Diana hearing the ongoing battle around the wagons knew she had to go help the others. What good was she as a mage if she couldn't handle this band of robbers.
Jeremiah sensing the intent of Diana cautioned her, " Diana even though you're a mage, please don't act so brazenly! You still have to think of the baby, surely her parents would scold you for trying to run into battle with a child!"
Diana scoffed at Jeremiah. " Surely you know I'm not that dumb, the only thing I will be bringing into this scuffle is this sword."
Diana being experienced in the use of her magic, was pleasantly surprised when she used it on the sword. The sword not only seemed to be imbued with holy powers but amplified any magic cast on it. What an excellent weapon. When she stabbed the robber she had been expecting him to feel the effects of the poison after a minute or two, but to her surprised he died almost immediately.
How lucky. She was afraid that if he could resist the poison for long enough he would still have the strength to fight. In the end it never came to that and she successfully saved Jeremiah.
As she reprimanded Jeremiah for thinking so little of her his ears became slightly tinged with red," No- I didn't it mean it that way, I'm just worried that if you brought her into the fight both of you might get hurt because you got distracted trying to protect her."
Diana's face visibly softened at his explanation. She began to nod in agreement with his assessment."Don't worry I will safely hide her away in one of the wagons, but first come here, let me heal you."
However, Jeremiah was still weak from his close encounter with the robber and had difficulty pushing himself away from the side of the wagon. His face became pale after trying to move. Diana seeing this walked over to him. "Silly man, don't you know when to ask for help properly? If I had known you couldn't move I wouldn't have asked."
Jeremiah chuckled, " What can I do, but to try my best in front of you. I would have given up long ago if it weren't for you, silly mage." Diana's cheeks began to heat up at this veiled confession. Wasn't this man too shameless, he dared to confess to her in the middle of battle. How bold of him, she really didn't mind it but she would never tell him that.
"Alright you moocher, lean against the wagon for a second while i prepare to heal you." Diana shook her in false contempt at his shamelessness, Jeremiah only grinned harder as he fell back against the wagon.
"Also, can you hold her for me Jeremiah? I need both my hands for this incantation."
Jeremiah's grin quickly faded. Him, hold a baby? He was just lonely bachelor, even though he was but 25 years old, and he had never held one before. He stuttered and tried to refuse, but quickly gave up seeing that he had no choice in the matter. Hold the baby or slowly bled to death.
Diana gave the baby to Jeremiah, instructing him to cradle her with both arms. The baby gleefully gurgled at Jeremiah's bewildered face, seemingly teasing him.
Dian looking as his face began to softly laugh, " Surely the big bad mercenary can't be afraid of holding a little baby?"
However Jeremiah didn't notice Diana's teasing, as he had become enraptured with the baby. She didn't seem to be afraid of him and openly smiled at him, even going as far as to reach her grubby hands up to pat his face.
Jeremiah gently covered her small hand with his own, completely covering it. 'She's so small and helpless', Jeremiah thought with a sad smile on his face.
The child however was unconcerned and quickly grabbed onto one of his fingers. Her strength surprised him and he was taken aback on how calm she was. 'Surely even the best behaved of babies would be crying at being dragged into the middle of a fight, what a strange baby.' Jeremiah shook his head and glanced up at Diana.
She had a strange expression on her face as she witnessed the tenderness that crossed Jeremiah's face as he held the baby. Even though he was a mercenary he would make a good father. As Jeremiah glanced up, she quickly smoothed out her face.
"Okay , now Jeremiah you gotta hold still okay, don't move or I'll wack you for wasting my magic."
Jeremiah rolled his eyes, "Don't worry this isn't the first time I've gotten hurt, I know what to do."
Diana however, seeing his eye roll, gently smacked him on the head. "Ow! What was that for you evil mage? Are you trying to injure me more, causing me to collapse and have an early death, you must be eager to do away with me because I've earned the little lady's love."
"Oh shut up, will you. Now stay still." Diana put the sword onto the make shift scabbard on her waist and began to mutter and held her hands over the wound on Jeremiah's arm. Suddenly she felt the sword at her side begin to subtly vibrate as she began her incantations. Surely this thing couldn't be that helpful, how overpowered could this sword be?
Her magic suddenly seemed to flow easier from her and she felt as is she didn't need to use up as much of her powers. Jeremiah's wound slowly began to knit itself back together, turning itself into a barely visible scar.
"Oh wow, if I was a woman I would pay you a hefty sum for making my skin look so flawless." Jeremiah laughed with joy and praised Diana for her skills at healing.
Diana shook her head, "Don't worry about it, you can repay me after we get to the capital."
Thankfully Jeremiah was not a complete hardheaded man, and saw that she wasn't completely brushing him off. This woman was really sly, never saying directly that she wanted him to tag along with her after the trip.
However this sentimental talk was cut short by the sounds of the battle. It seems his men still hadn't subdued the robbers. Jeremiah quickly handed the baby back to Diana, who in turned climbed back into their wagon. Creating a sort of nest out of the blankets, she tucked the baby into a corned and blocked the path of sigh to her with a few boxes. Leaving behind a make shift doll with her to hopefully keep her quiet , Diana kissed her cherub cheeks. "I'll be back soon, don't worry I'll make sure to give those unruly robbers a ruthless beating for interrupting our travels!"
Diana made her way to the entrance of the wagon, but accidentally stumbled. However strong hands suddenly wrapped around her waist as she almost fell from the wagon to the ground.
"Whoa... Can't have you out of the battle before you've even started." Jeremiah cheekily grinned at her as he pulled her into his chest.
"Let me go you ruffian, We've got to go chase off these robbers so don't get distracted!" Diana's face quickly flushed at their close proximity. She had never really gotten this close to a man before, let alone a man she found attractive.
"Don't worry I'm not distracted, but I'll let you go this one time." Jeremiah winked at her and set her down on the ground, quickly jumping back as he knew she had a tendency to hit people when she was flustered. And he was correct, Diana's hands which had moved to push him away suddenly meet with air.
Glaring at him, Diana harrumphed. Quickly taking out the sword, she glanced around and spotted a robber but a few yards away.
Jeremiah nodded to her and they set off to even the score.
