The Nail Polish Dilemma

"Calm down?" Mr. Wu looked completely taken aback by her nonchalant reaction. "I'm not being unreasonable. Nail polish contains toxic chemicals. I knew I shouldn't have left her with Jenny for so long without supervision!"

"Keep your voice down," Sun Mei reminded him. "Not all nail polish brands are toxic. Besides, she's not a toddler anymore. She is not going to put her fingers in her mouth."

Sun Mei quickly checked through the mirror to make sure that Lily was doing no such thing.

Then, she added, "I can go out and get nail polish remover right now if you want me to, but personally, I think you are overreacting."

Mr. Wu looked hurt by her words.

"Don't look at me like that, Mr. Wu. I know that Jenny is not a great parent, but sometimes it feels like you are looking for reasons to be mad at her. This is not a big deal," Sun Mei told him as delicately as she could.

Mr. Wu sighed. "Even if this nail polish isn't toxic, her school still does not allow kids to paint their nails. It's sort of frowned upon. The other parents will talk. You have no idea how hard people judge other parents, especially single parents."

"I do," Sun Mei reassured him. "And I'm sure Karen will be the first to notice and tell the principal. However, school doesn't start for another four days. Lily is really happy that she shared this moment with her mother and her nails remind her of that. Why don't you let her keep the nail polish until school starts? We can remove it easily the previous day."

Mr. Wu looked really conflicted. He was obviously used to getting upset over everything Jenny did, even if it was not that important or irreversible.

"Fine," he said eventually. "We'll do that." He hesitated a little before he added, "I'm not an unreasonable person. I just think that I lost my patience with Jenny long ago. I hate when she does things like that without giving me a heads-up."

Sun Mei nodded. "That's understandable."

As she was about to go into the bathroom again, she paused. "You know what would be fun?"

"What?"

"If you told Lily you are jealous of her nails and want her to paint yours too!"

"What?"

"You've never done this before with her, have you?"

"Definitely not."

"She would really love it and she wouldn't associate painting her nails with Jenny anymore."

Mr. Wu hesitated. "But… We don't have any nail polish in the house."

Sun Mei shrugged. "I'll go get some."

"And I have to go to work tomorrow morning."

"I'll grab some nail polish remover too."

Mr. Wu raised his hands in surrender. "How much money do you need?"

One hour later, after Lily was done with her bath and Sun Mei had come back home from the store, they all sat down on the floor of Lily's room and got to work.

When they were done, Mr. Wu realized that they should have covered the carpet with paper towels.
