Day 2

The next day, Kyle's face looked ashen and there were less flowers in his room. "Where did your flowers go?" I asked him.

Kyle shrugged as he said, "I told anybody that came into my room that they could take a flower pot. It's not like I'll be needing them where I'm going."

"Well, happy birthday," I said to him as I handed him a birthday card with a huge number one on it.

When he opened the card, there was a sticker with a cute newborn baby in a light blue bundle. Kyle then read aloud the words in the card. "You were born, eyes fresh to the world, ears hearing your parents voices for the first time, and nose overwhelmed with senses far and wide." He closed the card and gave me a bemused look. "I was one year old a while back though."

"I'm determined to celebrate the past birthdays you've enjoyed as well as your future birthdays. I'll be there for each one." Kyle shook his head.

"You're crazy, you know that?"

"Whatever. I'll see you tomorrow, Kyle."
