Kai POV
Before reaching the house my legs wouldn't stop bouncing up and down and Ms. Kelly picked up on my tenseness. Being the awesome the person that she is, she took me to a McDonald's to grab a quick bite before we arrived. She offered to pay, because she knows that i didn't have much money, but i refused. I hate the look of pity from other people, like carry on with your problems jeez.
Ms. Kelly stops the car in front of the fast food restaurant and told me that she would wait for me here. I step out of the car taking in the fresh moist air, carefully stepping over small puddles created by the early morning rain.
Walking into the place brought a blast of heat that caught me off guard along with the smell of greasy goodness. I tread softly up the aisle moving toward the front desk to order. The line was rather long and there was group of teenagers laughing and talking loudly to each other causing the restaurant to bleed sound. I look among there faces and stop abruptly when i spot a bored looking girl. Within the second the girl tilts her head to the side and spots me. Immediately she stood up straight and turned her body slightly so that she was facing me. The eye contact kept, but the sounds faded. The occasional eruptions of laughter or sounds of the clicking cashier machine were all numbing to the ear. The room was spinning and the irrelevant bodies of everyone else was suddenly gone. I almost could't breath.
Out of no where the sounds and the scenery came flooding back when one the guys, in the group she was with, placed an arm around her and brought her to the side as they all waited for their food. I drew my attention towards the line in front of me seeing that i was almost next and stole a quick glance back at her. She turned her head back slightly and we made eye contact again, but only for a millisecond before she completely in focused on the people around her.
"Sir? Sir?" The cashier said knocking me back into reality.
Still dazed, i order one McChicken off the dollar menu because i didn't have money for anything else.
"Sir, McChickens are a $1.50... you gave me a dollar"
I felt a shadow of embarrassment overcast me. "Never mind, thanks," i told her retrieving my dollar. I turn to walk around and hear a chuckle followed by a few words and an explosion of roaring laughter.
*Cough* "Broke boy" *cough*
Wow what an inspired insult. Damned assholes. People like this are the reason i don't like people in general.
As i reach for the door I feel a tap on my shoulder and i flinch turning around and taking a step back, "Here you go," and she walks out. I open the bag and inside is a McChicken.
I stood there as a mix of shock, confusion, and a bit of anger, was over me.
I run outside and catch her just as she's about to enter the passenger seat with the guy who broke our staring contest in the driver's and the others in the back. I grab her arm and say, "Thanks, but no thanks. I don't need your pity." I hand her the bag then proceed to walk away. I didn't want to but my pride is the only thing i will would never give up.
Before i could get two steps in she hands the bag back and slides into the front seat and shut the door, "Just keep it," she told me.
"Yeah buddy, you need it more than she does" The guy in the front seat said, as they backed out of the parking lot. i rolled my eyes, stuck up the middle finger, and walked back to Ms. Kelly's car.
I envisioned a family home. One with a yellow, or white, or even a light gray exterior. Large windows spread across the front and the sides making the inside feel unnecessarily warm and open. Maybe a two car garage and a long gravel driveway perfectly paved with a white picket fence surrounding one maybe two story house and it's land. The interior would be a mini chandeliers hanging from each high lifted ceiling. Humble looking furniture giving the house a modern, yet satisfied look. Tiled and hardwood flooring throughout the house and a kitchen most mothers dreamt of.
The house that we, Ms. Kelly and I, pulled up to was of no comparison. The house was 2 stories, but it was exaggerated. It was white, blindingly so when the sun was at it's peak, and had long stretching windows. The garage was sectioned off into four spaced enough to fit about one or two cars in each. The entrance was beyond large. There was a huge chandelier shining from the towering ceiling, bigger than I've ever seen. There stair case had some type of modern elegance to it. It was a wide stone stair-case in the far right corner ascending up from the main living room to a connected floating stair case leading to the second floor.
Before i had time to fully take in the scenery, I walked entirely into the house. I was suddenly bombarded with huge expectant smiles, continuous greetings, hugs, and questions.
"Welcome! Come in. Come in." This woman wasted no time, "Are you hungry? Tired? Thirsty?" She started to ramble clearly nervous.
"I'm fine." I choked out not really knowing how to handle this situation. Even though i've gone through this countless times, in different variations, each time i just get, i don't even know, nervous?
