"You know you're not gonna have just one." Richie whispered as I eyed the different choices in front of me.
"I know that - I can't pass this up though. When's the next time I'm gonna get to eat chocolate? What if I die tomorrow Rich?" I looked up at him with pleading eyes, "You wouldn't want me to die knowing I was denied my favorite food just the day before huh?"
Richie rolled his eyes, "Alright you do whatever but don't do the slurping or the other sounds and at least maintain a little decorum, okay?"
I nodded my head eagerly and reached out taking a hold of just one truffle. As I bit down into the succulent richness my taste buds overloaded with pleasure. I let out a soft moan and Richie slapped the back of my head while whispering furiously, "See that's what I'm talking about! You sound like you're makin love - you can't DO that in public!"
I groaned in displeasure at his abrupt slap but he was right. I had this uncontrollable urge to make the weirdest noises when I gave into my chocolate indulgence. Although unintentional, It was embarrassing and definitely not appropriate.
I held the urge to fully indulge as I slowly chewed. I could at least try to maintain my composure while in public, but I was definitely going to find a way to get some of these goodies carried back to the tent.
We were interrupted by Iren walking up behind us, "So you LIKE chocolate huh?"
Turning slowly around, I nodded my head ever so slightly.
Iren gave a big toothy grin, "I'm the same way with cakes! I love em! They're the best things in the world!"
I gave a relieved smile at how carefree and relatable Iren was. He never tried to make one feel awkward. With my mouth still full, I held two thumbs up, "Choclatz da bes."
Iren looked at me surprised for a minute before bursting out laughing. Richie couldn't help popping me again as he said, "Geez Ez cover your mouth or something. Better yet don't talk with your mouth full!"
I winced at the abuse while eagerly trying to gulp down the remainder. Richie handed me a glass of wine which I eagerly accepted. Iren wiped a tear from the corner of his eye, "Oh Ezzie . . . You. You are too funny."
I could feel my cheeks heat up a little but luckily our attention was brought to the center of the hall where the ceremonial fountain was placed.
"Attention everyone." The light voice of the Queen drifted through the hall, "We are pleased to announce a new convert wishing to join us tonight. Henceforth she shall be one of us!" The Queen led a pretty girl in her late teens up the staircase to the middle of the fountain. The girl had fiery red hair with freckled white skin. She was dressed in a simple rough tunic as her striking green eyes gave off the appearance of resolute peace.
As she entered the streaming pool, the locals and Queen started a chant. Suddenly a blinding light reverberated through the hall. In fascinating horror I watched as the girl's individuality was stripped from her as if it was being washed off with the water. With each droplet her curly red hair straightened into stark white. Her freckles disappeared as her skin grew paler and translucent. Even her eyelashes and lip color changed into startling white. When the girl emerged on the other side of the fountain, she opened her eyes revealing violet red irises.
The changed girl opened her mouth and a soft lilting voice could be heard, "WE are well pleased."
My eyes widened and Richie softly whispered, "Creeeepy . . ."
Creepy was right. Why would anyone do this to themself? Can't a person be happy with who they are?
The locals gave light clapping in honor of the changed girl then went back to the banquet. The Queen made her way over to where we were standing and I guess she noticed my conflicted look since she asked, "What is the matter Lady Ezran?"
I bit my lip and replied, "I'm just confused I guess."
The Queen tilted her head with a smile, "What about?"
I furrowed my brow, "I just don't understand. If I may speak frankly, why do people choose to get converted, your grace?"
The Queen gave off that melodious laugh, "It's very simple. Our race are peacemakers - There are many lost and conflicted souls in this world who wish for a life of simplicity and togetherness. We are bound by each other, we care for each other, we never have to worry about evil or good. As a soldier surely you can understand the benefit of not being weighed down by these emotions?"
My eyes widened in shock. Now that it was explained, of course I could understand the temptation! I myself was going through a lot of emotional turmoil recently due to the countless lives lost since I became Champion. Who wouldn't want to redeem themself with a life of peace?
The Queen gave an understanding smile, "Perhaps the esteemed lady would consider conversion herself? We always welcome new members."
Richie, Iren and Rodair all stepped forward in alarm after hearing the offer, but Richie was the first to speak, "My Ezzie wouldn't dream of that, your highness! No offense, but this chic here likes to stand out."
I furrowed my brow in irritation, "You make it seem like I like attention Rich."
Richie turned around and placed a hand on my shoulder, "I didn't mean it like that. You're one of a kind luv. Why would you wanna mess that up?"
"Richie's right! You're awesome Ezzie! You don't need to be like everyone else." Iren agreed.
Rodair stayed quiet, but his eyes seemed troubled. He knew I had been struggling with accepting my responsibility as a leader and soldier. It was clear that a decision like this shouldn't be made rashly. Sure I'd lose my individuality, but I would gain peace. Wouldn't it be worth it?
