigis, "what else do they know about that girl?"

"There's one thing, the staff always say this girl always comes and goes from the west gate of the city," replied Obrigis.

Guffiy's face stiffened. His mouth was unable to say anything, not even moving. However, a small smile tugged at the corners of his lips. Finally, after three days of fruitless searching that left him feeling depressed, he had a bright spot for his mission.

Guffiy then looked at Obrigis and Fritz.

"Fritz! Obrigis! I want you to bring all the Elite Knights to blockade the area around the west gate early tomorrow morning! Search every house and don't forget to interrogate every resident, if anyone knows them, separate them for further interrogation!" Guffiy ordered his two subordinates.

"Aye, Captain!" the two replied in unison, then saluted, then rushed outside to pass the order on to every Elite Knight present.

Guffiy rose from his chair, his feet stepping closer to the window. The man with the thin and long mustache looked happy. In fact, he really wanted to carry out that order right now. The man didn't care if he had to disturb the peace of society at night. But now that it was almost late at night, most people were already resting on their beds. If he did so, the reputation of the Elite Knights would be damaged in the eyes of the residents.

In people's eyes, what was appropriate would be considered natural. In contrast to an error that deviates from what it should be, it would be judged as a disability that would continue to be remembered. So even if he successfully completed his mission of capturing the Haier-Elvian girl, his name would be damaged if his reputation in this mission fell. If his name was already bad, of course, he would not be promoted even if this operation was completed. At least that was what Guffiy thought. Yes, you're right. He was a man who was very attracted to power and strength.
