The boys were of similar height and weight, and both ate and had the same environment, but the one named Shuǐ Tian was a natural-born swordsman and made the elder jealous of the boy's talent.
But when the Elder tried to recruit him, he said he wouldn't leave, unless his best friend went with him. So the Elder brought both of them to the Waterfall Sect. They both received the same Sword Scripture Technique, due to Shuǐ Tian's talent and skills but it took Pù Bù 3 years to reach the 2nd form of the sword technique whereas, in the same time span, Shuǐ Tian reached the 6th form in those 3 years.
Basically the higher the talent, the fast you could learn a sword technique, but if you don't have a high comprehension it will take you a long time to master it.
Shuǐ Tian was considered a Genius Swordsman Talent in the last generation While Pù Bù was only considered a Great Swordsman. But to be honest, there is a happy and sad ending to this story.
Pù Bù might have had a great Sword talent and was not as good as compared to his best friend Shuǐ Tian. He had a higher talent for Cultivating though, it took him only a couple of times to memorize and understand cultivation techniques, and made up for his Sword talent, but Shuǐ Tian ended up getting into a sword accident, he was cheated against by a rival of his 400 years ago and his Spirit Root was damaged and now Pù Bù has surpassed him in cultivation and on the path of the Sword.