"I'm Sandra." She states. Looking at her excited form i notice that she is quite pretty, with her blond hair, grey eyes, and average height. She looks great for someone her age. It even looks like she doesn't wear makeup. "This is Martin," She continued pointing to a tall man, 6'2 maybe. He stood there bearing his dark freshly cut beard, his brown eyes, his brown hair, and his wrinkle-free navy blue suit. "And this is Mia," Sandra concluded. Slightly pushing something out from behind her, an awkward young girl, refusing to make eye contact longer than one second at a time, moves into sight. Her dirty blonde hair masked most of her face revealing one blue eye on the side where she shyly tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. She silently greeted me with a small toothy grin, broadcasting the braces she wore, and a wave.
She's so cute! I thought to myself as i offered her with a friendly half smile in return.
"Kai." I said with an awkward wave and a tight smile
"Here let me show you to your room." The excitement is literally dripping off of her as she basically hopped down the spacious hall connected to the stair case. "Martin please get his...bag". She looked a little confused as to why i had only one, but shook it off by continuing down the hall.
Martin took a step and was reaching for my duffel, but I stop him by moving it from my left to my right hand. "No thanks. I'm good," i said firmly.
She opened the last door, at the end of the passage. I entered staying a few feet behind her into a huge room.
"I heard you liked Soccer so we thought it would be cool to decorate it like this," She was very clearly proud of herself. Her hands were her hips, her chin was up and there was a broad smile plastered on her face.
The room itself was great. There was a personal bathroom just for me, thank God too, because i needed privacy. There was a king sized bed in the middle of the room with pastel blue sheets and a grey comforter. The walls were all the same shade of blue as the sheets except for the one behind the bed that matched it's covers which was gray. The gray wall had an outline of a soccer field, in white, that extended almost to the ends of the wall. The closet was right next to the door, it was one of those wide ones with the sliding doors as a mirror. The room also had a black drawer against one of the blue walls and a black nightstand with shelves next to the bed. And--and is that a flat screen t.v on the wall directly across the bed? The best thing about this room though, was the random medium sized green carpet draped across the wooden floor and the mini goals sitting against the wall. It was so well though out and like... wow.
I stayed silent. I had no words. No foster parents that have taken me in has ever put this much effort before.
"You can change it if you don't like it, our decorator can come whenever. I can call him now if you want he's quick and so talented," She blurted out not taking breaths in between her words.
"It's perfect..." I whispered. I start to see a warm smile reform on her face as her eyes lit up with happiness.
"Great. Well, we will get out of your way so you can unpack and get sorted.. dinner will be ready at 6." She then leaves the room along with Martin, Mia, and Ms. Kelly.
I didn't even notice them enter. He thinks to himself as he takes a deep breath.
I looked at the clock on the nightstand, it's 4:30 p.m., I have approximately an hour and a half to take this all in before dinner. Maybe this placement won't be so bad...
I don't want to admit this, but I really want this home to last.
I jump onto the bed and rub my hands all over the sheets, making a snow angel imprint in the memory foam bed. It felt as if i was laying on cloud and before i know it i was drifting off to sleep.
*BEEP, BEEP* *BEEP, BEEP*
The rhythmic beeping startled me awake and i fell off of the bed. I groaned climbing back onto the bed i can now call mine. An alarm clock though... awesome. (Hint the sarcasm).
I search for the off button, but to no avail. The beeping becomes shrill and i can't take it anymore. I aggravatingly look for the wire and unplug it from the electrical socket. Breathing a sigh of relief i fall back onto the bed with my feet still on the floor. I turn my head back to the clock looking at it's defeated state and spot a folded piece of paper. I picked it up to see what it was and read the contents of the note.
Hey Kai,
We called your name a bunch of times to come out for dinner, but we got worried when you didn't respond. When i knocked on your door to check on you, i cracked open the door when you weren't answering. I saw you fast sleep. Heard your quiet snores. And you so peaceful and content that i couldn't possibly think to wake you. I set the alarm for 6:30 am and the bus for your new school, 'Christle Prep' leaves at 8 am, please don't be late. Because i had a major business meeting i couldn't bring you today, but i'll definitely bring you tomorrow if you want. Your uniform is in the closet. Be safe!
Love, Sandra Santoni
I cringed at the effort she was put into that and effort she was still making. The letter was sweet, Too sweet. They don't have to keep pretending, Ms. Kelly isn't here to see them.
