Day 51

"You know what, Renata?" asked Kyle as I made it into his room.

"What?" I asked him, trying not to show any alarm in my voice. He had a mischievous look that set me on edge.

Kyle shrugged as he plainly replied, "I think it's just going to be a great day is all."

As I moved closer to Kyle, I smiled. "I'm glad you say it's going to be a great day though. I think it's great that you're hopeful and positive since well, since the first time I met you, Kyle."

He grinned as he said, "I know, right?" I still made sure I stood at least two feet away from him and his maniacal smile. "I mean, you're the first person who's visited me today but even then, I feel like I'm loved by the world."

I was about to ask him what he meant by that when the nurse opened Kyle's room door and gave Kyle a smug smile. She was one of the nurses he didn't like so I didn't even bother to remember her name because I felt the same. She was just crabby and mean towards everyone, not just Kyle. "He's on morphine right now," said the nurse.

This time, I shared an equally smug look as I stared at Kyle. "Well, no wonder you're in a good mood, huh?"

"I'm ALWAYS in a good mood," he drawled out as I closed the distance between him and I, sitting in my usual spot. "Give me my present!"

I handed him his birthday card and he snatched it out of my hands and quickly opened it, not even bothering to look at the fifty-one in front of the card. He dramatically cleared his throat, before starting. "On your fifty-first birthday, Persephone brings her first boyfriend home. Where you promptly slay him with your trade house snark and interrogation techniques." Kyle let the card float on his lap as he giggled. "It's good to know I still managed to keep my snark."

As the door to Kyle's room closed and we were together alone, I took this opportunity to kiss him on the lips. Kyle looked at me, speechless. "Hmm, I guess your snark button is broken at the moment. It's too bad I only know how to kiss you, not fix you."

Even drugged up on morphine, Kyle got the message and gave me an answer back.
