She said 'I do'. This was it, she thought. She was married. There was no turning back now. For the next years to come, she will be Michael's wife. Mrs Michael Fernandez. Maya Fernandez.
Maya swore that once she got married, she would love only her husband, no other men. Mentally, she deleted memories of her and Sathya. It was not easy but she had to do it. That was 15 years worth of funny, happy, and sad memories flushed down the toilet.
Maya turned to face her husband as he leaned forward to kiss her. Their first kiss. Maya closed her eyes and braced herself for impact.
Michael's lips lingered on her mouth, kissing her softly. Feeling brave, Maya opened her eyes and gazed into his eyes. She felt a pang of guilt when he smiled at her, his eyes lit with happiness.
"Congratulations!" wished Sathya when Michael finally let Maya go, interrupted by his mother who wanted to hug him.
"Thank you," Maya answered.
Sathya smiled, causing an uneasy feeling in her stomach.
"Thank you for being my best man, buddy. Appreciate it," said Michael who finally tore away from his large family, who were all bouncing with joy over his marriage. He was the eldest of four children, making his marriage the first in the family.
"It was an honour to be best man at my best friend's wedding," said Sathya.
The two men shared an embrace as Maya looked on, feeling nervous.
Michael of course had no clue that she and Sathya had a history together. As far as he was concerned, Maya and Sathya are best friends.
She shuddered to think how Michael would react when he found out about her past relationship.
She prayed that he would never find out. It was a secret she would carry to her grave.