I opened the closet to find a blue and red uniform. Typical. This is ugly as shit. I've only ever heard of Christle Prep and never in my life thought i'd be going. They have the best soccer team in the state. Last year, their coach offered me a spot on the team but i told him i couldn't afford the school. Hopefully i can get a spot on the team even though the season is half over. Wishful thinking i know.
I managed to drag myself out of my room and to the huge kitchen at the back of the house. While walking to the kitchen to get breakfast, I passed Mia. Her nanny was making her breakfast. Walking by i could feel her eyes focused on the side of my head. I swear she hasn't blinked for like 2 minutes. So fucking weird. I quickly made myself some toast and took a plastic cup of orange juice then walked through the front door. The cool, fresh air woke me up a bit more as I moved to hop on the bus.
Not to sound conceited or anything, but walking onto the bus gave me a major boost of confidence. Passing through the benched towards the back many of the girls greeted me with waves, winks, and tons of "hey"s in seductive voices. The guys on the other-hand welcomed me with deadly glares and some gave looks of jealousy. If looks could kill, i would've died about 15 times over. But then again i don't really care about what any one these spoiled rich kids with whole or semi dysfunctional families thought... at least they had one.
Clio POV
"Babe, get in," Ryder instructed. Who's that you may ask, Ryder Daniel. Ryder was Christle Preps most eligible bachelor until i got him. He plays our school's most valued sport, football. He's tall, blond, and extremely handsome. What more could a girl ask for? And as you could've guessed hes the Quarter Back and everything. And me being the head cheerleader it's only natural that we be together. We have been dating from about 7 months we'll be a year in October. Yep life is good.
"You look beautiful, as you always do," He said as i sat down in the passenger seat. I just giggled, shook my head, and a light blush made it's way onto my cheeks. He wraps his arm around my shoulders before kissing my cheek and rubbing our noses together. I think that whole nose thing is a little too cutesy for me, kind of cringe, but he likes it and i'm happy if he is so I've never said anything about it. He starts driving towards our school and casual places his hand on my thigh as i sit there and scroll through my phone.
He pulls into his usual parking spot and pecks me on my lips before we both exit the car. The school uniform fits him so well, it's like he had it tailored so that it would be especially snug on his biceps, he just looks so good like... damn. I walk up to him in front of the car and he takes my books from me, cute i know, he takes my hand in his and we walk towards to the school together.
"Yo Ryder." Ryder and I turn around to look at who called him from behind us. It was his little group friends, specifically Nick, being the only one i'm actually close to. Ryder suddenly lets go of my hand and drops my books into my arms, without so much as a goodbye, to walk toward them, leaving me. That's really the only problem with Ryder. I like Ryder a lot, but i hate when his friends are around. He acts so different, no nose rubs, no cheek kisses, no holding hands, no gentlemanly acts. He barely even acknowledged me enough to bring me with him, he just waved signaling for me to follow him with no backwards glance towards me. I slowly walk toward them huffing at him as a silent response holding a little annoyance in my eyes.
Kind of like clock work they all greet me in a staggered welcomes, "Hey Clio."
"Sorry we stole Ryder from you, y'all looked cozy." Nick states chuckling under his breath as he slid an arm around my shoulder pulling into a side hug.
"We were just walking," Ryder says and rolls his eyes.
I pull Ryder to the side and stand on my tip-toes to whisper to him "Babe, are you gonna walk me to class?"
"Next time. I'm talking to the guys right now, I'll see you at lunch" he says just before walking back to his group of friends. I call out a quick bye to them all walking alone to class.
I walk into class, sit in my regular seat, lay my head on my desk, and wait for class to begin. I'm already so over this day. Okay so maybe life isn't that great.
"Class, we have a new student in our class. Meet Kai Hero." My teacher loudly interrupts my nap introducing some new kid. I raise my head and look at him, 'Broke Boy', I remember him from Yesterday. Instantly I feel a sense of embarrassed for the interaction we had and how my friends acted. I mentally face palm. I try to avert my eyes back to the desk, but... i just can't. He looks around the room and stops when he sees me. I force myself to look away and for some reason my face starts to heat up. Getting a little anxious i pull a strand of hair behind an ear.
"Take a seat near Clio," The teacher directs, "Raise your hand Clio." I hesitantly lift my arm up and he walks in strong strides towards the seat to my left. He drops himself onto the seat with a pencil in hand and nothing else.
