To Lawrence, who has been there for me always.
THEBUS (ti-bəs)
You know the feeling when fresh air hits your face hard in the morning light or how the sun waves at you far off the distance, or how you can clearly see the two moons in the sky.
Well I felt that when I went up the stairs of my house/tower and looked out the balcony.
Bhritonce, the new world. Born here after transferring from the olden days. Living in the first village created with my friends.
I am Thebus Alazar, son of Margareth Alazar and Feodor Alazar, whom died years ago.
Well all of the parents here are dead, the one who raised us was Gaslon who took care of us as a big brother, we aren't siblings but we are a family.
"Oooiiii!" Kahilya shouted from the distance.
Kahilya was an old friend of mine, she was one of the few kids at Old Village. Well all of the kids are atleast 15 years old except Gaslon who was 18.
"Why?!"I shouted atop the balcony.
"We're waiting for you, its honoring day remember?" She smiled at me, her childish sweet smile that always help me stay connected to this world.
"I'll always come whenever you call me!" I shout at her.
Honoring day is the day we honor our parents, whom saved us and died themselves.
I look over to my friends from the balcony.
Lagorvo Adilla, our mechanic, he is pretty handy person and strong as well, he boxes with Gaslon from time to time.
Mahica Monte, A master of magic, well not really, she can cast a fire spell and small healing spell but that's it, that was all her Mother could teach her.
You might be wondering, how come there is magic in this world, truth is we don't know either, the locals also known as the Dwarven and the Elven told us that magic existed and that's it, gave us a few handy books and left, telling us to not bother them anymore.
Her mother was head sorcerer of Old Village, learning from whatever she can prosper, even creating her own spells, but she wasn't able to teach Mahica much.
Gaslon Veros, The strongest guy we have here, also a great hunter. He brought out a Daelus with his bare hands, (A Daelus is a kind of omnivorous deer.)
Koppa Uera, she is the one that weaves the clothes we have here, she is also a talented cook, not to mention her heavenly looks. She might even be considered an angel.
Adreks Ville, a proper warrior handy with a sword and skills with smithery. He creates Gaslon's hunting tools and other necessities.
Gheisha Alces, the smartest one out of all us, though it may not look like its saying much considered that there's only what....8 of us. She is very smart. She does most of the planning here on Old Village, I don't even think she's human.
Kahilya Ena, The youngest, even up until now she behaves in a child like manner, but when she becomes mature for even a slightest bit of a second, Run, she becomes really bossy and mean. Though another smart person, not really as good as Gheisha, though.
"Hey!" Adreks shouted from his pickup. "Are your feet glued at the top of your house, c'mon!" He shouted and I quickly ran down the stairs and opened my door.
A bright shiny day in fact, though my back seemed to itch and that's never a good sign.
I looked over and Gheisha was sitting alone by the rocks, staring at our walls.
Oh I forgot to mention, the pull of the moons to the waves are really strong, causing really large waves, if we wanted to survive we would have to build walls, that's how our parent's died, the wall gave out and blasted a bigger wave than we've ever seen before and killed all of them. Gaslon and Lagorvo took the time to build even bigger walls.
Now its 5 times larger than me.
I didn't realize I was staring at Gheisha and I saw her staring back at me smiling.
I waved at her.
She waved at me.
Kahilya came out of nowhere again. "Hey! Let's go."
"W-wait." I tried to argue but she was already dragging me along, for such a small girl, she was pretty strong.
Gaslon was sweaty as he was putting the firewood in the center of 4 logs placed to look like a circle.
"Oh, Thebus." Gaslon gently said, "Would you mind getting and telling Lagorvo to help me."
"Not a problem." I nodded and Kahilya let go of my hand.
"I am gonna help Koppa with the cooking.." She smiled again.
"Dear God no."
"Dear God yes."
And she ran off again, I wouldn't necessarily call her bad at cooking, but yeah she is bad at cooking. Definitely.
Mahica was watering our plants while also trying to grow another plant behind her with magic, pretending to not care, though I can see she is more enveloped in raising plants with magic.
"Not looking at it won't make it grow." Adreks spoke behind her.
