My contact in the Bahamas saw Agents Cloak and Dagger arrive just as he finished his task of pulling out my money.
He sat in his car in the parking area near the bank and saw both Agents appearing very unhappy with their find. Which to my relief was fruitless. I made some popcorn for myself for the occasion as I looked at the video feed of them walking out of the bank.
It didn't interest me the part where they walked out so much as the expressions they gave each other. If I didn't know any better, and I always do, I would've guessed Agent Cloak was pleased with Agent Dagger and he with her. Not as partners either.
BRRRIIIIING! BRRRRIIIIIING!
"Hello?" I ask into the phone.
"Hello, this is Prihi. The money has been transferred to Switzerland. Your money is safe." To affirm his statement, I login to the member website. Clear as day, it's there. All of it! "Are you still there, sir?"
"Yes, I am. Thank you, Prihi. Your family will be handsomely rewarded.
"Thank you, sir. I am forever and always your loyal subject." My hand involuntarily tightens around my phone.
"Good day, Prihi," I reply before hanging up on him. He's on probation. Prihi hasn't given me a reason not to trust him but he knows the Bahamas account now. Which means, he could potentially be a traitor easily.
I dial another number of one of my Rooks. Who reports to me if someone on probation is doing something they shouldn't. "Yes sir?"
"Hi Saul, I need somebody observed for six months. How do you like the Bahamas?"
"You know me. Cold weather has always been my friend." Saul is a rare bird indeed. His father was in the KGB and once the KGB got disbanded, Saul's father trained him in surveillance. He could tail the Commander in Chief around for a year and his own security detail wouldn't be none the wiser. "For you though, I guess I could walk on the beach. Who am I observing?"
"A local there by the name of Prihi. I needed to rely on him to make a speedy deposit in my Switzerland account. If you could observe the movements of him and his family?"
"Will do, let's hope I don't get sunburned," Saul replies. "Also, Sir..."
"Yes?" I ask him.
"This is the most we've spoken by phone so I didn't realize it before but you have a wonderful voice synthesizer." My heart stopped for a moment. "Don't worry, I won't tell anyone."
Unlike Prihi, I know Saul is a man who has never broken his word to me. He even got arrested and went to a Siberian prison for me so he has more than earned a sliver of trust.
"Good day, Saul," I say before hanging up on the call. I take a deep breath as I realize even a sliver of trust is hard to come by with me.
Maybe I should seek counseling? No, then I'd have to say how the trusting no one started. Nobody wants to hear that story and I for one wish I didn't live it. I unlock one of my drawers with a key only I own. In the drawer are photographs of a life well lived. I would've been content with my family now if they were all still breathing.
I could play with my children outside, kiss my true love again, and even walk into my parents home happily uninvited. Damn Arab spring ruined it all.
