Kicked Out

Sun Mei had said it. She couldn't take it back now.

"You quit?" Mrs. Lin asked incredulously before her eyes flashed with anger. "You ungrateful piece of trash! This is breach of contract! I can sue you!"

Sun Mei felt her temper flare up. This was completely unfair!

"You have been violating the contract since day one! I'm so tired I can barely stand anymore!"

"You're just lazy!" Mrs. Lin snapped back. Then, she grabbed Sun Mei's arm. "Wait till I tell Mr. Lin about this!"

"Mrs. Lin, don't shout. The boys are sleeping…" Sun Mei said as she tried to pull away.

"Don't pretend to care about my sons! You are abandoning them out of the blue without a care in the world!"

"I am not! I will stay until you find another nanny. I gave you two weeks notice…"

Mrs. Lin snorted and let go of Sun Mei's arm. "You will not be staying under my roof for two more weeks. You will not even be staying the night. Get out!"

"What?" Sun Mei stepped back in surprise.

"Get out right now!" Mrs. Lin yelled before turning to point at the door.

"But…" Sun Mei stuttered. "It's the middle of the night."

Mrs. Lin rolled her eyes dramatically. "Do I look like I care?"

"I wanted to say goodbye to the boys…" Sun Mei whispered.

"You will never be speaking to my sons again," Mrs. Lin said with a glare. "Now get out of my house!"

"What about my belongings?" Sun Mei asked.

Mrs. Lin laughed. "You have got some nerve! Depending on my mood, I might donate them or burn them," she said with a sadistic smile.

Sun Mei held back her tears as Mrs. Lin pushed her out of the door.

"Please, Mrs. Lin… I need to make a phone call!"

"Good riddance!" These were Mrs. Lin's last words before she slammed the front door shut behind Sun Mei's back, leaving her alone on the street.

Sun Mei started sobbing uncontrollably. This was not what she had wanted. She had never expected that she would end up homeless in the middle of the night in a foreign country. Although Mr. Wu's card was in her pocket, she had no cell phone and no money on her. The neighborhood around her was dark and quiet. She wouldn't dare knock on a stranger's door so late at night to ask for help. She would probably be mistaken for a robber.

Sun Mei shivered in fear and disappointment.

Yu Zan lived too far away, and she didn't remember her phone number by heart. Her only hope was Mr. Wu. Su Mei took out his card and stared at it longingly. She had to find a phone and call the number on the card. She had no choice.

She immediately started walking towards the nearest restaurant. She prayed silently that it was still open.