Mahica gave a slight shriek and dropped the watering can. She looked at Adreks her ears were pink, both with embarrassment and probably anger. "Shut up, idiot." She said.
"Look who's talking." He smirked. Mahica threw dirt at his facing some landed on his mouth. Then Mahica aimed the water can at his face.
Those two seriously have a thing going on.
I spotted Lagorvo, fixing Adrek's car.
"Broke down?" I asked.
"Yeah." Lagorvo answered underneath the car without a hint of surprise in his voice. "Something went wrong with the engine coils and gas was leaking a tiny bit." He went out and stood up. "What's up?"
I guided him to where Gaslon is and told him he needed to cut some trees to make firewood, he grabbed an axe and headed off.
Nothing else to do, I walked over to Gheisha and sat next to her.
"Hey." She spoke almost a whisper. She is a very shy person.
"What are you doing there?" I asked looking at the books she's reading and the others piled next to her.
"Something." She smiled and looked back at her work.
"What something?" I asked but she didn't answer anymore. She just wrote down on the book.
"Here." She showed me a sketch and I almost fell over my seat, it was a sketch of me and Lagorvo laughing together, and it was so goddamn realistic.
"Wow." I spoke.
She smiled to herself. Then she stretched herself up and stood up. "What do you say we go for a walk." She said not even looking back at me.
"Sure."
We walked across the wall since we don't want to get close to the beach and die.
"You know I never really feel connected to you guys, yeah you treat me like a sister but sometimes I feel ignored, you know what I mean." She kept on walking gripping the book in front of her skirt. I saw her hand tighten the grip on the book. "I just feel like I don't belong and I want to change that, I want to be more fun and outgoing but i just can't seem to do it. I feel scared that one day, one day like any other, a wave will come and ruin our happy lives. I hate it, I hate thinking about it, but these past days don't feel right. The library was destroyed and all of the books that are left is what I have in my house, I want to know more, to protect you guys more, to help you more, to do more, because I feel like I am not doing anything. I don't know why I am telling you this but just want to get it out, I just want to feel calmer. " She stopped herself for a tiny bit, tears were forming in her eyes. "I want to be able to save you guys, because you saved me when I was stupid enough to almost die because of that, yo-your mom would have still been here, if she didn't sacrificed herself to save me, I wouldn't be here, I know you keep saying it's not my fault but I feel like it is. I just want to do something." She looked at me, tears were streaming down her eyes. "Anything."
And then she broke down crying.
~~~~~~~~
We arrived back and it was already dawn. It was starting to get dark.
The others were already there.
The image of Gheisha's face crying is stuck in my head, aching my heart, feeling like it's my fault that I made her cry.
I tended for a bit but I relaxed after a while.
Gaslon brought with him a guitar and gave it to Adreks.
Gheisha's face left no mark of her crying, as if that scenario never happened, she caught my eye and I looked away.
Adreks started playing blissfully, it was such a beautiful tune, a brand new song perhaps, then out of nowhere Mahica started singing, her voice echoed across our head surprising us, her voice, her voice, was beautiful.
Adreks look at Mahica and smiled, he started singing along. Mahica was smiling as well as she sang, I could tell they planned this. Their voices fit together like a puzzle, they combined in harmony, it's as if you were listening to a choir of kids.
Then the music was interrupted by a loud rumble.
Lagorvo caught Gheisha when she almost fell over. Wrapping his arms around her, she didn't seen to mind, she even smiled a bit.
Though everyone was worried. A rumble, a big rumble tremored across the sandy ground.
Gheisha stood up. "THE WALL NOW!"
Gaslon and Lagorvo ran to the wall. Mahica, Koppa and Adreks started loading things in the pickup.
Kahilya started talking to Gheisha asking her what the hell happened. Gheisha looked at me and nodded, telling me to go to the wall and check.
"I knew there was something wrong, the moon looks bigger." I heard that a faint sentence from Kahilya before I ran after Lagorvo and Gaslon.
I arrive behind them, Lagorvo at the top of the wall. His body shivering in fear, his voice creaky.
"I-it's a big one." He said.
