I stood on the tarmac of the airport in Colorado Springs and watched the long line of C-130 transport aircraft zoom overhead entering the landing pattern. The tails of each aircraft wore the distinctive flag of Australia. The president had spoken with the Australian prime minister, and after some discussions had agreed to send personnel and supply assistance. Australia was one of our allies that had luckily been spared and not received a single missile strike. I had also been told that Western Europe hadn't been struck but there had been some sort of turmoil in germany and Austria. We didn't know what the real world picture looked like.
