It was damp and wet, and Kayla could help shivering as she ran across the forest. She was cold, tired and scared out of her mind but she still ran with determination. The sound of wolves could still be heard, indicating that they were still very hot on their tail.
She still remembered that scene clearly. The stupendously huge monster had raised its paw ready to strike, and them Boom, with a thunder, it was down. It took her a moment to get overt he fact that she had just faced certain death. The monster wolf's grin was still very vivid.
Right now, she was moving on auto pilot. It took everything within her not to falter, not to go down. Just as she was jumping over a fallen branch, she realized her foot didn't go high enough. She didn't even have the strength to move her hands fast enough to protect her face, and she fell face first.
Kayla was the waitress from the inn, the woman who had first mentioned the quest of keeling. She had just been about to get torn apart when Kedan finally put his opponent down. Shooting a look at the inn, he realized that he didn't have time to run up, pick up the bow and start shooting. It was do or die, either act now or continue to conceal his power.
Kedan knew Dane's heart, and he wouldn't abandon mortals if he could. Plus, what was the use of having all this power if one doesn't get to use them.
Using telekinesis, Kedan picked up the various arrows that were scattered all over and the ones in the quiver as well. Of the 20, 3 were completely damaged, but to his luck, 17 arrows were just enough to deal with the enemies.
Picking his target, Kedan locked on each arrow to the enemies forehead, and then released his power. The arrows had shot out so fast that they had caused sonic booms as they went, the booms that Kayla and the others heard.
Gaining a moment of respite, the humans had shot up at once, running off to the tunnels. Kedan and the old man had led the way, eliminating whatever threat was before them. As they finally made it into the tunnels, Kedan took command.
He grouped the sailors that could fight and some of the residents that volunteered at the front and the rear, and then the civilians that had also been at the bar were placed in the middle. The reason they were fleeing was because these wolves were only released for one thing, to utterly destroy. They never left anyone alive. They were the first and most devastating line of offense, and any sign of trouble from the human side, they were the first on scene.
The wolf kin did not want to waste any of their lives trying to maintain peace among the humans, after all, they were a conquered species. What they did do was release these monsters whenever humans caused any trouble. The message was simple, either fall in line, or fall for the jaws.
They were a completely undefeated foe that no one wanted to encounter. Everyone was on high alert, and they didn't want to encounter these monsters. All except one.
This one was actually having a time of his life. It wasn't very often that a Faction Protector got to use his main and most beloved ability, and the last time Kedan had was several centuries ago. Now that he could use it, he was like a fish in the water. His only regret was that he couldn't release all of it, rather, there just was no opportunity to showcase all of him.
For someone who could deflect missiles and long range cannon blasts in galactic battles, deflecting and obstructing some arrows could not even be described as child's play. Kedan found himself even wishing for more challenging situations. He would have turned back too, but he had a bunch of mortals who were scared out of their wits and in no condition to fight. They were barely holding on as they ran.
As they made their way across the tunnels, there were several attacks by the wolves and much later, the wolf kin guards. No matter how much these guards tried to stop them, there wasn't even a single casualty by the time they were out of the city states.
Once here, Kedan saw no need to keep running with the others, so, he made them go forward and he was left holding up the rear. Truthfully, he was having such a good time just sniping from so far.
Finally, they were gone. Kedan even breathed a sigh of relief. He then connected with the gravitational pull in the area around him. Concentrating all his power, he started mapping out where every living organism was. This was a cheat kind of ability. However, it was an Active skill.
The difference between Active and Passive Skills and Spells was that the Active skills had to be done intentionally, while the Passive skills did not require any activation as they were on throughout. Active
Remember Kedan's power revolved around the law of attraction, and the Gravity was stack in the middle of it. Using the gravitational pull, he was able to identify where each of the enemies were, what weapons they were carrying and how many they were. In a planet with high Mana concentration, Kedan could even scan the entire planet as a Grade C, but in this planet, he could just extend his reach to the continent.
He didn't need to extend his reach to the continent though, so he only set up a perimeter around the entire city state. With that he could see all those coming in and out, and given that they were all under the effects of Gravity, he could even map out the 3D version of it. Such was the power of this heavenly skill, which he fondly called Gravitational sense.
