"I hate it when the adults get their way with everything! They think that they're the ones in charge of twisting the truth and making lies to get tortured. But, Mother Mavislin, please consider my sister's feelings as well. You have to believe her side of the story!" protested Duncan.
"Do you think that I won't consider her feelings? Do you think I would have the same thinking as those torturers that messed you up? Don't be absurd enough to lump me in with them. I am a Valkyrie, not some mad beast running about. I will believe what I think is right."
"Do not say such foul things ever to me again. Because this time, I am in charge of you kids. And I want to know why a clear instruction was not followed, and things nearly got out of hand while I'm not around for one day. But I can't jump into any conclusions as of yet," replied Mavislin.
Duncan may be the most straightforward and boldest individual out of the group, but even he has something that would terrify him. And for today, it was the glare and words of the Valkyrie that shook Duncan to his core.
"I appreciate your concern of my judgment being swayed, but I can guarantee you if Rina does something wrong, I will punish her. However, I commend your resolve to speak up for your sister, despite your hands shaking. But keep in mind that you can't defend her forever."
Duncan slouched as he took a look at his hands. They were shaking uncontrollably compared to Mavislin, who was sitting still and holding a cup of lemonade.
This was interesting to see... This kid hasn't shown any emotions since I saw him, so what made me get so worked up like this? The Valkyrie thought hard about the reason. Even when his powers spiraled out of control, Duncan had no feelings at all.
Was it because of Midori? Do his emotions only get activated when his sister gets involved? That's quite a remarkable sibling bond... From the start of this project, the Valkyrie knew that she would be dealing with troubled kids. After all, these kids went through hell itself.
There were bound to be some ill effects on the poor children's mentality and sanity. But the Valkyrie was alright to accept all these challenges if it meant raising them in a loving environment. There was a reason why she picked those particular five kids.
Most kids by this time had shown their powers, but these five were special. They may look different from one another, but they've got one common thing; their blood was from Midori. And there are a few other things that set them apart.
Interestingly enough, these things are what bonded them together. Midori and Duncan are fraternal twins and are aware of it. Midori is the oldest out of the lot, thirteen years old but looking like she was only ten. Duncan was younger by a few hours.
Nasima and Amanikable are siblings, with Amani being two years older. Although the two of them had no clue, they came from the same mother. Nasima is the youngest out of the five; she was only ten years old. Amani is also thirteen, but he was born months after the twins.
Circe was smacked in the middle, being twelve years of age. She was the only one not related to the rest of the five. The only thing she recalled was that she was with Nasima and Midori in the same torture cage. Now then, here come the determining factors, why were they chosen?
It was simple. Each of the children had an enhanced sense. Humans have five main senses, and these children represent them. Circe has a keen sense of sight. Midori has an acute sense of hearing. Duncan can smell feelings from the people around him and scents from afar.
Nasima is very sensitive to touch. That's why she doesn't like to be near people unless she's familiar with the person. Her instinct to detect ambush is astonishing. It also explains why she is the shyest. As for Amani, he's got a terrifyingly accurate taste palette.
The boy could constantly guess what ingredients were made into the dish in front of him. It was an outstanding skill to have since Nasima was allergic to nuts. Not sure how that would help Amani in battle. But his Elemental Energy Pool has got him covered for serious battles.
And Mavislin knew that placing Rina as their first trainer would cause an uproar with at least one child. The Valkyrie was correct on that prediction as Midori was the first to protest about it. And to spark a fight since she was the hot-headed one out of the five.
