Mr. Wu Fights Back

"Please step back inside," the security guard told Sun Mei and Mr. Wu as the vulture-like shop assistants approached. "I need to search you both."

"We have not stolen anything," said Sun Mei anxiously. "Mr. Wu just paid for the jeans!"

The guard ignored her. The shop assistants were looking at her suspiciously as the security guard searched Mr. Wu. He naturally did not find anything.

"Your turn," he told Sun Mei, who looked utterly offended.

"Let's just get this over with," Mr. Wu whispered to her calmly.

Sun Mei nodded and allowed the security guard to search her. As insulted as she was, she still wanted to prove her innocence.

Unfortunately, when the guard went through her pockets, he pulled out a thin pink scarf. The shop assistants looked at her triumphantly as Sun Mei's mouth dropped open in shock.

"I did not take that!" she exclaimed.

"It was in your pocket, ma'am," said the security guard.

"She really did not take it." Mr. Wu rushed to her defense. "I was with her the whole time. She didn't even look at any scarves!"

"Apparently, she did," said one of the shop assistants sarcastically. "She has quite the eye. This scarf is worth 1,200 dollars."

"What? You guys are robbing people!" said Sun Mei before she could think about it.

"That's rich coming from a shoplifter!" yelled the shop assistant.

"I did not shoplift!" Sun Mei yelled back.

"Than how did the scarf end up in your pocket? Are you suggesting that someone else put it there?"

"Actually… Yes." Sun Mei turned slowly to look at Mr. Wu, who was obviously thinking exactly the same thing.

"I would like to have a look at your security cameras," he told the shop employees.

One of them, the one who looked slightly more hostile and uptight, replied coldly, "We do not have to show our security footage to anyone who does not work for the police."

Mr. Wu smiled coolly at her. "There was a woman here five minutes ago who hates Sun Mei yet uncharacteristically hugged her before she left. That woman had good reason to frame Sun Mei for shoplifting. If we go to the police, they will get the security footage. When they do and Sun Mei is proven innocent, I will drag the two of you and the store owner through the mud."

Sun Mei was impressed by Mr. Wu. Fifteen minutes ago, he had been too scared of the shop assistants to leave the store empty-handed, yet now he was threatening them and their employer in a sweet, innocent voice.

The shop assistant who seemed slightly less hostile stepped forward and said hurriedly, "Actually, since the scarf has been found, we could all just forget about this."

"No," Mr. Wu said. "I would like to see those security tapes. That woman tried to frame Sun Mei. I would like to press charges against her."

"Mrs. Lin is a good customer, sir. We would prefer that you do not press charges."

"Then we would like to return these jeans," Mr. Wu declared while bringing the shopping bag forward. "For a full refund."

Ten minutes later, he and Sun Mei walked out of the store empty-handed but happy.

"Good for you, sir. You stood up to those assistants. You faced your fear!"

Mr. Wu smiled timidly. "Thank you, Sun Mei. Now, where shall we go to get you some clothes? I think we won't be welcome here anymore."

"I know a place!"
