Jenny walked out of the bathroom donned in a thick pink bathrobe and a towel wrapped on top of her head.
"I won't kill myself, mother," Jenny said a-matter-of-factly.
"Omo! Who said I was thinking of such things. This girl," Auntie Lala fervently denied in her shaky voice. It was pretty obvious that she was worried sick the entire time Jenny was in the bathroom.
Jenny sat on a tufted round ottoman in her walk-in closet and started to slather lotion all over her skin. She sighed at her two-tones darker skin bedecked with sunburn freckles from swimming at high noon for almost an hour.
Chaste walked in with a tray full of refreshments. Jenny eyed her then went on to blow dry her hair.
"I prefer to be alone while I get dressed. Thank you," Jenny held the door after she's done with her hair and motioned for the rest to leave.
"You have guests waiting in the tea room, sweetie," she reminded her daughter. Auntie Lala rubbed her hands against Jenny's before she stepped out of her daughter's room.
Jenny walked parallel to the shelves of her walk-in closet, her fingertips lightly touched each clothes as she woke them up from their static slumber and waited for the clothes to call out her name and speak to her.
She halted her steps and grabbed a white sleeveless dress, 'You are perfect,' she complimented the dress… and her taste too. It was downright perfect for her because even the slightest of touch felt like a million needle pricks on her poor burned arms.
Jenny stood before a full-body mirror and examined herself. 'You are a pirate. We will see each other on the coast,' she repeatedly said her new mantra. She took the pirate's necklace hanging on the mirror and wore it before sauntering out of her bedroom.
She walked around the mansion in fairy-like steps and found her way to the tea room where a guest was patiently waiting for her.
"Grandma!" she squealed in delight upon seeing the Co Matriarch, her footsteps now hurried yet still with grace. She gave the old woman a big bear hug and burrowed her face into the old woman's warm embrace.
The Huang sisters never had the chance to grow up with their grandparents because life has its way of keeping everything in balance but they were still lucky enough to be pampered by the Co and Sai Matriarchs as if they were their granddaughters.
"My sweet child!" Grandma Co stroked the sunny girl's hair. Every morning since the accident, she would welcome herself to the Huang Household and would wait for Jenny to come out from her hibernation but each time she would leave and go home heartbroken.
It has been days since the accident and yet there was still no update on the main cause of the explosion. Grandma Co eyed his grandson who stood quietly in a corner, his attention flying elsewhere.
Grandma Co pushed the sunny girl away from their embrace and pointed a finger at a corner. Jenny's eyes smiled, she pecked her grandma on her ageless, flawless cheeks and whispered to her ears, "Thanks for my gift, Ah-ma."
She walked on tippy toes and wrapped the man in a hug from behind, "Thinking about me?"
Lucas turned around and reciprocated her koala hug, he kissed her head and replied, "Always."
"Now say… I love you too, Jenny Huang," she cheekily demanded, her light brown almond-shaped eyes gleamed like stars. She was the broken one yet her eyes shone brighter compared to his lifeless and unreadable eyes.
A gummy smile instantly cast on his face but before Lucas could open his mouth, Auntie Lala cleared her throat and reprimanded her sweetie.
"Omo what an impertinent child! Is that how we raised you?" The purple veins on Auntie Lala's neck were visible, it looked like climbing vines on her jade-like skin.
Jenny eyed her mother then darted her sight to the beautiful lady who stood beside her. The mere presence of Chaste annoyed her. Of course, she saw how Chaste blushed around Lucas. She also saw how her mother secretly crafted a devious plan to ship the two together.
"I don't like you." Jenny's sudden display of dominance and hostility made Chaste step back a little. She had never experienced such enmity in her years as a private jet cabin crew… not even in her entire life.
She fought hard to keep both her tears and professionalism in check. She bit her bottom lip as she bowed in a 45-degree angle and said, "I am sorry to disappoint the third young miss."
"You can leave us, Chaste," Auntie Lala said, her tone was taut - vexed at her daughter's attitude.
Grandma Co was all smiles at Jenny - proud at her granddaughter's remarkable feat. She loved how easily the sunny girl saw through her mother's cunning mind. Finally, somebody could put up a fight with the imperious Yiu Lala.
