The Unexpected Encounter

Nora's phone vibrated intensely in her pocket, jolting her from her reverie. She scrambled to retrieve it, her fingers trembling as she managed to answer the call.

Hello?"

"Nora, it's Dr. Natalie. There's been an emergency with your mother. You need to come to the hospital right away."

"What happened? Is she okay?"

Dr. Natalie's voice remained calm yet carried an undertone of urgency. "I cannot provide details over the phone. Just get here as quickly as you can."

Nora didn't hesitate.

She grabbed her bag, her mind racing with fear and worry. She barely registered the people around her as she dashed out.

As she rounded a corner at full speed, she collided with someone.

The impact sent her reeling backward, nearly knocking her off her feet. "I'm so sorry!" she gasped, looking up to see who she had run into.

The man she had bumped into was tall and imposing, dressed in a dark suit that made him look even more intimidating.

He glanced at Nora.

His expression was cold, his eyes narrowing as he looked down at her.

"Watch where you're going!" he snapped, his voice icy.

Nora's heart pounded with fear, but she forced herself to stay calm. "I'm really sorry, I didn't mean to..."

The expression on the man's face made the words stick in her throat.

"You should be more careful." He replied

Nora nodded quickly, her face flushing with embarrassment. "I'm really sorry," she repeated, her voice barely above a whisper.

The man's gaze lingered on her for a moment, his expression unreadable, before he turned and walked away.

Nora stood there for a few seconds, her heart pounding in her chest.

There was something about the man that unnerved her, something in his cold demeanor that sent a chill down her spine.

But she didn't have time to dwell on it. Shaking off the uneasy feeling, she took a deep breath and continued on her way, her pace quickening as she headed toward the exit.

The drive to the hospital was a blur. The city streets rushed past in a haze of lights and colors, but all Nora could think about was her mother.

She prayed silently that she would arrive in time, that whatever had happened wasn't as serious as it sounded. The thought of losing her mother after everything they had been through was unbearable.

When she finally arrived at the hospital, she sprinted toward the entrance.

With every step, her chest constricted, and her mind raced by thoughts of the worst possible outcomes.

She made her way to the front desk, barely able to catch her breath. "I need to see Dr. Natalie," she said, her voice shaking.

The receptionist glanced up, noting the urgency in Nora's voice. "Dr. Natalie is in the ICU".

Nora nodded and didn't wait for any further directions. She bolted down the hall, her feet pounding against the polished floor.

As she neared the ICU, she saw Dr. Natalie outside the doors, her face etched with concern.

"Nora," Dr. Natalie began, her tone serious. "Your mother's condition has taken a sudden turn.

We are doing everything possible, and you can be assured that she will be alright.

What happened? How could this happen so suddenly?"

Dr. Natalie paused, searching for the right words. It's difficult to convey this, but we suspect that your mother has been administered something that caused her to go into cardiac arrest.

We're running tests to confirm, but it.

Nora felt like the ground had been pulled out from under her. "Given something? You mean… someone did this to her?"

Dr. Natalie's silence spoke volumes.

As Nora absorbed the news, her surroundings seemed to sway. This was no mere medical emergency; it was an attack.

But why? Why would anyone want to harm her mother?

"I need to see her," Nora said, her voice breaking.

Dr. Natalie nodded, her expression softening. "Of course. But I must warn you, she's very weak.

Nora swallowed the lump in her throat and followed Dr. Natalie into the ICU.

The sight that greeted her was heart-wrenching. Her mother lay in the bed, pale and fragile, tubes and wires connected to various machines that beeped softly in the background.

It was a stark contrast to the strong, vibrant woman she had always known.

Nora approached the bed, tears welling up in her eyes. "Mom," she whispered, her voice trembling. "I'm here. I'm right here."

Evelyn remained unresponsive, her eyes shut, each breath she took was heavy and strained.

Nora reached out and gently took her mother's hand, squeezing it as if willing her to wake up, to fight back against whatever had been done to her.

"I'm so sorry, Mom," Nora whispered, her tears falling freely now. "I should have been here. I should have protected you."

Dr. Natalie placed a comforting hand on Nora's shoulder. She's a fighter, Nora. Don't lose hope.

Nora nodded, though the fear gnawed at her insides.

As she sat by her mother's side, watching the machines and listening to the steady beeping, Nora knew one thing for certain: she wouldn't rest until she uncovered the truth. Whoever had done this would pay, and she would do whatever it took to protect her mother.

But as the hours passed and the night deepened, a sense of helplessness began to creep in.

The hospital, once a place of healing, now felt like a prison, holding her mother hostage to forces she couldn't see or understand.

And as the minutes ticked by, Nora couldn't shake the feeling that time was running out.
