He was a bodyguard.

His every action was meant to protect the target and eliminate the threat surrounding it. He was paid to do so, which meant his every word was fabricated, where his truths were lies and his lies were the truth.

It sounds complicated, but it usually depends on the context.

In this case, Ryder was paid to keep watch over me, to make sure I behaved and kept my end of the bargain.

Other than the few hiccups in the beginning, I'd say I did a pretty good job of making his work easier. In a way, he should be thanking me. If I hadn't reined in my mischievous behavior, he wouldn't be enjoying this peace or even getting the big bucks.

"You don't need to prove anything because you already owe me a favor."

"A favor? Since when did I owe you a favor? This is the first time we're talking to each other."

"I'm sure you've read my files, so you know I'm far more capable than those petty pranks I pulled before. I wonder what would happen if I turned it up a notch?"

"You wouldn't!"

"Oh, I might, so it's in your best interest to just tell me the truth."

"....okay fine."

I win! 😏

"Felix is my nephew. He really isn't one of the guards assigned to you."

"Your nephew? You look quite young to be an uncle."

"He's my eldest sister's youngest son. I'm just a few years older than him."

"I see. So why were you hesitant to tell me the truth?"

"Because if you knew about my relationship with him, then you could easily use him to threaten me."

The 'kid' was already my hostage before meeting Ryder. So I'm guessing during the time I met him, Ryder wasn't around.

I wasn't thinking about it previously, but he did give me a good idea, just in case I wanted him to do something for me. 😏

"Don't even think about it!"

Oh, busted.

"Whatever. I won't use your nephew to blackmail you."

"You won't?"

He didn't sound like he believed me. Well, nobody did.

"Why would I use him when I can just resort to torturing you in other ways? Won't the suspense keep you on your toes?"

"So you're still planning on doing something, aren't you?"

"It depends on you."

"Me?"

"Yes, whether you're planning to report the events of today to your master. Even if you do, I still have other ways to make your life—or even your nephew's—miserable, so you better make your decision carefully."

Ryder's eyes narrowed as he considered my words. "Fine, I won't report this. But you better keep your word."

I smirked, twirling the butter knife in my hand. "Don't worry, I always keep my word. Just remember, Ryder, this is a game of trust and survival. Play it well, and we might just get along."

"Trust and survival, huh? Fine. But don't push your luck too far."

"Wouldn't dream of it," I replied, the hint of a challenge in my voice. 😏
