My Body Is A Furnace

Natasha was (perpetually) hungry, so they went to the cafeteria and discussed while they ate. Years of training and diet had honed her body into such shape that even the unhealthiest of foods were easily spun into musculature. Iris herself was a few inches taller than her mentor, but even she was still about 30lbs lighter.

"So, the non-host's house." said Natasha. "Are we sure that's him and he didn't change seats in the car?"

"Doubt we can verify that now, given I'd need to Timeline again to check. …still, I've got the idea that he truly was important. I just can't imagine otherwise why they would let a non-host go along on host deals."

"But if he was important, he would have been given a Revenant."

"There's no test to check if he's a carrier, is there? That he can host a Revenant, but wasn't born with one?"

"Hirogane might have something if you bring the heart in. You could even donate them, like that kindly old man on the news lately who donated an entire bag of kidneys to a hospital."

Iris snickered. "Still, he can't pretend to have a Revenant or lie about having one. He's obviously important in some aspect, or the house is, at least. Starting to think it could be an old house of Salvatore's."

"If we were able to Timeline in there, we could figure out what. But I doubt we can get left alone for an hour."

"Right. Seems the most important piece of this is the non-host. What we've picked up is that the young man and the host were friends. I doubt they liked going anywhere without each other. The host was almost like his chaperone. Given their wounds are similar, I imagine they were both killed by the same Revenant."

"You think that's why they're guarding the place, then? It's not that there's something there: it's that it might lead us to where he died." said Natasha. "Plus, if it's Salvatore's old home, why isn't it for sale? Why just abandon it?"

"I'm not sure. …wish we could go back, but... Who are those two students in Kate's squadron? Aren't they there to help us on difficult contracts?"

"We're not talking to Naomi." Natasha nervously rubbed her neck. "Nope."

"Alright. I'm just not sure..." Iris frowned. "There's another plan, but far riskier. I need to accelerate the car. Move it from -45 to 0, so to speak. But he'll have gone home plenty of times and parked his car there for hours; I can speed that up, but I can't prevent it from happening."

"How long would that take?"

"If it's about to drive into civilians, I can stop their vehicle and erode a hole into the road so they'll fall into it. They'll be pissed, but safe. But my guess is that it would still take an hour or more." Iris frowned. "My hope was there was a different method, perhaps, but I'm starting to doubt there is. We have to fight them."

Natasha considered it for awhile. "I can bait them. Meteorology's wind can pull me out and let me keep dodging. You've seen my cardio."

"I'm worried if they find me solo and he kept his car parked at home for much longer than I expect. Or if he was killed somewhere other than home…" Iris shook her head. "I suppose I'll trust your lungs."