Now that he had all his prey within his sights, lets the games begin.
From his vantage point, Gnome saw the girl fall. The damn humans that were nothing more than an irritation and an eye sore to him were causing trouble again. At first, as was the usual, the Harrow's administration had sent the wolves on them, but somehow, these humans had managed to annihilate an entire wolf pack. That was no mean feat.
These were not just your every day wolves. They were specially created monsters by the Wolf God. This meant that they were sacred beasts. Sacred beasts should not be considered the same as Divine beasts, or monsters.
Monsters, by simple definition, were beasts that had awakened an ability. By this definition, Bamboo and other lavels on that pitch were monsters, and so was Dane. However, the difference came in where monsters were just beasts, while Divine beasts were those monsters with sentience, such as Dane the Dragon, Bamboo the lavel and many others.
This third category was the worst kind. They were fully submitted to a god or power. This is why they were called the sacred beasts. They were born with the abilities. They were among the very rare kind of that were guaranteed to awaken an ability. While these seemed so well positioned, there were obvious drawbacks.
For one, they only could awaken the ability within their bloodline, as was dictated by their god or power they are submitted to. Secondly, their power and output was limited to the power of their god since they drew power from them. As such, they could have amazing bloodlines but a trashy power source, or the reverse.
Gnome didn't know all that, but Kedan knew. What he didn't was, who was this wolf god, and why would Dane choose to leave behind such an important quest in a region under the control of some power? Given the nature of its secrecy, importance and the ramifications that would come by if they were discovered, Kedan honestly found it to be too big of a risk. Whatever the case, his big brother must have had a reason for this choice.
What Gnome did know was that as soon as they heard that the wolves had been put down alongside several other guards, he had been called to lead the reinforcements.
As a wolf kin who had awakened an ability, he was among the most feared and respected in the city state. He was a member of the war council, a noble at that, how could he not be irked that some humans were causing enough trouble that he had been sent to deal with them. His only consolation was that these humans were easy to deal with. They might have dealt with the wolves, but now, the administration was getting serious.
As he was thinking these thoughts, he had an arrow already on his bow. Similarly, he'd already led his team of wolves to intercept the fleeing humans in a pincer attack. All in all, this was turning out to be a good hunt, he thought. Gleefully, he decided to dispatch the fallen human female first, before raining terror on the rest.
How could he know that at that time, he had just entered the sights of a dangerous predator. The kind he should never offend. This was not a battlefield, but a hunt, and while he may have gotten that part, he was confused on who was the prey.
As the string let go off the arrow, the little wooden weapon flew at top speed ready to do what it was built to do, end a life. At that moment Gnome's eyes were not on the arrow, but on the fallen prey. As his payload hurtled towards her, he looked on, happy to actually get rid of this vermin.
At the corner of his eyes though, he saw something unreal. The arrow actually stopped mid air when it was inches away from her. What was even more incredulous was that it actually turned, and before he could react, it was sticking in his neck. As his vision darkened, he didn't even understand he how he'd died.
Unknown to him, the same scene replicated itself all over the battlefield, and each of the wolves and wolf kin guards dispatched died at the same moment. Kedan took his time to inspect the battlefield with his Gravitational Sense, just to make sure that all enemies were taken care of. He then got off his perch and walked to where Kayla had fallen.
"What are you?" She asked him, scared out of her mind. She had seen the arrow. Unlike Gnome who was not concerned by its movement, she'd seen as it came at her, and she was powerless to move. Next, she saw it stop and turn. That sight had been so stunning that she never imagined a member of her species would actually do something like that.
Looking at her, Kedan actually got the first good look at her features. Though she had quite the forehead, she was extremely beautiful, almost as though the forehead was adding to the beauty. It was quite comical though cause she had big bump right on the forehead where she had fallen, causing Kedan stifled a laugh.
"I am just a guy," Kedan said as he extended his had to help her. He had a warm smile to put her at ease. Once she was up, his eyes never left hers, but the warmth did. Just as she was thinking that this day couldn't get any more crazier, he said.
"The real question is, what are you?"
