Ceneth's eyes were unfocused for a bit as if he was lost in thought. Only a moment later did he say, "If we were to drain all her blood, then we would have enough for trail samples but not a definite cure. We would be taking a risk with this. As Kayda's blood is fundamentally different then anything I've worked with before, it will take many trials and error to be able to find the right solution that Miss Mellisony can take without any drawbacks."
As he was speaking, the air around Dimitri became increasingly thick as it weighed down the atmosphere around them.
"So, in my opinion, the best solution would be to keep Miss Kayda alive. It would provide us an unlimited amount of blood needed to find the possible antidote for the young Miss. Only, it would take a bit longer."
The room returned to its silence. Not a single word was spoken into the air to disrupt Dimitri's thoughts as he remained in deep thought until his cold gaze turned forward to look at both butler Stevens and Ceneth.
"Butler Stevens, call for Dr. Myer. Have them check on Kayda."
Turning his head, his wintry eyes layed intensely upon Ceneth. Each of his words carried an unbearable weight to emphasize each vowel more deeply than the last.
"Ceneth. Continue to work on her blood. This is your top priority. Nothing else matters."
Ceneth and butler Stevens both lowered themselves in respect. Their heads bowed and their hands over their chest as they spoke in unison.
"Yes, my lord."
...
Kayda felt confined to the room. It no longer felt like a luxurious abode but a fancifully decorated cell.
She was given three meals a day, often being called to dine with Mellisony, but other than those repetitive ventures, she was restricted to these well decorated four walls. The same faces and same routines.
Three days, it hadn't been long. But the trepidation that welled up in her slowly made feel as if the days stretch into months. Only three days felt like a year.
So used to having her hours filled with tasks needed to survive daily, it contrasted so greatly with her long and featureless days spent in a soulless comfort that she felt she would suffer from whiplash.
Dully sitting by, she looked out the windows, that at some point had been locked shut.
The birds flickered around, carried on wings twice the size of their small little bodies.
She watched as one hopped along a branch near the window, its eyes trained on a small grasshopper that had wedged itself in the grooves of the flaking bark.
A knock suddenly interrupted her silence, shaking her slightly from her daydreaming.
The bird flew off with the large grasshopper grasped between its small black beak.
Without turning her head, she waited quietly as she listened to the door open. Maggy's voice greeting the silence.
"Miss Kayda, you have a guest."
A set of unfamiliar footsteps entered the room then, followed by Maggy's. She kept her eyes trained forward, gazing through the transparent glass in front of her.
"Miss Kayda. I am Dr. Myer. I was sent here to give you an examination."
Kayda finally turned her head, where her eyes met a grey and pressing gaze.
The person standing before her was tailored in a fine suit that fitted a well proportioned and thin stature. With ash grey hair cropped at a short length, they looked to be in their mid forties.
It wasn't until this person spoke that she realized that it was a woman.
Dr. Myer stood there as her gaze examined every part of Kayda's body as if it was probing around her physical aptitude as she stood there while Kayda was silent.
"Please, sit." Kayda said as she looked back out the window, intending to ignore their existence.
"Thank you. Madam Maggy, if you please, I would like to speak to miss Kayda alone." Her voice was eloquent as she spoke, turning to Maggy with a glance.
Maggy came forward and set down a large leather bag before she took a few steps back with a warm smile. "Of course. Call for me if you need anything." She left, leaving Kayda with a warm and reassuring glance.
"Miss Kayda," Dr. Myer turned to Kayda, placing her gloved hands upon her lap. "I would like to assess your physical well being. I'll try to stay within my bounds to maintain your comfort."
Her diplomatic voice carried no arrogance or command that ordered her to follow out her own sequence of motions. It was just a simple and polite proposal.
Turning her head slightly, she no longer looked at Dr. Myer dismissively. She probed at her eyes. At her body language and expression.
Why was it that these people were so strangely bazaar? It was confusing! This person before her was professional and carried herself with obvious pride. If she was sent here to just check her health, she could just affix it to them needing her blood.
But they didn't need to be so polite. Why were they so polite? She was just a blood bag. An expendable resource. So why?
She felt dizzy from all these thoughts running amuc in her head. She just wanted to rest in peace if she was going to be left inside this room. She didn't need them to care about her well-being.
It made their movements all that harder to grasp. Harder for her to understand and defend against.
Standing up, she went over silently with a heavy air hanging around her head. For the first time, she sat down on one of the couches in the room across from Dr. Myer. Maintaining eye contact.
"Without the disguise if you will."
Kayda's hands turned pale at the force she used to clench her fists made her nails pierce her skin.
Won't do anything to make her uncomfortable? Ha, what a joke. She laughed, but the laugh was self-deprecating and hollow. As if following out a command, she rigidly removed the spell, barely containing the immense discomfort she felt at revealing herself so wantonly to an unknown variable after she had gained a way to hide this self of hers.
Dr. Myers' expression didn't change. She only stood to come closer to Kayda.
"If you feel any discomfort, tell me right away. I need to know."
Dr. Myers reached out for Kayda's hand slowly but before her hand could even come into contact with her pale skin, Kayda withdrew herself defensively out of instinct.
Dr. Myers' expression remained neutral. Only looking to Kayda for a second before slowly backing away and gesturing to the carpet that draped the floors.
"Would you feel more comfortable talking about this on the ground?" Her words instantly caught Kayda's mind. It didn't even take her five seconds before she nodded, got up and sat on the floor.
Sitting across from her was Dr. Myer, who instantly seemed out of place with her noble attire seated on the floor of a delicately decorated room.
She reached out her hand towards Kayda, but did not touch her and left it there. "Please keep in mind I will be wearing my gloves the entirety of my examination. If you need me to stop, I will. But I must warn you, this may be a bit uncomfortable or painful. When you're ready, take my hand and we'll begin."
Kayda's mind reeled at her words. She didn't sugar coat her words or butter her up with fanciful talk. Just bluntly told her what was going to happen.
She breathed. Taking in a breath, she reached out a frail hand and lightly placed it into Dr. Myer's. She could feel it's iciness through her gloves.
And they began.
At first, Dr. Myer only pressed lightly on her wrist to feel her pulse and feel her joints in each of her fingers as they were seated across from each other.
She redressed the torn nail and stripped skin on her other hand, telling her it would leave a scar without a single fluctuation in her voice. But Kayda could care less.
"The rest of the examination will need to take place on the bed. Could you please remove your clothes?"
Kayda instantly froze. She felt an immense storm surging inside of her making her heart rattle and shake. The agitation made her turn pale and as her eyes became unfocused.
Dr. Myer noticed her sudden change. Her eyes narrowed. "You don't have to take off everything. Just your outer garments."
Kayda deafly nodded. Numbly, she reached out to pull of her shirt. Her fingers feeling numb as she did so.
She then told her to lay down, which she obediently did.
It was only then that she started to feel pain.
Dr. Mayer examined her legs first, working and testing out overy one of her muscles and the nerves of her joints and reflexes. It wasn't until she made Kayda twist her ankle a certain way that she clenched her teeth. Pain had shot up throughout her entire leg.
