"What happened back there?" Sun Mei asked Michael as soon as they got in his car.
Michael shrugged. "Your boss just wanted to pull a tough act on me. I didn't say anything because his daughter was present."
Sun Mei frowned but fastened her seat belt.
This didn't sound like Mr. Wu, who was afraid of unfolded shirts and snobby shop assistants.
"Did you say something to him?" Sun Mei asked Michael.
"No. He just started acting like he's your father."
"He's too young to be my father," Sun Mei couldn't help saying. She felt kind of annoyed by Michael's comment.
"Do we have to talk about him during our entire date?" Michael asked pointedly.
"No."
Actually, Sun Mei did not say anything else during the entire car journey. When they reached the movie theater and parked outside, Michael turned to her and sighed.
"I'm sorry. I know that something I said must have bothered you. What was it?"
Sun Mei took a deep breath. "I just want you to get along with Mr. Wu. He is a very good boss. You have no idea how badly my previous boss treated me, but he offered me a job and saved me from that situation. If it hadn't been for him, you would never have met me. I didn't even have any time to sleep at my previous job, let alone go out."
"I had no idea," Michael said slowly. "I'll try to be nicer."
Sun Mei believed him. In an effort to lighten the mood, she said jokingly, "You should. Because if he fires me, I'll be sent back to China!"
Michael laughed. "That's a good enough motive for me!"
The two of them walked inside slowly and approached the concession counter.
"Would you like some…"
Before Michael could complete his sentence, Sun Mei yelled, "Popcorn!"
She immediately ran over to the counter without waiting for him.
"That's exactly what I was going to say!"
By the time he got there himself, Sun Mei was already munching on a piece of popcorn.
Michael looked at the bucket in her hand in surprise. "How did you get this so fast?"
"I stole it," Sun Mei said as she chewed.
Michael paled visibly.
"I'm joking!" Sune Mei reassured him. "But if I ever stole anything, it would definitely be popcorn."
"It's nice to know that I'm dating a selective thief."
"I'd like to be called an eccentric thief."
"Yes, my lady." Michael pretended to bow. "Can we get our tickets now, or did we just come here for the popcorn?"
"I know I did…"
"Hey, I'm hurt. I thought you came to see me…" Michael pouted comically.
"Don't make me choose between you and the popcorn!"
Thankfully, he did not. When they bought their tickets and started walking towards the theater, Sun Mei turned to him seriously.
"What is it?" he asked her worriedly.
Sun Mei lifted her popcorn bucket. "Do you think they do refills here?"
Michael sighed dramatically. "I feel like I'm tagging along to your date with this bucket."
