Escaping heartbreak

Daphne had lived her youth to the fullest. She fell in love in her first year of university and she had been very happy for almost two years, until the relationship soured.

Her father never outright criticized her for losing her virginity to her first and only boyfriend, he would always word his sentences in generalities about the role of a woman, after which he would give her a stern look.

Being broken hearted from her failed relationship, Daphne was vulnerable, sad and resigned. This was when her father proposed she get married with Ezra.

'How stupid. How stupid. How stupid. HOW STUPID I WAS.' Daphne screamed internally.

'In what world is GETTING MARRIED an escape from heartbreak? It's a damn lifelong decision! How did father even ensnare me? Why was I so willing? So naïve! So stupid! So…UGH!!!!!'

Ezra was a very good looking man. Drool worthy even. Much better looking than Anton, her ex. In her young mind, it somehow seemed like a good idea to marry a handsome, rich billionaire, just for how it would look.

'Who the FUCK cares how we look together? Who cares if he's the best looking man on earth? He will barely even look at me! We don't interact!'

Daphne did not remember much of their first years of marriage as her mind was simply not there. No matter who or what was in front of her, her mind would only be set on the progress of her company as if it was the only thing that could show her, her own value.

But as time went on, she became appreciative of her good looking husband until this, too, soured. What she found sad at that time was that she had come to consider him, hers… unknowingly. To find out the sentiment was not shared and knowing they barely interacted, when his behavior suffered a shift, she was not sure why it had happened or even remembered how it had been before.

At the same time, she could not blame him as she had never even tried to lift a finger to improve their relationship.

'The fact that marriages like mine are not that abnormal is what pisses me off the most.' Daphne's face morphed into one of hate and unwillingness.

Her only job was to be a 'good wife.' Her job was to look good and make her family and Ezra look good. It was a male dominated game, life was. And as stupid as it was, many deals were based on connections and friendships. Many business deals were birthed at parties where men 'talked business.' Women were rarely included in such conversations. They were excluded at the starting line.
