Wallace cleared his throat, realizing that he might have startled the girl. "That's not exactly what I mean."

"Oh…" Lola sighed in disappointment.

"It's one thing to lose a loved one, but it's more hurtful to not even see their body." Wallace explained.

Heidi put a hand over his. Although that was what he said, she knew him better than anyone. He was only asking because he still had a sliver of hope in his heart that their granddaughter was alive somewhere.

However, it had already taken this long for Lola to accept the loss. If he made her hopeful again only for her newly found hope to be shattered, it wouldn't be good for her mental health. That was why he had come up with an excuse.

To change the depressing topic, Heidi cleared her throat. "I forgot to mention something. Your grandfather and I thought about how scared you are that someone will find out your identity and go after you."
