Chapter 4: The arrival of the saviours

We eventually stumbled across the first underground subway. It was leading right into Philly and to a station. We still had lots of food and drink to share among ourselves.

You know, even after a nuclear bomb, the subway still smelt like piss. We put up with the smell and lay down some sleeping bags for us. It was very late and we were exhausted.

We really just wanted to be left alone. We didn't want to hurt anyone, but we would not hesitate. Because of this, I slept closer to the entrance with my rifle next to me.

I woke in the middle of the night to howling and loud laughing. Then there were screams of a man and woman outside. Out of instinct, I crawled up and looked out.

There were a group of men, one pinned a woman against a wall as another two pinned a man to the ground. I knew I had to take action and aimed up my rifle.

I fired the gun with a loud bang and a bright flash. Before I knew it, the man pinning the woman to the wall fell to his side. The woman yelled as blood splattered all over her.

The men pinning the man on the ground looked over at the woman. With another loud bang from my rifle, I shot one of the men holding the man down as the other began to run.

The man ran to the woman and hugged her closely, embracing her. The woman points to me and he turns to me. I wave to him and he waved back, beginning to walk over.

I look back at my friends. Obviously, they were awake, looking at me fearfully. I nod to them, reassuring they are okay. Josh and Raymir sit up but Mason gets up and walks over to me, looking out at the man.

"He's friendly. He's probably going to give us something since we saved him." Mason nodded, leaning against the wall. He's been in a lack of words lately, but we all have. But whenever he's around he gives off this depressing feeling.

The man finally made it to me and put his blood covered hand out for a handshake. I took his hand and shook it tightly. "Nice to meet you." I said to him.

The man pulled his hand away. "Thanks for saving our asses back there. Only God knows what would have happened if you didn't help." He flashed a sincere smile. "I'm Dustin O'Brien and this is my wife Laurel."

Laurel walked up to me and shook my hand. "Hi, t-thanks for helping us back there." Laurel had long brown hair to her shoulders and black rim glasses and was around my size. She seemed shy so I nodded, beginning to speak with Dustin again.

Dustin was ginger and about 6'5. He also had black rim glasses but the right lenses was missing. I could tell he was a mechanic before he even told me. He just seemed like one.

"But anyway, thanks for saving our asses back there. Here take this, as a token of our gratitude." He handed me a large duffel bag. I noticed he had two more so I gladly took it. It was quite heavy. Before I even got a chance to ask what was in here, the couple walked off.

Me and Mason walked back down into the subway station where Josh and Raymir were now sitting in a bench, waiting for us. I put the duffel bag in the middle of the platform and we all flocked around it. Everyone seemed excited, even Mason. I unzipped the duffel bag and peeked in.

It was like we hit a lottery. Guns, food, ammo, building supplies, tools. It was perfect. I dumped it out onto the ground and looked through. When I saw a sleek, black, shining, AR-14 fall out, I knew I had to have it. I hurried and snatched it up before anyone even saw it, taking a red dot sight with it.

Mason pulled something into his arms and knowing how destructive nature, it was going to be huge. In his hands, he held an LMG also with a red dot sight. He checked it out, grinning as he looked up and down it.

Josh was always simple when it came to choices. He chose the most chosen most of the time so it didn't surprise me when he pulled a sawed-off shotgun from the pile. It suited him though. A man who makes simple decisions and A gun that takes care of bad decisions.

Raymir pulled out a sniper rifle. Honestly, his personality doesn't seem to fit it. I'd expect he'd be the one to at least try to handle the shotgun, he most likely couldn't though, he was a much more skinny build than Josh so maybe that's why he picked it.

After we had everything set we knew we had to reinforce this place if we were going to live here. We all grabbed some tools and planks. This is working out better than I expected.
