Hitting a Wall

Back at the hotel, Nora's mind raced as she thought of ways to raise the money. She approached her manager, Mr. Donald, with the hope of getting an advance on her salary or even a loan.

Mr. Donald, I'm in desperate need of some money for my sister's surgery. Is there any way I could get an advance on my salary? I'll work extra shifts, anything… Nora's voice trailed off as she saw the doubtful look on his face.

Nora, I wish I could help, Mr. Donald said, his tone sympathetic but firm. But hotel policy doesn't allow us to give out loans or advances. I can try to get you more hours, but that's the best I can do.

Nora nodded, her hopes dashed. She thanked him and returned to her duties, but her mind was elsewhere. She felt trapped, with no way to get the money in time.

After her shift, Nora called her friends Michelle and Nelly, explaining the situation through tears. They were quick to offer their support, but when they pooled their savings together, they only managed to raise $3,000 far short of the $10,000 needed.

I'm so sorry, Nora, Michelle said, her voice heavy with guilt. We'll keep trying to raise more, but I don't know how much we can get.

Nora thanked them, appreciating their effort, but the reality of Emily's situation loomed large. She needed the money soon, and $3,000 wasn't enough.
